Your only real protections are if,

If the car is not as described. Sold as seen on the invoice declares the seller as not making any declarations of condition. But just try getting any money back from a private seller.

The 'Good title' clause in the consumer credit act 1974. This means that the 'innocent purchaser' cannot have the car taken off them by a finance company if their is money owing.
