You are getting rubbing because your tyres are the wrong size for a classic on 18's, you should have 215/35/18's, 225/35 at the most. 40 profile is to big, especially at 225 wide.
I run 18" wheels with a 45mm offset, with 215/35/18 tyres and mine is lowered 30mm. I get no rubbing atall.
I had bought the wheel with the 225/40/18s on them. My next attempt was going to be 225/35/18. 215/35/18 has too small of a sidewall. I'd have a bent rim every other day between the bridge joints I go over or the pot holes I narrowly miss here in New York.
