Amazing how it's utterly pointless threads like this that tend to go on the longest. Couldn't resist adding to it.

Like me I'd imagine most are on this forum because they've got/had/want a Scooby, love em and like to hear what other enthusiasts have to say. I have to wonder why some of the other posters are here though, nothing better to do I guess

Still, carry on, it's giving me a good laugh. I'll just get on with enjoying my driving at a pace that suits me

It is amazing, but it is no wonder the thread lasts so long.

My original post was a tongue in cheek insight into how a stripped out GTi-6 is equally as quick as these so called monsters. The preceeding 14 pages consist of 3 types of people:

1. People who recognise power to weight and accept what was said, irrespective of what car they own.

2. People that refuse to accept what is being said - it's them who I love the most.

3. People just winding others up. Usually consisting of people from category 1.

It is just so comical how people refuse to accept what happened.

Heh, yeah right. It was clearly a deliberate attempt to wind-up and provoke.

It worked like a charm

Shame that's going. Looks a decent motor indeed!!!

Nothing wrong with the GTi-6, i remember a 306 rallye giving my PPP'd MY00 a run for its money though i was quicker
Anyway, my new 9.5 yearold 306 S16 will be on the road soon, after the headgasket has been sorted (plus the radiator, 80 quid new ) and the brakes stripped down.... will still be costing me less than 1k for an immaculate condition one including the buying price (no dents etc, just needs a good clean )

Nice one with the S16!! Will it be for track use?? (I assume). Be good to hear your progress with that project.....

Yeah a PPP'd would have the necessary 'ooomff' to pull away from a GTi-6. My slightly modded and stripped '6 was only equally as quick as a standard WRX. Despite the "In Denial Club's" comments.

Radiator - I've just ordered a new one (after limping back from Germany with loads of water and RadWeld....not good) for the GTi-6. I ordered an ally one, from a company called Nissens. £120 delivered. "Apparently" it gives 20% better cooling.....hmm. Still, it looks nice though, nice and shiny. Should appeal to scooby owners come to think of it:

A) It's shiny (some love their shiny bits - bonnets up usually give that one away)

B) It's quoted as 20% better cooling (...and we also know how some scooby owners just love making up random numbers and stats).

Please note, the word "some".

Around 90% I'd say

Keep us informed of the S16 (p'p'p'please) - always good to see a work in progress

This S16 has a nice hole in the radiator, my other 2 306's both have new rads, they just rot
Its having the headgasket done next week, probably do the brakes the weekend of that week, ill get some pics when i can, never owned an S16, though ive had 2 GTi-6's so will make a change (car cost 410 quid off ebay! bargain! well looked after ).
That ally rad sounds the bees knees (got a link to them? ) not having one of those valeo ones on again if i can help it, just worried about the heater matrix now

Love this thread. I had a 306 GTi6 all over my ar'se the other week. I've had this shed of a 318i for the past few months while my car is off the road and not being to used to the RWD I wasn't going too quickly through the corners.
As soon as we got to the straight bit, the 306 went for the overtaking maneuvre. I kept my foot down and the poor sod had to duck back in behind me. Now obviously the 306 is a quicker car than my sh'tbag bmw, but how he couldn't take me is a mystery. So anyway, if i can hold off a GTi 6 I guess a WRX wouldn't be too much competition either then eh?

Overtaking on a single cariageway and sitting next to each other in 2 separate lanes with no on-coming traffic on a dual carrriageway is a little different - '*****' become involved on single carriageways. Or whether you're just a bit dangerous of course!! I couldn't "get past" some cars when I had my e36 M3 Evo - though if it were a side by side race it changes things somewhat as there are no other parameters that affect the outcome. That's why sitting next to that WRX was such a blatantly great way of proving power to weight means more than simply pub talk and power figures.

In defence of the WRX, and any car for that matter.....

When 2 cars that have reasonably similar power (to weight) sit beside each other on full chat, there HAS to be atleast 50bhp or so difference to notice much difference, this is from experience of places like the Nurburgring - it's an eye opener!! We're talking matters of half a second from 0-100 which in reality is not much at all.

Still, I was surprised that the WRX was no quicker at all....then again maybe not.

I suspect that's the reason Subaru are offering a free PPP at the moment. As a performance car the standard UK WRX is looking a little average amongst the newer hot hatch competition.

Lee, that`s incorrect mate. I`ve driven a Focus ST, and I currently own a WRX, and the Focus is definitely not as quick, nor is a Civic Type R, which I owned before the WRX. Not saying there`s nothing out there as quick, simply that I`ve driven all three, and out of those three, the WRX is the quickest.

I would like to know how you quantify "fast".

A post classic WRX is indeed quicker to 60 than a Civic Type-R, however it is slower to 100. The Civic is therefore the quicker car. The WRX gets it's extra gain from the 0-20 launch due the aid of the 4WD system. However, how often do you, on road or track, stop to a hault, then have a standing start race??!?! Unless of course you're a drag strip/red light boy racer type.

Civic Type-R is a quicker car than a WRX, FACT. the WRX may "feel" quicker however.

Senior_AP - I think you've crossed the fine line between a bit of gentle trolling and an obsessive need to keep your own thread alive. The only other person on here who likes to use "FACT" with such emphasis when actually its clearly a case of subjectively choosing the criteria you want to prove your own point is pslewis.

You probably need to ask yourself whether that is who you want to emulate ?

I accept these comments and I understand why you have made them.

It is somewhat strange whan someone states that car 'A' is quicker than car 'B' when it is, a "fact" (sorry but a fact is is) that this is not the case.

As for the thread - I don't think it needs much help from me, most on here are doing a sterling job and after 15 pages there is still debate.....this is the whole point of SN and the very reason we are all here, do you not agree?

When there is no debate the thread will fritter away. However as long as statements like "WRX is quicker than a CTR" still get used I've a funny feeling that may be some time - whether I intervene or not.

Thanks.

Sorry Tony.....link to the Rad as requested:

http://www.106parts.com/mainpages/contact.htm

Email this guy, he doesn't advertise them for the 306 (only the 106) however he does stock them, so drop him a mail and ask for specific model. As said, not sure of the worth of an ally rad over standard but I've ordered mine so it's too late.

These are the fella's that manufacture them.

The ally rads are good, but quite delicate so take care fitting them.

Tony, its a guy called Mark IIRC that runs 106parts, and nice and close for us - he also runs www.strutbracer.co.uk.

I'm only going off the one I had on my 405 - it didnt seem to have any sides to it so handling it needed care.

I mean it was delicate when handling it, seemed to cope fine in day to day use though.

Well my radiator finally went fully today while on the motorway greeted by a gush of water at 80mph managed to make it home without the temp getting too high.

So how quick is that site at sending their radiators ? As I was meant to be driving to Bristol on Thursday
