The trick is to keep just under 3000 RPM ..... then the mpg shoots up to the 35+ area

The beauty is that, at 2900 RPM you are travelling at about 75MPH

No speeding ticket AND money in the bank due to a saving on petrol ... everyones a winner!!

I think that depending if you your is UK spec or an import is a major factor on how many revs you do at what speed. I heard that some of the Jap imports are limited to 114mph so rev hight for the speed they are doing where as the UK spec cars rev much lower at comparable speeds.

 

If mpg is what you pride yourself on why dont you do the whole Subaru
community a favour..... sell up and buy diesel Passat or something

My brake pads and discs are still original at 63500miles .... I am actually getting concerned over this as it appears to be well over the 'normal' - I suspect that changing them will be difficult as they haven't been disturbed in 5 1/2 years.

This is, actually, starting to puzzle even me .......... they are still fine, but I am noticing a bit of fade now (I guess the discs are worn thin?).

But 64,000miles has just been turned and the brakes are the same as they were when they left the shores of Japan!

I do drive with vision, I slow before junctions and roundabouts ..... if you use your brakes you have wasted energy (wasted energy = wasted money!)

Their is a difference between driving like a prat and driving reasonably quickly where conditions allow.

On MPG, while my car used to be a weekend car, it now gets used all the time. MPG between fun and normal driving never seemed to vary too much and was about ~20, swapped to 95ron (STi Type UK) last week and my MPG has gone up !

 

I agree ........... of course, the speed limit puts a brake on driving at whatever speed you desire!

But, I get cheesed off with CHAVS telling me I shouldn't own one of the best cars in the world, just because I don't drive like they do (like a complete utter ********!)

I have seen them ........ BIG exhaust, Music blasting, Baseball Cap wearing, CockLink watching GIMPS ............ Derrrrr brains!!

I agree, you do get a lot of chavs with their "BIG exhaust, Music blasting, Baseball Cap wearing" etc... BUT a lot of people on here feel that "cocklinks" make a differnce. i think you should remember that and stop ranting about them . everyone here knows you opinion on them....

Lets look at the facts shall we??

1. The Impreza has a Knock Sensor already, why duplicate it?

2. The Subaru Knock Sensor is attached to, and talks directly to, the ECU.

3. The CockLink is FULLY adjustable .... adjust it until you only get a green light, WTF??

It is an utterly pointless piece of crap ....... fully deserving of its COCKLINK title!

If it is set up properly, and remember its adjustable!! By the time you have seen a RED light, your brain has registered it (remember that if you have a CockLink your brain is much slower than normal!). you have adjusted your throttle position, you have a blown up engine!!!

So, at its BEST, it tells you with a RED light that your engine has gone BANG!!

Thats GOOD then!!!!

Not sure that is totally correct.

Knock does not destroy an engine straight away. It is cumulative damage (as far as I remember). The knocklink could be used as a diagnostic tool in certain circumstances, warning of knock occuring and allowing the user to do something about it (anyone know if the factory knock sensor can fail without the ECU knowing ?).

The quote 'remember that if you have a CockLink your brain is much slower than normal!' tends to suggest intollerance, come on your better than that.

As to their effectivness of actually detecting knock, I cannot say.

Anyway, as to why your MPG has gone down, does anyone know if the calorific values of 95,98,99 are the same ?

Seems odd that mine has gone up with 95.

 

From the title I was hoping there would be some useful debate in here regarding the release of 99RON fuel at Tesco, but it just seems to have turned into a stage for Mr Lewis to entertain himself by playing devil's advocate.

Would anyone care to get this thread back on topic as I, and I'm sure a few others, are genuinely interested in the fuel?

Thats EXACTLY what I posted a year or two back and I got slated by the **** Brigade who said that the engine blows up so quickly that the Subaru ECU cannot react in time!!

Of course pinking doesn't blow your engine up as the ***** say, well - not straight away anyway ............

The objection I have about the CockLink is that you can actually ADJUST it to get a green light if it is showing red ................. thats like bending the fuel gauge pointer upwards if you don't like it saying that you are empty!! ie. it's completely useless!!

Back to fuel ............ I now have Sainburys in and seem to be running up at 28mpg (which is a truly remarkable turnaround from the TESCO stuff)

I've never seen anything like it ....... Tesco 99 RON makes my mpg halve!!

I will risk it again, just to check - but watching the gauge moving had me thinking that I really was losing fuel through a hole or something!
