Starlet GT Turbo, get one on a 1995 plate which may be a little older than the likes of the rest, but has Toyota reliability, and probably less miles than the rest of the cars in question too
1.3 Turbo, 6.9 to 60, good on fuel, insurance and tax
Getting more and more popular with the max power crowd though, wont be long before these are the new saxo/corsa, the chav's are getting onto the fact that they can have a WOOSH sound when they change gear, shame really as they're fun cars

I recently sourced a mint mk3 8v gti with 1 owner and 56k miles for a relative.
The car felt really solid although being 9 yrs old and was a good alrounder I thought.
Admittedly the performance was not fantastic but with 3 blokes in the car it felt quite torquey and drove at 80 no probs.
No doubt the 16v is a quicker car and I certainly wouldn't dismiss a mk3 golf because of some narrow minded individual comments.
Imo VW are a superior car to the Pug although around a track the Pug would no doubt take the prize, but it's down to what your requirements are.
I would have the 16v golf as the 306 gti looks even more overweight imo.

What is Torpids problem? a serious contender for the biggest pertentious **** on scoobynet. i think the term about as usefull as a perforated prophylactic springs to mind when reading his so called..advice.
anyway..howabout a clio williams 1. kudos with petrolheads..a benchmark of hot hatch standards back in the day and the only other car i know that looks good in a blue and gold colour scheme. they go well too!!
the only downside is the age of the car but i cant really think of many hot hatches that people still hold in such high regard.

My comments re: the MKIII golf are those of a true cognoscenti. It's the worst of all the Golf series, the used prices bear this contention out. Reliability is suspect, build likewise (wherever it was made although SA cars are worse) and it's a crap drive. To be honest a 98/99 Mondeo hatchback is a sportier drive.
I'd agree though that the Williams MKI, II or III are all great cars but as a day to day prospect are nowhere near a GTI-6. The Clio is a better pure hot hatch for sure but as a daily driver not as accomplished as a 306.

As far as I'm aware 'Volkswizard' is a respected dealer who sources premium stock and sells it at premium prices. He isn't supposed to be a rip off merchant. He does though seem to sell a lot of cars. Work it out for yourself.
You have a ****e, imagination free user name as well you backwards moron.

On the subject of golfs. Any of you guys ever owned a golf cabriolet ? 18.8 or 2.0 ?? Im looking at buying my girlfriend one but as she travels lot of miles, trying to find a sporty / conv / with good mpg and solid, is hard.
What is the mpg of a 1.8 / 2.0 golf ??

Yes he does.
Pretty sad really, but you can't have an excellent forum such as this, without those people who like to use it to make themselves feel 'all big'.
Pete is 100 times better than that useless torpid.

What are the 106/306 like for reliability?
And I wouldn't be seen dead in a saxo!
Have also heard some horror stories about the 172's!

The VTS/106 is the smaller car but you can get newer and lower mileage for the same money. If that convinces you then you can get more VTS than 106 because of their 'image'. I've seen 2002/3 plate VTS's, standard with sub 50,000 miles for circa £3,500. If its for driving pleasure you can't go far wrong - if you need creature comforts and more space then yeah you need the 306. You shouldn't poo-poo cars based on what you read on the internet and the fact that you see lots of them at McDonalds - judge it on its merits

FWIW I have an STI-5 and feel like a total chav everytime I drive it. But it ticks the boxes and is fast and that's all I care about. Trust me though I don't get the same sort of looks I got in the S2000.

What about a little VW polo GTI 16v, you can get a 1999/2001 for between 3 to 4k..They are good little runarounds, and go quite well on the motorways..
Plus they are pretty cheap to run and wont kill you on insurance..
I spotted a couple on the autotrader at about the £3500 mark

I've just bought a 6 coming from an EVO and Scooby just wanted to try something different to four wheel drive and modern hatches don't do much for me. So thought get a retro hot hatch so to speak and had always heard good things about the 6 and just bought one a few months back and love it too bits just as fast as a UK turbo but with better steering loads off fun just average build quality lets it down but loads off fun and get used to raggin the nuts off the engine 5k-7.5k the power band

I'd disagree.
Torpid may be somewhat acidic, but generally speaks the truth.
Pete, on the other hand, is a wind up merchant for wind ups sake. Thats worse in my opinion.
Anyway, he's right. Mark3 Golfs are ****e. The 8 valve ran about ten seconds to sixty, and the 16 valve was gutless.
Decent enough materials but not that well put together. Relaibility and longevity of parts seriously suspect.
Mark 4s have a perception of quality but again reliability and longevity of parts suspect.
If only everything in life was reliable as a volkswagen - pure hype, I'm afraid.
The last decent golf was the mark 2 16v

just wanna say firstly lads loving the banter, has made for hilarious reading.
As for the car advice, firstly i aint no professional that knows everything, but from what i know i would suggest:
Pug 206 Gti - dont know much about them?
306 Rallye - friend has one & loves it. very quick in his opinion, plus cos its quite rare, think it would hold its money a bit better.
306 Xsi - same really, but cheaper & i've been told just as good as the gti6 but a bit quicker due to better gear ratio's (6 speed not really needed)
Polo gti - good call, well built cars etc, again rare so hold value.
Starlet Gt - quick, but as said becoming very CHAV
Clio Williams - sounds interesting, but dont know much about them.
Pug 106 Gti - 2 friends have had one & really rate them, but again its the chav side though.
Saxo Vts - again good cars, but surely to much abuse off friends?
What about a Corrado VR6 (G60 tend to break been told) They were on Top Gear not so long back & very highly rated.
Fiat Coupe (not my choice) or Celica GT ST205 or Prelude Vtec if fancy something more coupe?

YEAH I KNOW THIS IS TOO MUCH & OFF THE PRICE A BIT, BUT HEY A NICE CAR !!!
(SORRY IF A BIG POST & NOT WHAT YOU LOOKING AT)
P.S NOT MY CAR FOR SALE
1991 205 1.9 GTi Non Sun roof model in red,
This car has been built by me and a few choice people over the last 5 years with no expense spared and the car has had very very little use, under 10k in 5 years.
Its never been out in the wet for 5 years or out in winter.
The conversion is the best I've seen really and its got all the right parts on it.
It's a super road/track car, looks pretty much standard untill you open her up!!
All the original interia is still in the car, and the rear seats have been altered to fit around the rear of the roll cage.
The Saftey Devices Cage has plates welded into the shell and all the floor was re-painted and waxoil'd.
The engine was re-built when I bought it and was originally on injection. But I had Mikeanics fit a set of weber carbs and 3D map'd ignition. It revs to 8k no problem and pulls really nice mid range too.
The spec is as follows:-
Mi-16 conversion using Mi-16 loom with Weber DCOE 45's on Longman Inlet Manifolds, 3D mapped ignition, CAT Cam 283 degree & 10.8 mm Lift rally cams, CAT Cam "True Lock" vernia pulleys, ITG Megaflow Air Filter with laser cut back plate, Quaiffe ATB Diff, Mi-16 Gear box, Quick Shift, AB Motorsport breather system, Baffled sump, Grp N engine and suspension bushes, Gaz suspension kit with Eibach Springs, 23mm Peugeot Sport Torsion Bars, 309 GTi Front anti-roll bar. Safety Devices bolt/weld in roll cage, 283mm front disc conversion with Pagid 16 groove discs and Mintex M1144 Pads, Omex rev limiter/shift light.
The car has covered under 100 miles since having a load of work done, its had:-
new cam belt kit and cam belt covers,
CAT cams and vernia pulleys,
new rotor arm and cap,
new power steering rack,
re-built rear beam with Grp. N bushes and 23mm torsion bars, the rear beam also has grease nipples in it so it can now be greased.
All new rear brake pipes and under section waxoil'd,
New anti-roll bar bushes,
Brand New Fogs lights,
Brand New Head lights,
Re-furbished alloy wheels,
And rolling road set up by Mikeanics.
This is one of the best you will ever find and I'm only selling it as it never gets used and seems a shame.
The car has been featured in Retro Cars and Performance GTi.
Looking for about 4500 for it, or it will stay a sleep in my workshop.

Mk1 Astra GTE ... there's one on ebay with a 16v red top in it.
I only had the 1.8 8v Mk1 GTE but it was one of the best most fun cars o drive I have had.
I just got a Impreza Wagon for £3k so I think that's the best hot hatch type car.
