Sam - convoy to the Ring from Dover, usually two night stopover at hotel, apres ring is usually as good as the day on the track.
Rough estimate of costs :
Ferry - £130
Hotel - £100
Petrol - £150
Ring tickets - £100
Beer and food - £100
European breakdown - £40
Add wear and tear etc
Is all worth it !!! Will be the best european trip you would have ever been on.
Do your homework as the ring is not very forgiving and can be very expensive should it all go wrong. First time would recommend you come as a passenger and share the costs with someone.
There will be a few of us flying over and hiring crap cars with full insurance, can be more fun !

ps. believe me SamUK, it's good advice from LordLucan... fly and hire summat, get one with a low excess, and forget about tyres, armco and big ends for a few days.... i've been as a passenger 4 times and driven over once... unless you got summat REALLY special to prove passenger / flyhire it a few times 1st

It will be a public weekend - turn up and buy a lap ticket and go. Your insurance should cover you, mine does as it is classed as a public toll road.
It can be very very busy though, at times like being on the M25 !! The bikers are the worst as they like to see just how close they can get to your car whilst overtaking you.
Recommend you buy John Felsteads superb Ring DVD for homework !

The bikers are the worst are they???? ......... hmmmmmmmmmm another car driver who thinks he owns the ring.
As a general rule A quick bike catches cars at a very very fast rate and its down to YOU to see him coming and get the hell out of the way, the same as when a car does it. The harder part is overtaking them. Many dont have wing mirrors and if they do they are spending so much of their time cranked over that they dont see you anyway. I nearly always wait till I get a signal from them (boot out, hand out, indicator) before I overtake.
Remember they are as entitled to be there as you and it doesnt take much to have one off.
Take your own car Sam and enjoy it. DO CHECK your insurance though, dont assume you are covered. Alot of policies have the ring as an exclusion.
VERY IMPORTANT is travel insurance. German hospitals are very expensive and you dont want to be footing an unfortunate bill (god forbid)
First time there you wont be quick. You may well think you are till you get overtaken by a standard 1.6 focus estate. Been there seen it, had it done to me.
Spend as much time as you can spectating. There are loads of great places to watch from. Its half the fun.
Get as many passenger laps as you can. Dont be afraid to ask the owner of the ferrari / GT3RS for a lap, if the seat is free he may well let you in.
Take your helmet
Make sure you prepare your car. A hard driven scoob will use a set of front pads over a weekend. So if yours are half gone now, take a spare set with you.
Dont worry too much about the hype ...... go out and have a few laps, keep your eyes on your mirror and enjoy yourself.
