Suprnova ?
This is always an emotive subject, and at the end of the day it IS illegal to use such file sharing networks for information of this kind.
But......
Whether you, I or anyone else agree's or disagree's, file sharing will continue, hacks and patches will continue and the underground work groups behind these will continue.
I remember the old days of the "REAL" BBS's - the old underground ones before the WWW.
Whether BIT TORRENT sites stop or others replace and take over, piracy will always be around as it's a fact of technology being made available to the masses. I'm afraid to say that since the inception of the WWW, it's only going to get easier to do such things.
What would be interesting...... is that out of all the so-called lost billions piracy costs, how much would they lose if it was not an option? I have a sneaky suspicion that if piracy was not a option then a large % of the people getting of hold of pirate material would'nt even buy it in the first place regardless.

And Shaun:
I used to download Atari 800 games from a private BBS -- it used to take almost all day to download the 48K disk version of something that I wanted.
Amazing how times change.
I still have my 300 baud WS2000 modem somewhere...
Steve.

It is a crime and as such boasting about it or sharing information about it on a public bulletin board can't be a good idea. If everyone kept it on the quiet and didn't try to make money out of it - I'm sure Suprnova wasn't a charity case - like the old days it would be less of a problem for people like myself who spend a fair chunk of time convincing people that theft is theft.
Now i get frustrated by this. I can completely see both sides of the argument.
However, when the whole napster thing kicked off I used it to replace my old record collection (remember them) with 12" mixes that the record companies have deleted and don't even sell anymore. Even if I was the Sultan of Brunei i couldn't have bought them from HMV.
I am a huge fan of Depeche Mode, I buy everything they release in all formats. It costs me a fortune but they insist on releasing promo only versions (usually better) of their tracks and only making them available to a few people. I WILL download those tracks. Aree the band losing out? They were never going to charge for them and in fact gave them away for free. It's the only way that I, as a real fan, will ever get hold of them. In that respect I feel justified using p2p software.
I have even asked the record company to send me the promos and I will pay for them but they will not do this, instead they send it to someone who doesn't even like the band and sells it on ebay for a quick buck.

what is your final software cost & how much do you sell it to your distributors? Im sure youll see a large difference in your costs & their costs
im sure you would be in agreement in saying after all my years of hard work we only charge x amount & shops can earn double the amount, surely youll want that extra cost
i have no problem paying extra to the people who made & deserve it but not to greedy shops

Ok so it is ilegal, but, for example one of the most common forms has to be dvd/video copying. Now all in all it does cost the comapanys who make films money, but having said that, the companys who make them, like fox/paramount/warner bros etc don't consider a film successfull unless it make 3 times the profit it cost to make, and that is at the cinema only!!!! so all this clap trap about the price includes making the movie cost advertising etc is bull, by the time it comes to dvd/video all the costs are paid for, so except for compyng the dvds/case/covers etc its all profit, you shoud realise it cost on avarage 50p to make a dvd and sell in the shops and that includes everything from manufacture to transport to shops, the rest is profit by the shops and royalty/rrp costs.
has to be said film companies make too much money, films stars make too much money, and as usual its the top ten % that make that money.
so the questions is would i buy a pirate copy for a 5 instead of £19.99 you damn skippy i would, not only that but you can usually get them before they are out at the cinema.

i did a 10 hour session to a bbs in germany on a 1200/75 modem downloading stuff...
got the phone bill in £400 in six months!!!!!!!!!!!!! **** i had to have the phone made incomming only
what really pisses me off is all the bolox the record companys spout...
what was it in the 80,s "home taping is killing music" erm nope
whats killing music is the excessive profiteering and lack of quality that the purchasing public demand!!!
back in the 80,s i used to buy an album a week usually on tape, but occasionally on vynl? cost about £6.99-7.99 (av)
You usualy got about 50-90 minutes of music..
if you got a bum un, it wasnt too bad you only lost £7
contrast today to the superb digital medium..
cost £15(av) content anywhere between 40-74 minutes..
lot of money to throw away on a duff purchase..
and what really pisses me off despite all the whinging and ranting and raving
oh how unethical we are, and how bad the poor artists are being treated, they fail to address two key issues.
WE do not delete back catolouges of albums, it is the record companys!!
do not complain if when we cannot get an album we are looking for, because you have deleted it. likewise for old singles..
Instead of spending ridiculous sums of money on anti piracy protection and anti theft campaigns give the purchasing public something they want!!!
CD info,, yes you know, when you stick a cd into a player, it tells you what the name of the artist or track is..
why the **** are cd,s still produced that do not have this basic info there.
no wonder people are burning there own..
and finally...
BRING DOWN THE PRICES!!!!
if an album is purchased over the net, the price should reflect the quality & quantity of the product. why should we pay stupid money for old singles and albums..
Mart

No doubt you earn twice as much as you did in the 80's.
>BRING DOWN THE PRICES!!!!
To below zero? Fact is people are paying probably £25 a month for a broadband connection so that they can download illicit content... much better to give your money to BT huh!!
>if an album is purchased over the net, the price should reflect the quality & quantity >if the product. why should we pay stupid money for old singles and albums..
If I want an old album I get off my **** and visit a shop that sells second hand, that's too much effort for most.

why is the technology to do this readily avaiable then,
if you have a windows media player it has
[now playing][library][rip][burn][sync][guide]
on it, so microsoft have developed this to make it easy for the likes of me to burn cds,
i had no cd writer in my last computer now this one has it all set up for me, if its illegal why do the companies lay it on a plate for us?
