I had engine failure once and had to do a forced landing under some 11 Kv ones. Surprising how low they look when you have to fly under them!

Dammit, I'm currently looking for a new house and thought I'd found a bargain (4 beds, detached, en-suite, double garage, corner plot, raised higher than the surrounding houses, gardens to 3 sides etc etc all for £180k). Walked round to look at it and BAM, fooking great pylon 3 houses away

Lot of tin-foil hat wearers on here aren't there?

My family home was in line with a pylon and the family has been there for 25 years with zero ill effects. In fact, as a group we're a very healthy bunch, seldom getting even a cold.

I don't know if it'd sell easily but then my mum and dad bought the home they wanted as opposed to one they would be looking to sell again in a few years to continue the search for the 'right one'.

yup we have a massive one next door here at work
makes nice noises when its raining

sometimes when i wear a belt with a large buckle, i feel like i walk slightly lopsided, i think its being attracted to the big red things that crackle in the rain???

I tell you one thing - there are a lot of parents having to bury their kids having lost them to cancer. I don't know what is causing all this cancer in the younger generation but passive smoking and electricity and the the like can't be helping !

I wouldn't live under a pylon if they paid me to !

If you ask me it may be more down to feeding them crap out of microwave ovens in plastic containers and crap processed food as opposed to 'proper food'. Sitting all day in front of a TV all day wouldn't help either I'd imagine.

Maybe it's the sun getting stronger, maybe it's something we don't even know about....

There are less kids dying in the UK nowadays than ever before - FACT. The medical world didn't even know about cancer that long ago so the deaths back then were attributed to various organ 'failures' or sicknesses. You can't possibly know that more people, let alone children are dying of cancer than 10000, 1000, 100 or even 50 years ago.

micky.. thats a substation and they are transformers so should make a nose.

They will build them inside a building to reduce noise. AFAIK all new ones are indoor.

And thats only a small one.

Electromagnetic fields are not good for you, even at 50 Herz, they are strong around high voltage cables.

I would avoid the problem.

Sorry - not talking little kids.

Just talking about parents out-living their "kids".

I'm talking about the number of people in their 30's, 40's and 50's that are dying before their parents. Something must be affecting them more than their parents ?

there are 2 large long ones behind the wash in the buildings!!

i must get bonus points for the phone mast ?

edit, just had a look there is 2 massive long buildings and 2 other bricked buildings, the part you can see in the photo is very small, if this is classed as a small substation that i can not imagine a large version

this thing is massive IMO, there site is about twice the size of ours

I see what you're saying now and on the face of it it makes more sense but in reality nothing's really changed except the fact that news can be spread much more quickly and easily nowadays. Even 100 years ago you would struggle to find out that the entire middle aged population of a village in spain was outlived by its parents.

Check with the local authority to see if there are any plans to remove the pylons as they have been slowly doing it round here in the North East. If so you buy cheap wait till they come down and instantly make a killing!!!!

They have just built a small housing estate right in the middle of some pylons close by though and surprise surprise all the houses sold pretty bloody quickly - They were not cheap either!!!

The only semi-convincing argument I have seen to suggest pylons are harmful is that the magnetic field they produce *could* attract cancer causing particles present in the surrounding air from pollution and concentrate them into an area around the pylon.

It is a fact that while the electromagnetic radiation coming off the pylon MAY not hurt you (not getting into argument over that old chestnut!!!), it DOES attract radioactive gases in the atmosphere such as radon and tritium, and it is these gases that do any damage to the human body, as said before science has found no direct link to this.
As said before tho, your domestic mains supply will probably kick out more of an electromagnetic field than any pylon, due to the aforementioned inverse square law.
To be fair, i'd be a lot more worried about having a house full of gas giving off ionising radiation!!

Typical crab. In the civvy world we're taught to avoid them.

Back on topic. In a word - eyesore. Don't bother.

The effects on health are debateable, but I'd never buy a house near one because they are an eyesore.

when we went out looking at houses there was a radio mast (by the looks of it personal) in the centre of next doors garden that was higher than the house. I felt sorry for the people trying to sell because of that eyesore - noones going to want to live next to that. surely that couldnt have been legal...

I wouldn’t say it’s small, more a medium sized sub. Looks like a 33kv or even maybe a 132kv primary. I’d class a small sub as a 11kv>240/415v secondary distribution sub that you’d find on street corners.
