Thats not the agrument here is it I asked what does it DO better?
I've driven these and thought they were ****e, infact I have never been so disapointed in a car, ever. It certainly doesn't live up to its expectations.
Just because its a Porsche does not mean its a great car get that into your heads people. Other than the 924 and the 944 and the Cayenne I would say its the WORST car they have ever produced!
Davy our paths have crossed on here before with the same result, you kept writing cheap comments that have no substance to them.
You own one of the above mentioned Porsches to say the least so why the hell are you on a subaru forum other than to stir it up a little?

What better way to compare two different cars but on the same track by the same driver??
Autocar did a handling test a few years ago - Boxster S and P1 were included. The Boxster was quicker in the slalom and fractionally faster in the wet slalom, something you'd expect the P1 to walk.
Overall the Boxster won.
An STi will not pi55 all over a Boxster on track, it'll be very similar - probably swing the Porsches way if the tyres are the same. If you've been on track in a std STi and pi55ed all over the Boxster, the Boxster owner obviously couldn't drive.
You asked in what way was a Boxster superior.
Overall it's a much better compromise than an Impreza. Imprezas are very one dimensional What do they do well? They're cheap, fairly quick and grip well. That's it. Nothing else to recommend them. Build quality is not good, cost of ownership is not good, image is not good, quality of engineering is average. A good way to prove that would be to run a std sti and boxster s on track for a year and see which is more knackered at the end of it. That's assuming the Impreza is still running.
I used to think there was nothing better than Imprezas, but once you look past its one plus point, you quickly realsie there are better cars out there.
Given £30k, I'd take an M5 or Boxster over any Impreza - they will be better to own for 98% of the time.
PS - when you're cherry picking your laptimes in an STis favour, bear in mind how much extra time they gain with their special tyres - and also that they probably lap 2 secs faster on most tracks than std classics.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion of course, I'll bet in a few years time you'll have moved on and will be less blinkered.

Blinkered?
I HAVE driven both and not just gone on various reports and opinions.
The P1 is not an STI its a waterered down version with softer suspension and various other short comings.
As for cherry picking, the top gear website was the obvious choice as a quick comparison it was incedently the first and only website I looked at.
I'm not saying that imprezas are the best cars ever, they aren't. For example the evo FQ340 is better as it comes out of the factory than anything Subaru have produced. That statement is also based on plenty of hours driving one.
What I am saying and am doing so for a final time is that in my opinion based on my own experiences (having DRIVEN both cars not reading about them) Is that the STI is a more capable car plain and simple. Forget looks and build quality we've never been talking about that here although some people have brought that into the argument to try and tip the balance in the boxster's favour when refering to the original posters question.

Colleague of mine justed traded his boxster in for an RX-8 in grey (nice), I got round to asking why, he said he'd always wanted a Boxster ,but the reality was a big let down, crap power, numb brakes, etc. (was 2nd hand to be fair, from JCT600). Eventually admitted that I'd left him for dead one morning on the run to work. I didn't know he was there (!) and he's still upset 'cos his new car won't keep up either...... I would still look as big a prat in a Porsch"a" as I do in a Scoob...

To say a Boxster is slow with numb brakes is talking sh*t i'm afraid.
ok it wont be able to keep with a modded Impreza we all know that - but ffs look at the threads original question.....How fast is a Boxster???
which has been answered numerous times.
2.5 - about the same as a newage WRX
3.2 - about the same as an STi
The new model with 295 bhp - even better.
Maybe not as fast in a straight line but handling etc.... but hey dont take my word or it read this autocar test....
Porsche Boxster (96-04) - Autocar.co.uk
and this is the lowley 2.5 that everyone says is really slow.
do you want me to dig out the test for the new 300bhp one???

You're wasting your time Chief - He'll dismiss your post as rubbish, yet cling to a random post with little substance like it's good enough to be used in a court of law!

Where are we going with this?
I've just proved a Boxster is over 1.5 secs quicker around a short track.
You found a time with the Subaru being faster, can we not agree that they have at least the same performance?

I've said all along that based on my own experience of driving the Boxster, Boxster S, Classic STI and a 2005 STI that the Boxster was a huge let down and was a slower car than either the Classic or new Age STI.
I respect your opinion and your entitled to it. I don't agree with it but that disagreement is only based on my own experiences.
They are very similar that I will concede but I honestly believe the Boxster is the inferior of the two.

its about drivers attitudes. A boxster driver will be happy to chill and enjoy the drive. a scoob driver will have blood pouring from his eye sockets going mad trying to force his "super car" past everyone. seen this all the time. Neds in cars going mad trying to find a place in this world through their cars !

Neds in cars going mad
What happened tonight is nothing special and I will probably see this 2 or 3 times a week.
To say only neds drive like that is crap. Yes there are a lot of boy racers who are tossers but the supposedly respectable business man is the worst of the lot and generally they are the type who will have a boxster with something to prove as a company car.
After all bmws and porsches are supposedly prestige brands and because they own them they obviously have immunity to laws and have to prove they are better drivers.
I've seen more drivers of "prestige" cars do dangerous manouvers because they have to prove they have a bigger ***** than me in my "Jap clutter". If they were so much better why would they feel the need to do this? It is the fact that they feel threatened by a car they know is as good as theirs but cost less. True high value performance car owners don't generally do this because they don't need to.

Back to comment, a silly exhaust, a blingy dump valve, and some uprated front brake pads don't make mine modded do they ????
DUNX
p.s. obviously going from a "new" Celica to a 2nd hand Boxster, says it all when 2 weeks later it's chopped in for a new RX-8.

Yep, says the guy is thick, and wouldn't know a good car if it bit him on the ****!
An RX-8 for heavens sake!
Thirsty, ugly (worse than a buy eye) and not even that fast.

Rather than 9 pages of waffle, here's the answer.
Boxster mk1 (2.7) 0-60 in 6.3s, 155mph
Boxster S mk1 (3.2) 0-60 in 5.5s, 164mph
Boxster mk2 (2.7) 0-60 in 6.1s, 160mph
New Boxster mk2 S (3.4) 0-60 in 5.4s, 169mph.
Hardly slow.
