speed has nothing to do with the car. handeling and good driving wins . I have stuffed chavs in wrx's in my Xantia diesel. why? because of better road craft skills and planning my route through the traffic rather than bashing through traffic causing mayhem.

Where is RoShamBo when you need him ? he went from classic STi to Boxster and I'm sure it was only on his drive for a short while before a 911 replaced it, he mentioned how slow the Boxster was compared to the Sti, the 911 pisses over everything though good choice that man !!

I went from a 270ish BHP 03 WRX to a 2.7 986 and IMHO they were about the same in terms of straight line go once rolling.

my MY97 Turbo [doing 240bhp] always seemed to be running out of breath from 120/130+mph.... don't think a Boxster would be the same tho???

ive never driven a boxster s but my mate had a normal boxter, which i drove and in terms of performance was poor (very poor), and he couldn't keep up with me in my old my clio 172. He wasn't that good behind the wheel though to be fair.

Poor man's Porsche but even the slowest given to a decent driver could embarass you. Fortunately they are usually driven by women or toff's who bought it just to say "I own a bloody Porsch"a" what what!"
There's probably 10x the amount of boxsters around here than there are scoobs. I'd say they come under the same bracket as an M3, bought really just for the keyring more than the car.

Why do we have to have all this 'I wasted a Boxster in my WRX/STI/Scooby' rubbish. It is pure garbage as anyone with half a brain can see just from the specs of the cars that there won't be much in it either way if the near maximum is extracted from both machines.

I have driven a 2003 STI and a Boxster S back to back and they are as near as damn it the same in terms of speed/aceleration up to normal speeds. The STI might deliver its power in a way that makes it feel faster, but when you look at the figures they are roughly the same.

The biggest variable in all these 'My car was much faster than his' threads is the driver. Do they have the skills, do they know the car as well as you know yours, were they even trying, did you have a fraction of a head start (which can make an immense difference) etc. etc.

And as for the poor man's Porsche thing - has anyone actually looked at a Scoob lately Oh and before you ask I own a Scoob, but am not living in dreamland about its performance or looks

Yes but a subaru isn't trying to be something it isn't. I bet most standard boxster owners bought them so they can say the have a porsch"a"(thanks 94!).

Its like people who buy beemer 316 compacts. Its an utterly crap car with a beemer badge on it.

I'm not saying the boxster is crap but compare a boxter to other soft top 2 seat sports cars and you find you are paying a LOT more just to get a badge.

No, but a lot of Scoob owneer have vastly over inflated opinions of their car's abilities. Sure it's a quick car and fantastic value for money, but it will not leave a Porsche Boxster for dead.

The badge engineering aspect of the Boxster is true to a certain extent, but Porsche in my opinion got the Boxster spot on, not so good it would take sales away from the 911, but still good enough to stand on its own abailities as a Porsche.

If you don't think they're any good then fair enough, but take one on a track and you will see where the money has gone. I own a 2003 STI and I woudln't fancy my chances against a well driven one especially round a track. Evens at best I suspect.

The orginal question was 'how fast are Porsche Boxters' I don't think the poster was asking for the 0-60 time.....

The best way to give people an idea of how 'fast' something is, is to provide a comparator to which they may be familiar with.

For example, if someone asked you how big an Impreza was would you say 'it's approximately 2m long by 1.2m wide or would you say 'it's about the size of an Astra...'

In summary, people's comments of my 1.2Nova can leave one for dead, though maybe innacurate are are in context with the original post.

Funny how there are loads of threads on hear about how slow boxters are, go on the porsche forums and most owners wont even care less what an STI is, PMSL

986, 911, 944, 997, 9** etc, one thing in common, they are all class, engineered for performance.

Porsche is by a country mile the best at understanding and manufacturing performance cars, bar none.

Ive seen so many of these nackered WRX'x with a road kill body work by Rippoff speed driven by neds all wanting to be gangsters listening to 100000000000000000000 watt made in pakistan Speakers, with the tinted windows rolled down so the girls that ming can see them. Ripping away from the traffic ligts etc . yet get them into traffic and they get all confused and the MCB's in their brains start to trip. They think its cool to blast from one point tpo another inand out causing mayhem. I did the North circ on a friday from Ikea to Southgate. I won easly. why. better control of my car and more thought about my route through the traffic. Also as I was "Stealth" (ie causing no offence to other drivers etc) I was getting past traffic easly. where as the wrx was pissing everyone off and people where doing there best to slow it down.

Ignoring driver ability and the relative image problems of both cars, and yes they both have image problems, it seems that the S is a similar match to an sti whereas the standard boxster is fairly underpowered.

to be honest, porsche have had a tradition for many years of producing fast, powerful sports cars, hence why some people think the boxster is say, underpowered for a porsche.

whereas, beofre the impreza, subaru did not have the same prestige history, so you cant really call a wrx underpowered, as it didnt really have any predecessers to match upto, unlike the porsche.

dont get me wrong, boxsters are a nice car, but to me when people mention a porsche i think of the legenary 911 series. when people menstion impreza, i usually think of a wrx or and sti to be honest.

My mate always says that a Boxster makes you look like a pilot for Budget Airline.

Now myself, I wouldnt mind being a pilot or having a Boxster (pref S).

Not particularly quick unless it's the newer 'S, but the chassis is sublime. The Impreza grips, the Boxster handles.

Some of those were pants though Dave. The VW-Porsche 914 sucked (the 914/6 was nice though). The 912 was massively underwhelming too, Ive only ever seen one that wasnt terrible (and Ive driven lots of them) and that had an original GS quad cam 1500 in it..... The 924 was underpowered but so much bollocks is talked about it by people who know next to nothing: the 924 Turbo redressed the balance, especially the Series II. The SII '24 Turbo was actually much quicker and far better to drive than the 944 that did for it, but that was a good quick drive (especially the original '82 cars), even if it didnt handle as well as the 924. That said; a mid-engined Boxster with a shade over 200bhp is quicker than any of the above cars, point-to-point: and that includes my old 968CS (and most 911s too)!
