Since he could well set off the noise meters on the approach which would cause big embarrassment to himself and BA, I doubt very much that he would "gun" the engines just to impress y0ur village!

surely the engines would be under fairly heavy load at that time anyway, as the plane is still climbing..?

Didn't realise a set of afterburners doing what they're supposed to do could cause such excitement. But "like a UFO.."?? I ask you..

Hey pete were back, just to let you know we saw concorde twice while we were away, once in jfk. n.y in June and once in Heathrow in August, also over the flight path where we are, will miss looking up @ 11.00 am, you could tell the time by it.

Jon and Zena.

Andrew 6321

After take off, you have to throttle back initially and fly level at reduced power to avoid setting the noise monitor mics off. When you have got far enough away from populated areas you can then open up and continue the climb. You even have to plan the take off so that you know exactly when to throttle back according to the aircraft overall weight. On the approach it is less of a problem because of reduced power on the descent but you normally do the initial approach at a higher speed which requires less power so less noise. We used to have to be very careful with the RAF VC10's around Heathrow because that is also a noisy aircraft.

Regarding noise monitors. Concorde is exempt, by order of DfT!!
Trust me, I know! ;-) We also have a 1000ft rule, wereby and aircraft should be over 1000ft, 6.5km's from start of roll. Concorde did well if it was over 700ft!!
When I get into the office next week, I wanna check the heights for the takeoffs on Friday. She climbed like an eagle. Guess light fuel load will do that!

Well, a VC10 would make well over 1000 feet by the far end of an average length runway after takeoff with a light fuel load and no pax to worry about. One of the things to look forward to from time to time.

I am very surprised that the Concorde could not make better than 700 feet by 6.5 Km.

The Vulcan could make 3500 feet by halfway down the runway at display weight however. And do a rolling wingover off the top of that. Now that was a real hooligan machine!
