Cool

PMSL

"I must admit its rather nice to meet fellow owners at Race meetings and other events, rather than Southend seafront and Mcdonalds car park."

Great Quote........Interesting the amount of car envy/negativity on this thread, not what I really expected given some of the great cars folks on this board have had in the past, previously people have been interested in knowing more rather than rubbishing them based on some perception of ownership 'circles' or my cars better than yours.
Possibly a sign of a change of membership of the BBS, although many of the detractors are EVO boys, so its also possibly honeypot thread from the Lancer Board .
It would be interesting to see how much of the 'opinions' are based on actual experience(of modern Porsches, and not one 10 minute test drive) and how much of it is just posturing.

Cheers
Cammy

I was actually talking about Porsche owners here at work in response to old_fart but as you brought up the issue of snobbery I see you own an old 944 Turbo that would just gets you laughed at. Get yourself a new Porsche and maybe your new "friends" won't just keep you around as someone to look down on. Just out of interest what class (as in social class) would you put yourself in? I'll start as I asked the question- I'm working class.

Just a quick edit of my thread and in the time to type a few lines they appear. What started as a thread about someone being impressed by a car(which is what this board is for), degenerates into some type of class war. Fantastic

I see Mycroft(classwarrior) you are from Newbury, sorry to tell you mate but the By-Pass is in, time to leave your hole.....

I agree but I'm afraid the Porsche has a lot of stigma attached to it here in the city. They just aren't cool and are seen as image enhancers used by those in need of image bolstering. They rarely leave the confines of the M25 and are thus little more than trinkets like the £6000 watch the bloke next to me is wearing.

CAMK, You edited because you were joining in... go on admit it... a bit of light relief to tedious thread can be a very welcome diversion.

The UK has a 'class system' and it is so much fun... and Porsche rely on it entirly for their sales so it is fair game in a Porsche thread...

Mycroft.
I don't think they rely on it entirely for their sales. The class system you describe(stockbroker belt ) does not really exist outside of the minds of those who think they inhabit it.
The whole argument that Porsche owners are all chinless wonders is rubbish, the majority of owners are just ordinary folks who have been lucky/successful. Given the acceleration of house prices in the UK(home ownership in UK being highest in Europe), Porsche's are today in more peoples reach in the UK than ever before. This is just further diluting your argument that people who buy one are chinless aristocrat's or Stockmarket types with a bag of Charlie in the door pocket.
I think deep down you are Jealous of Porsche owners, although not man enough to admit it. However you gut twitched when you read this, didn't it......you know and I know the truth.

Cheers
Cammy

You seem a bit touchy about your old 944. All I was saying is that here in the city the Porsche has an ownership profile of snobs/the insecure. These are the type of people who you are likely to see at race meetings in their cars. You said you enjoyed meeting them. Going on the evidence of a quick straw poll I took amongst the Porsche owners here in the office most didn't even know what your car was until I showed them a picture. They then proceeded to sneer at it- one even said "thats a real Del Boy car the kind of car driven by a nasty little oik who wants to delude himself hes got a few bob but fooling nobody". Not my opinion, I actually like the image of the older Porsches because people think they are naff.

You are the one who brought up class and I see from your website that your working class like me. Don't be fooled the other Porsche owners you meet are sneering at you as you can't afford a real one.

Mycroft have you actually EVER driven, been in or owned a Porsche. Please let us know what your superior knowledge is based on. The fact that you class yourself as discerning in your last post is the most pretentious things I've read on here, take a good look at yourself.

I would never own... that would be just too embarrasing.

I have driven them though...

'72 2.4 'S' (the best one)
'73 Carrera 2.7 (close, but too clumsy)
various awful 911s' from the 80's
924 (yeuchh)
928 (OK ish)
928 GTS (awfull and so clumsy)
kremer bodied 911 (best 'modern' 911)
Careera 2 996 tip... sorta OK but rather awkward on fast r'abouts multicambers completely screws that cheap and nasty rear suspension)
959? that 4WD thing... all noise and vibration... my friend paid (I think) a cool 250,000 for this thing and I didn't like it... sadly neither did he...

EDIT.. I have also driven one 924 Turbo... better than I expected... but that ain't saying much... a 944... dull and uninvolving... the 968 cab was actually quite a cool motor nearly as good as I wanted it to be... very good for the summer.

So yeah... I have driven a couple.

Mycroft was the 968 your favourite then? I always fancied one and the negative responses of those in the office to them have convinced me that at least the image must be cool (if they don't like it then it must have some credibility). So would you say a 968 is a decent car? If so which format the cabrio or a more sporting edition-maybe not the CLub Sport a bit too hardcore for me.

Davyboy- as I said earlier in this thread if youd bothered to read it I drive an old Impreza wagon exactly for its anti-image. I had the chance of a 911turbo as bonus and took a smaller cash alternative as none of the cars on offer really appealed to me on image. I don't think your 944turbo is crap, I actually don't really have an opinion on it as I've never driven it. If the Porsche owners here don't like it then it must have something going for it. All they are interested in is posing in their cars, they just don't realise though that they look like total pr1cks driving them through central london.

edited cos I forgot my plus status again and also to reply to davboy

968 was a development of the 944 I'm aware of that Davyboy.

I think you have mistakenly got me down as a Porsche hater. I don't hate them I just hate the image/driver profile they have here in the city. Do you finally understand that now?

Mycroft thanks for the unbiased reply a lot of what you say makes sense although the geordie comments were a bit strong!

Bros... typical Geordie... thin skinned as ever... I apologise for my post and will in future treat you like the tender little wall flower you so obviously are...

(Jeez lads... I thought the geordies were 'rufty-tufty' hard men... this ones a bit 'gay'... be gentle with him... OK, or you'll have me to answer to if you pick on the spotty Geordie wimp!)

If you worked in the same building as me then you'd realise it Davyboy. Maybe out in the provinces Porsches are owned by enthusiasts. Here the guys I know that have them just view it as another trinket to add to their collection of stuff- stupidly expensive watches, blonde girlfriend with empty head/surgically enhanced chest, speed boat (only used 2 or 3 times a year then as low speed platform for champagne drinking), multiple houses demonstrating total lack of taste in style etc etc. The only true enthusiasts in the whole office own a knackered old scooby wagon(me!), an original Lotus 7(he drives it to work!) and a sad boy from currency who has a TVR (hes sad cos its on its 3rd engine mgnt system and it spends more time in Bispham than London).

edited to add: there are 5 porsche owners in my section alone and when I asked them about water/air cooled they didn't have a clue what I meant!

I owned an Evo 6 for almost 2 years before getting the 996. I think I am qualified to judge which car is faster.
How does owning a car make you qualified to judge it? My mother has a faster car than you and she is totally unqualified to comment on it LOL

The performance is just one aspect of the 996 which makes the car a pleasure to own and to drive.
I take it you meant "lack of" performance?

I notice you fail to comment on some of the other characteristics I like about the 996 - steering feel, brakes, throttle response, suspension.
I didnt mean to give you the impression I didnt comment on that. If you go back to my previous message, in fact, I did: I called you a w@nker for saying what you said

Anyway, steering is much much better on the Evo. It's the best steering I have ever experienced, and I have NEVER seen anybody who can drive say otherwise.

Suspension is pretty shïtty for a car of that price, but then again, so is pretty much any suspension on any new road car you buy.

Brakes on the Porsche are the best you get on road car with a sub 100k price tag, agreed. Mind you, that's about the only thing on the car Porsche dont make themselves! hahaha (kidding ... they dont make the seats, plastic and in fact a lot of stuff themselves either, but that old engine is definitely theirs! )

Edited to say I didnt specifically comment on the gearbox, eiher, so here you go: if you find a better gearbox on a standard road car than that of the Evo, let me know.

The Porsche is a great car. Far better in every way I care to measure than a standard Evo. Consider this...if one can afford to spend £90k on a car then one probably isn't concerned soley about value for money vs performance.
At that level of net worth/income comparing 911TT to EVO6 is like comparing Heinz beans to Tesco Value. They both taste like beans, they both make you fart. But you'd rather be spotted removing a Heinz tin from the cupboard than a Tesco Value one ;P
Chuck
PS Of course the Heinz bean eater would be a fool not to try the Value ones, just in case they did actually taste better!
I prefer my 22B to the Evo6 and the standard 996 C2, so there ;P

Why drives you to antagonise people the way you do?
Hi Blow Job. In English, please.

Your quote/unquote style of replying provokes a tennis match battle that nobody but yourself could ever win.
I explained the reason for my quoting previously. I you need the explanation again, please ask

nobody but yourself could ever win.
Not entirely true, although close. Mycroft is here and is trying to get some of the narrow minded illusion-bearing Porsche fans to understand how much Porsches suck, too. And some people agree it's more of a luxury / status symbol thing than a driving machine.

Your biggotry is so blatantly obvious that I'm interested as to why sensible and mature people such as GCollier are bringing themselves down to your level.
I'm not here to pick a fight; I am just trying to clarify some myths that fly about re. Porsches. I totally respect Mr Collier for whatever he may be, but I needed to tell him in a humourous way that his car isnt up to modern standards. The "w@anker" was obviously a joke and no offence intended. Are you sure you understood that? You sound a little short-sighted.

You sound like a jealous brat pulling at every straw you can to make everyone belive that you drive the best car on the planet and nobody's opinion is worth ****.
Again, Blow Job, I'm not jealous. I own several cars and have access to a lot more. I simply believe what I say. Too bad some lesser gifted people like yourself fail to understand that.

Porsche - you'd think they had a good thing there, but thank you Claudius, you've proved us all wrong.
I havent proven much, I am simply discussing cars with a few like-minded car enthusiasts, having a little friendly banter on the way. What's wrong with that?

You've mad me ill reading your posts...
I think you're the one that's jealous, popping in here on page 10 o f the thread just to flame me. You know what, Blow Dog / Job? Blow me! hahaha

Typing errors...

My mind is much faster than my typing, something you don't have to concern your self about obviously.

So, to re-cap, we have advocates for an old faulted design because they think it an Icon.

Others who think it an anachronism.

It is without doubt a triumph of Engineering over design.

To tame the faulty design the car has had to be made soft and heavy, compare the modern car to a '72/'73 2.4 911S/Carrera and you see that in real time the lithe sexy early cars are the finer drivers cars and are likely with a few simple tweaks to brakes to be faster on almost all roads....

Now compare the '72 246 Dino to the 360 Mod. in every aspect the 360 is better than the Dino it is even sexier!... so for almost the same money you can have old re-heated pudding or a fresh and tasty dessert...

Come on guys you are advocating stale bread!

Evo -> Fiat Coupe 20vt -> Fiat Panda

Hey money's tight presently. Hopefully not for long though.

Now if anyone is gonna start saying their Porsche or Evo is better than my Panda then I'll really know you're full of it

by the way. Its a 1.0 FIRE so don't mess if you see me on the road

Oh my christ, someone help me, i'm about to vomit from laughing so much. This is the funniest showing of a bunch of misguided fools deluding themselves i've ever seen. I've been out in the same 996T as ADP, he's our mate, and frankly, i couldn't give a monkeys if someone offered me that Norris EVO7 with 715bhp, or a scoob with 1000bhp, it doesn't matter.
Its still a tarted up jap wagon that'll blow up after 200 miles. My mates 996T has so far averaged about 25mpg too, something that a lot of scooby drivers would struggle to get.
And before you all start fireballing me, i do know what i'm talking about, i'm an automotive engineer. The fact is, the Porsche is simply one of the best engineered vehicles on sale today, and is as driveable as a Ford Ka, yet faster than most other cars on the road.
If someone can seriously give me a proper reason why any sane person would choose a twa**ed up Scoobishievo over a new 996 Turbo, i'll eat my hat.
Rant over.
