Vista is the desktop product, next gen XP, the server product is still Longhorn as they haven't released an official name for it yet.

As you can seen from the official site

Vista looks like a more polished XP, not OS X like at all.

Ah Vista. MS's attempt to try and one-up Mac OS X, and I think they aren't going to do it. It's not what it should have been, which is a complete, from the group up rewrite (ok, so OS X wasn't strictly that as it was based on NeXT Step) it's a bugfixed and slightly rewritten XP.

I dislike PC's from a support viewpoint. I've been supporting macs for over 14 years and yes there are some odd and tricky issues out there, but nowhere near the pain I've endured when I've tried to support PC's. Driver conflicts (good old IRQ clashes) and god knows what else, oh yeah, the Registry, now there's a horrible thing if ever I came across one.

OS X 10.0 was shocking, and 10.1 wasn't much better, 10.2 was somewhat better, but I feel that 10.3 was the first truly stable release of OS X, all of the bits where there and worked pretty well. 10.4 is a leap forward. however Dashboard is a bit silly, I much prefer Konfabulator, more so now it's free.

There's nothing wrong with the registry. It's very straightforward to understand, and does the job it was designed for quite nicely. Not sure why you think it's horrible?

Because it's a large single point of failure.

Over the last 6 years I've worked in environments with 850, 1600 and 2000 servers respectively, never had any fail with registry problems.

I work all day with Wintel servers and come home to a nice Powermac running Tiger OSX

I changed primarily because I was spending all my time waiting for my P4 1.7ghz to convert RAW photos to JPEG in Photoshop. Once I got my Mac it was like a dream come true
I can run a batch to convert 50 pics on the Mac and in the same time it would take to convert 5 on the PC my Mac has done 50.
I don't know what it is about Macs but they are just easier to use. I kid you not, when I bought mine I had *never* ever used on before. Quite a bold move really, spending almost £2k on a top of the range Mac with no prior experience...
You switch it on, use it, let it sleep, use it, let it sleep etc etc I hardly ever reboot the thing and surfing the web is so much better than a PC. Have a look at the speed difference between Safari and IE.

No virus guard installed, no popup blockers, no active x crap installing istself and best of all my 9yr old boy now wants a Mac Mini.
They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for.

Danny,
Probably because the original version (keyhole? something like that) was PC only. However, google does have the knack of releasing Mac compatible versions of it's apps. Their site does mention it's working on a Mac version, plus, they also say you could try running it using the virtual PC emulator, but it might not be as speedy as running on a real PC.

This type of stuff will become more interesting when there's an updated version of VPC for the intel macs (you can run VPC on an intel based mac, but it's very slow, slower than normal, as it's an emulator running on an emulator) that uses the correct instruction set instead of emulating it.
