Without wanting to impugne the reputations of any of the cars mentioned in this thread unfairly.

I wouldn't have said that a FIAT Coupe 20VT was the way to go if you're looking to curb costs and retain a wedge of cash. If you look at the FIAT coupe forum there's almost a bravado about how much is spent on maintenance and repairs.

I nearly bought one myself last year but the garage wanted too much IMO.

I dunno how many scoobies are on UK roads but there have to be far more than FIAT coupes. You have to try and figure the likelihood of your car having major problems. A mate used to work in car accessory and had a low opinion of Escorts and Cavaliers 'cos people were always coming in for bit to fix them. There would be though 'cos there's zillions of them on the roads. They're normally cheap to fix because of the volume of the 'spares' industry supporting them.

BTW: If I can find a reasonable 20VT I might still be tempted but maybe only after I get another years NCB on my second car insurance - 50% just isn't enough.

Oh yeah, love FCT's, mate bought one new and lost shed loads on it but what a lovely car, Met Black, I know they are a love or hate it car but I think they are a really distinctive car.

I drove a Standard Terzo and it just wasnt as quick as the FCT but it would have murdered it round corners, not that the FIat was that bad, just the Scoob is that good.

Saxo Boy, glad somebody round here can be relied on to keep both feet firmly in reality, it is difficult to respond when you are bound by actual facts in a sea of BS, keep up the good work !

 

I'll have to look up its times when they are published. I never got the chance to race it but I think I could have taken it (just, would have been close)

 

Cambelt is no longer £1000 job, it can be done for around £350-£500 by a specialist.

BTW- most main dealers still remove the engine. It also isn't the case doing the belt with the engine in-situ is incorrect and likely to lead to failure. Fiat UK issued the dealers with instructions on how to do the belt In-situ just most of them ignore it (probably) cos it takes less time. As I said take it to a specialist and the job WILL be done PROPERLY and will cost half the price of the main dealer.

rear light rust - first I've heard

never heard of any more leaky ones than any other car.

Not as responsive as scoobs and evos, and a long way behind on bumpy lanes but great engines and gearboxes - they are sturdy and once rolling are pretty darn quick on nice roads and will usually equal / beat a scoob.

not sure about the styling myself.

oh yes, and it beat the teg and scoob to first place in the sub 10 grand category of last month's autocar second hand fast car challenge.

Not exactly a ringing endorsement is it!

The cracking manifolds is a design fault also that costs you money..serious money... you'd need that grand and a whole lot more to keep one on the road...

I have also had italian cars 348/328/FIAT Dino Spyder/ 3 Alfas'/ FIAT 124 coupe... I was young and foolish... I will never ever evvvvver own another.

I had mine 2 years. - 1 major item - new clutch. no rust no leaks, no breakdowns etc.

I think you're getting mixed up with the Italian cars of the 80s which were indeed shocking.

Right here we go,

Having sold my STi 7 back in December 2002 I went for a 1997 Fiat Coupe 20V Turbo(needed something much better on fuel!), 4 months later & it is one most emence cars I have ever owned.

I am sooo over the moon with it, and it cost me just £7000 not £25,000 like the STi cost me, and for fun it beats the hell out of the scooby

For just £35.00 I have boosted the power from 220bhp to at least 245bhp by just fitting a PRV (Pressure Relief Valve), and with an exhaust it sounds as good as the STi did with a HKS Zorst on.

Yes it doesnt hold the traction as well and especially in the wet but I def would not go back to a Scooby.

So the point, the Coupe is a very well made and engineered car, it makes me smile everytime I drive it and I dont have to wait til 4,000rpm for the Turbo to kick in

To date I have had not spent one penny on it apart from Performance of course

get off your box and listen to what people who've owned jap and FCT are saying.
People who can talk from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, and I don't mean the personal experience of hearing second hand tales, I mean people who have owned both and are therefore more qualified than you to have an opinion with solid foundations.

You seem unable to take on board any complimentry word about the FCT. Sure some have issues, like some Scoobies on here but by far and away the majority of postings on the coupe site are about the joy the owners get from their cars etc. not how they're stranded and broken.

There are an awful lot more horror stories on this very forum than the Fiat one so get your bedtime stories correct before you start telling them.
Every other post on here is someone gutted with a melted 3rd piston.
Kinda puts the Coupe's problems into perspective. They are usually minor electrical such as a rear wiper switch or some such.
