This IMO is a perfect example of how difficult it is to sell a modified car. and why i would need to think hard before selling mine as it stands.

This one in particular is similar in spec to mine and probably has about 10k worth of modified parts on it?

If you were to buy a std car of the same year as this one, say 8K (is that too dear for a '98? i dunno) and modify it to the same level, you're looking at 18K to do so. That's not taking any labour into account if you don't have the capability of doing the work yourself.

Now fair enough, when you buy secondhand parts, you don't take the owners labour cost to fit into account, you probably pay on average 50% of the new cost of the parts, so now we have an 8K car with 5K worth of bits on it, which works out at 13K.

The problem is people like to modify their cars the way they want to, a bit like buying a house. You always want tend to change your home to your own liking. How many have bought a house and left it as is because they liked the previous owners tastes? Not many i'm sure.

Modifying cars are similar. People get satisfaction in doing their own thing with their cars than accept others interpretations on how to do it. That justifies the amount of money they spend on their cars, even though they could save in the long run by buying a ready made example.

The other thing with buying a modified car is who is to say it has been done right? It's all very well changing bits on it ***** nilly, but if the whole package doesn't work together then the car can be a right dog and worse than std.

Difficult one this and never easy to sort. Best way IMO is if you (A) know the owner and history of the car or (B) if you don't know anything about the car/owner, have an extended test drive or take someone with Impreza knowledge.

Sorry Scoty, deviating from the purpose of the thread a wee bit, but was just something i'd been thinking about when i seen this thread had went to several pages. Peccy's thread went the same way.

Totaly agree with everything your saying there Alan, was speaking to Johnny yesterday about the same thing.
We recon if this were stripped back to standard and someone bought it as a standard turbo they would likely modify it themselves.

It's an exellent base case car for further modification if you are serious about running one of these as an enthusiast.
These is still much more you could do with this car mind you in terms of modifying
You could upgrade the internals or a bigger engine, 6 speed box etc.......

I feel I have taken the car as far as I want to go, bearing in mind I had 3 different sets of 19's, 3 different ECU's, 3 different turbo's, different exhausts, different suspension set up's etc etc
Don't be put off by the amount of parts this car has seen, I take care of my cars which IMHO is the key to making them last a long time.
Dont know what I've spent on parts over the last 4 years, £35-£40K including the car?

The 13K mark is exactly what I had in mind, I estimated the value of the car as a v good condition 98, and approximatelly halved the price of all the aftermarket parts which are currently fitted to the car.
When for £12,750 as the Japs are superstisious, and dont use 13mm bolts lol

The state of tune it's in just now is prity much how an impreza SHOULD be IMHO, some more power would be nice as I get board fairly quickly if I'm not doing anything to it (another reason why I'm selling it)

BTW long test drives are invited, and bring whoever you feel would settle your mind about buying this car, I know alot about these cars (not everything) and am sure I could answer any qusetions needing answered

Never tried Top Marques to be honest Scoty, may be a good way of going, there's a fair amount of Imprezas in Auto Trader, which is not ideal, but not sure about TM.

As said above, it really is a shame to return the car to standard, especially as there's been a lot of thinking/testing been done, to get the car performing/looking the way it does now.

Been there, done that

My RA was for sale last year after TOTB2, it had just proven itself as the fastest Impreza in the UK for the past 2 years. It was for sale at less than £12k........no interest whatsoever

Stripped the juicy bits and sold them for £6500, then sold the car with a lower spec for £6500.....result !!

New owner - first thing he does is starts buying all the bits again

This time I have done the opposite, bought a modified car at a bargain price and sold some of the go fast bits off it ......but then fell into the trap of buying more go fast bits again. (this time making sure I keep the std bits to refit for selling in the future)

Someone could have made money on this car of Scotys, buying it complete, selling off the juicy bits, then still have a nice MY98 to run around in...............

Hee hee.
This is what i'm saying!

Folks prefer doing their own thing to their cars than accepting someone elses efforts, even if it's..."well sorted".

Andy's car is a prime example.

What a familiar story. I bought my Sti v3 to hill climb 3 1/2 years ago, stock as I wanted to 'DIY' my car (part of the fun).
Big mistake. Cost and time is stupid, and I thought 911's were bad...

But, it's a vicious circle. Once you have the car you are tied to it, and incrementally modify the car, more investment, more depreciation etc, and the car you see for sale needs a big block of £££ and your own car is 'worthless', the money gap too big, so everything stalls, for everyone.

Even when cars are proven (Andy F's) they don't sell.
you have to be in this postion to appreciate it.

I am sure that when all the '400 bhp' bits are off they will fetch a good price as other ongoing threads here show.

Anyway, just the Turbo, Apexi and pump, and injectors to buy now and then I can strip to sell it! (at half material cost)

Makes you wonder...

You're correct Alan, £7k I forgot what the deal on the box was and subtracted it twice !

911 - The bits you are fitting next, hold around 80/90% of their price secondhand and are usually snapped up as soon as they become available.....which is comforting

This worries me!

Im the odd one out as I went looking for a modified car on purpose as I have been caught in the 'buy standard and spend' trap before.

Im lucky that everything I needed was there already (from ECU to Defis and chassis) and all I have done is change the wheels (for the same price I sold the old ones for) and updated the 98 STI bumpers, spoiler and splitter for 2000 STI equivalents. (I only lost about £300, in that deal too!)

In all I think the car has cost me less than a bog standard 2.5 Mondeo I had for two years when the kids were really small

So, in my mind, Ill be buying a modified newage later this year.

Its much better value over two years and tyou get the benefits immediately.

for a start, i think this thread is going a little off topic
now back to the sale of scoty's fine *** motor.....

scoty, my mate said he's advertised in TM
said he sold the car rapids
your car is a minter, its well worth the dough, looks just like mine did.
i too used to only keep cars for 6mths and get rid
i was with my scooby 3yrs+
miss her now.
but own 2 x evo's 4 & 5
and a golf gti which is running 220+bhp & 239 torque

good luck with the sale

steppers

If i was starting out again, i'd prefer to save time, effort and dosh on a car which has some good bits on it, but it's the "caveat emptor", buyer beware syndrome.

I remember over 12 years ago buying a Sapphire Cosworth, claimed to be 400 brake and certainly felt very quick, but in reality was nowhere near it. Naivety played a big part when i bought it, cause i took the vendor at his word but got bitten. After that, i vowed to do it myself, as that is the only way you can guarantee you get a car the way you want it.

Nowadays though, people are more informed because of facilities like the internet and bulletin boards and so there is less chance of being conned by scrupulous sellers.

I think trying to sell a car on here, no matter how good is difficult because the majority are already enthusiasts of the marque and have maybe already modified there own to their tastes.

Think you've hit it on the head there Alan, i know when i tried to sell my Saff on RSowners club bb...it took ages, because, as you say, most people were enthusiasts and owned something similar.

Its a sad day when you have difficulty selling this immaculate car for such a bargain basement price

Guess thats the reason I never have sold my sti5 (400+bhp) as I cant face the loss on the money I put in!!.............. but I, like many others have done it before and will do it again..........

If I didnt already own '2' Subaru Turbo's myself I'd be looking at something like this

Come on folks - what are you waiting for this is a great car.................

Steve
