Yes OllyK, I dont know what the size of the laser spot would be at any distance, theoretically it should not increase in size, but I imagine that it will. If the device is hand held I bet it will wander about a bit. At any significant distance the apparent size of the car will be small and I would be surprised if the signal did not get close enough to the detector to fire it off.
It sounded to me that he was a fair distance away from the van when he first saw it.

AFAIK
the aim point for the laser is the front number plate,
now you try sighting on an object using a hand held device, and holding a laser spot steady for the reading to register!!
