I work for a hosting company so I know how things work.
on 9 out of 10 dedicated servers, the DNS is controlled on the same physical machine the website is on. especially when the DNS is custom registered for the site. Also as I said in the second past after, by checking the A record would confirm this.

Just to clarify, DNS is rarely run off of the same machine as the webserver, that's bad infrastructure design. Also consider DNS round-robin, if you just check an A record once then you're not getting all the info. A zone transfer is what you need, which most people disallow for good reason. If I wanted to find the IP of a webserver the last thing I'd check is the IP of the DNS server(s), because they're irrelevant.

My only concern about all this is that the site may exist to trap these pedarists and well meaning interference might mean these people escape justice and more children get harmed.

Also I was not refering to large company / corporate style dedicated server, as they would have decdicated DNS / mail / webservers etc to handle different aspects of the site.

Maybe Narco, but you would think that they would take action to arrest these people, and generally convicted pedo's get a jail sentence.

Can't be picky when it comes to IT, it's either right or wrong 
The only reasons for interrogating a DNS server directly is if you're afraid a potential non-authorative answer will be wrong. You can't zone transfer if it's been disabled, and the www host may even be a CNAME as opposed to an A, you won't know until you look

STAY AWAY. Anyone looking at sites involving under age sex are just asking for trouble. If it's foreign nowt can be done by 'mere mortals'. The site is probably run by the police- at least I hope it is. Everyones IP is probably logged, checked and can now expect a visit from the law. Good.
