How do you work out handicaps? and the points?

First when your a member of a club they ask you to hand in 3 score cards, lets say its a par 72 course.

Card 1 you go round in 88

card 2 you go round in 84

card 3 you go round in 92

your average score is - 88
(your score minus course par = your handicap)

88 - 72 = 16

So a handicap of 16.

Points and scoring work from your handicap, I wont confuse the issue by having 3/4 handicaps etc lets work on the full handicap of 16.

Every hold on a golf course is classified by its stroke index. SI, you will see this near the yardage and par classification for each hole.

SI runs from 1 - 18, each hold being SI differently from the easiest to hardest on the course. 1 being the hardest up to 18 being the easiest.

Your handicap of 16 allows you 16 shots over par, so for 16 holes you can score bogey and the remaining 2 you need to par to stay to your handicap.

On the 16 holes you bogey, your handicap is subtracted from your score, so on SI 1 - 16 your gross score will have 1 shot per hole deducted leaving you a net score (your score less handicap).

Stapleford points are worked out on your net scores.

Bogey = 1pt
Par = 2pt
Birdie = 3pt
Eagle = 4pt
Albatros = 5pt (rarer than rocking horse poo)

That is the point range, so the aim of stapleford - if you play to your handicap is to get 18 x net pars leaving you with 36 points, if you score more points then you are playing better than your handicap, less points and you are not playing to your handicap.

I hope that makes sense.

Betts and me went to the range again, and I was hitting 200 yrds with me proper driver, not that slammer thingy, though it's a pity they were going 200 yards.........skywards, and about 50 yards forwards, oh well at least they were pretty straight.....ish.

so, my handicap works out at 44 oh god, need practice, gonna have some lessons and a 9 hole tuition me thinks

 

Guys.... i can arrange a society type day at Southern Valley in Gravesend (10mins from Dartford TUNNEL). See if i can get a good price for 18 holes and a meal after if you want? I do a bit of work for the owner at the club so i should be able to negotiate a good price?
The course is a par 69 links course..no trees or water. check it out if you want..
