As for 'poor mans whatever', what an absurd and silly point. EVERY car is a poor mans something else. Buy a Ferrari F430 why? As for the Saab vs Boxster S statement - well its really not worth saying anything more is there......
Dont get out of your pram now, I was merely interested in what sort of power they (porsches) give out top end. I dont make a habbit of speeding down the M6 and with it breaking the law, infact, Ive never done it before! I, Infact have never driven my car to its full capacity and I was quite shocked at how quick it was, I must say, I scared myself a little. ...but who out there hasn't done it?
Imagaine the driver of the porsche going home and saying to his wife/girlfriend : ' I was blown off today on the M6 by a pink blancmange'
second thoughts, maybe he kept shtum.

I would imagine the porsche having a higher top speed would mean it would reel a scoob in on a long run.

200 bhp ? (it wasnt an S) vs 150 bhp, from a standstill, girl driving and it sounded like an auto/tiptronic, it got past and was howling but it didnt seem that fast, not making it up, thats how it happened. And anyway, why shouldnt a Saab be anywhere near a Boxster performance wise, 500 quid puts a chip in it that gives 225 bhp which may even things up.

If you read what I said I did point out that I would rather have a Porsche than the Saab or a Scoob anyday, just its not really worth buying one if you are just after something to blast away from traffic lights, its a package.

I dont really care how fast anybody's car is TBH, and given the choice/pennies, I would pick a porsche over a scoob.
Me being me, got exited at the victory I had over the porsche driver, he prolly let me win, but hey, it was fun!

dick cheese more like dick head if you ask me .if these threads are so bad why read them?or worse reply to them?do you actually drive your car or just pose ?but then again you probably have a sport tarted up to look like a wrx and thats why eh.whats wrong all that whey gone to your head.as for the porker debate yes may be a class drivers car but they are slow as ive proven many times.and if people want to drive there cars fast thats there option as we all dont live next to a track or want to drive round and round doing the same bends myself i pefer a nice twisty road called the bee hive were you are only a danger to yourself.enough said i think

I have to disagree here - and go with gutmann pug..

Having had a 911 and now a scooby I think I can take a reasonable shot at describing their respective differences..

Put simply ;

On roads or conditions which are consistently below 80mph the scooby will beat most porsches...

On roads or conditions which are consistently above 80mph and frequently on towards 150mph + the porsche will beat most scoobys...

This means that in general day to day conditions the porsche will get a pasting but this does NOT make the porsche a SLOW car...it simply means that on the public highway the porsche is simply unable to reach it's peak operating speeds...

I think Mountainbike vs Racer pretty much sums it up...

Personally its a spectator sport...... I love to see you chav numpties that go on day after day saying how they 'had' a car (....that they usually can't afford) and then spend the rest of the thread defending themselves saying they'd prefer to be in the other marque ........

It so boring really - but then again you drive a jap 4-door saloon and I don't. Thats the real fun bit for me

I followed a Boxster S (986-series) in my 4.2 Cerb, and believe me they're not slow. I guess I could have passed if I'd wanted to bounce off the limiter, but it wouldn't have been easy going. Fact is, once you get to around 5s 0-60 (that's RWD 5s, not 4WD 5s) there's not a whole bunch of difference.

I couldn't agree with you more, based on myself owning UK turbo, P1 & now 911. I just appreciate my car for what it is, it meets my needs and I wouldn't care if a skoda flew past me. The day I get upset because there are faster cars out on the road than mine is the day I will ..............

Well put you lot!!!There's always another car on the road that will embaress yours, I know that from experience (unfortunately), but its all about enjoying what you've got.A Porsche with only 280bhp is a good match for a well set up Scoob, so well done for beating it, although I thought that after 80mph he would have started to pull away. I enjoy my Scooby because of what it can do round the twisties, as in a straight line I can't keep up with any of my mates A reasonably fast road car is around 300bhp imo, with well set up suspension and good mid range torque...always makes you smile

Ok here is my experience of one.

I have drove my buddies back to back with my almost standard MY99 Scoob and i can tell you this. Even though it is a 2.5 it is by no means slow - no matter who tells you they are. The handling and grip in the dry is superb and would give my Subaru a run for its money and as for that engine note when you floor it it is to die for.

Ok it is not as fast outright than my Scoob (unless on top speed) and the way a Scoob threads together a series of corners is uncanny , i put this down to excellent handling and the turbo's midrange punch out of bends.
A 2.5 Boxster you really have to rev-it.

I would imagine a 3.2 trouncing my Subaru quite easily - now a modified STi
that may be a different matter

Horses for courses, but i dont consider them slow

I went from an 03 WRX @ 270bhp (TEK3 etc) to a 2.7 986.
It was a very good decision, and I never regretted it for one minute.

I tested the 987 "S" and that was some car I can tell you, very very quick - not far off 911 pace, if anything hard to tell the difference.

Its one of the only cars I have owned where I enjoy driving it every time I get into it.

OK, owned 2.7 Boxster, a Boxster S, a 911 C2 and now a 996 Turbo. Before the Boxsters I had an STi Scooby & before that a UK Scooby Turbo.

In straight line the 2.7 aint that quick, it aint slow, just not fast fast.
The Box S is a much better drive, not quite as quick in a straight line as a Scooby, but through the bends as fast, the handling & balance is sublime making it very fast accross country.
The C2 is as fast easily as an STi Scooby up to 100, then faster over 100mph (top end over 175mph which p1sses on most Scooby's)

As for the Turbo? Point to point its the fastest car I have ever owned or been in, its amazing.

Has to be said the reason I went to Porsche's was mainly the bad image that the Scooby's were getting.

Let's face facts - If Porsche made a 280BHP RWD Ł22K 4 door saloon to the standard of the 911 or Boxster we wouldn't be having this discussion

I would imagine an awful lot of sports cars manufacturers would suddenly find themselves without *any* customers!

Was never a great fan of boxsters until I drove my friends S, which I thought was fantastic. For an everyday car, with good performance, great handling, roof up/down motoring I thinks its a hard package to better.

He now has a 996TT and as RoShamBo says, its by some margin the fastest point to point car I've ever been in. In fact I don't think that there are many unmodified cars that would get anywhere close to 996TT on a mix of UK roads.

you lot really need to get out more!! if you really want to race a porsche then come over here and cruise the autobahn for 5 minutes and a few will come along shortly.

Beating a Boxster is nothing to write home about, I used to woop boxsters in my slightly modded MY00 but now it is properly modded and remapped I am after the 911s. fortunately I do not have to do it in bursts or keep looking out for blue lights. you will never get a fair result on a UK road no matter much you reckon you will. All turbo charged cars are quick off the mark or pick up quicker than an NA car so naturally you are going to get away from the porsche but give it time to wind up and he will be all over you like a cheap suit. Do it properly and stop boasting about your shallow victories.

you lot have it all wrong and jump to far to many conclusions.i said the porker was a good car but we are talking a boxster not a 911 turbo or other wise as for the numpty that thinks i drive a 4 door jap car what are you doing on here if you dont know a type r has 2 doors and a nother thing this chav thing you all go on about none of you actually know what one is as they started life in Newcastle upon tyne and were called charvas and the papers took it upon themselfs to rename them they are acutally young kids wearing rockport shoes with tracksuit bottoms and stripy lacost jumpers and small baseball caps i think you lot mean the max power brigade and at 36 iam far to old for that(i dont do body kits and daft spoilers only power mods like 90% of the people on here)

so to recap boxsters not 911 turbo or otherwise
not chavs but max power brigade
not slagging off porkers
and maybe the slow thing was a bit off the mark but compared to my type r they were (boxsters that is as my freind had one a raced it more times than i can remenber)

sorry for the rant but this hole thread was only asking how fast is a boxster
