Personally id rather the 2 ltr due to its rev happyness

Although clearly the 2.5 is a cheap upgrade IMO

I was thinking about a 2.5 conversion, as it's a stronger engine!!

Wilfy also mentioned Zak

Must be honest, I'm thinking about doing the engine myself. At the moment, the only salvagable part is the heads, so when I get the car back, I'll take the engine out, strip it down to find the extent of the damage, strip the heads and port and polish them, recut the valve seats, port the inlet manifold and throttle body, and a few other bits and pieces, like my new mod which I pick up tomorrow

Have also been thinking about a P1 Short block, but have heard the crank is also a weak point, so will try and get a STI 9 crank, and modify the bearings.

the possabilities are endless

What made it go pop? Had you been hammering it for long distances along the autobahn's or something?

Glad you're finally back in one piece

no mate, I can honestly say that when it first started knocking, I was doing 90mph, so I slowed down to 60-50, which seemed ok as it quietened right down to nothing, then it got louder then went bang before I could pull over!!
The main bearings failed, as I could feel the crankshaft crashing through the clutch pedal and gearbox
Cookie was behind me and he could hear the engine over his exhaust and stereo

and thats why I didn't go........... paranoid about a) crashing it b) blowing up along the way.

Still on the bright side you've been on a plane for the first time and now you can get a proper 4 x 4 (400 bhp x 400 lbs torque)

The STI lump will go in, but it will need a lot of mods, especially with the electronics, as that engine has variable valve timing, which classic's haven't got.

nice idea though

Thanks Chris, it's greatly appreciated

I'm waiting to get my car back first before I finally decide what to do, the options I'm looking at are a P1 engine, or the 2.5 conversion.
Jonjo is talking me into the 2.5 There is a modified engine on ebay which has done 2000 miles apparently, but has an oil leak, the spec seems really good, but don't want to risk spending a grand on it if the oil leak can't be fixed, so who knows
