The stock Spec C goes around the Nurburgring 5 seconds quicker than the stock Evo IX GSR on the same day/same driver. Some argue that the GSR is a better comparison to the normal JDM STI, and that the RS should be compared to the Spec C.
With the Evo though you can add about 100-120 BHP to this basic spec with exhaust, fuel pump and remap. The stock turbo and injectors are larger, intercooler is in the right place, manifold is much shorter. Basically the engine would give me the power band I wanted, and also inexpensively. At the turbo upgrade or larger capacity levels above that the Evo has more reliable and inexpensive options.

I'm currently seriously considering selling my STI 8 and getting an Evo VIII (can't afford a IX unfortunately). I wouldn't swap it for a basic 260bhp Evo, but the MR models look gorgeous. I think Evos are much better looking than Scoobs, but prefer the sound of a Scooby.
The main thing going for them in comparison to the Scooby though IMO is (relative) exclusivity. The only Evo VIII I know of in my area is a basic one in silver, whereas there are at least 10 newage WRX's and STI's. A nice black or red FQ340 will stand out a mile...
