I'll dispute this. I've driven an Evo 6, driven a 993 C2, and preferred the steering on the Porsche.
Because it feels heavier?

given the choice of the two, I know where my money would be going.
You know, even if you like the steering better, you're getting ripped off paying the price for a Porsche. It is really nothing more than a grown up Beetle.

The Porsche has this same character but to a much higher degree; the Evo/Imprezas of this world do not. Sure, they're astonishingly fast, and can be made to go even faster for not too much money, but they're still about statistics. The speed gives the thrill, not the car.
You know, I understand steering feedback, gear ratio, lateral g, etc, but what the hell do you mean by "character"?

Put another way, you can drink Port Ellen 25 year old single malt whisky or a cheap nasty Asda blend. One costs £100 per bottle (if you can get it) and the other costs £10 or less. Both whisky, both have just as much alcohol in them, both get you just as drunk. When you're 18 you drink the cheap one on the basis that you can have loads of this for the same price as the other. Sure, it tastes like dog-pee, but hey, it gets you drunk.
I agree totally it's not the destination, it's how you get there that matters. That's actually why I got an Evo.

I wish you well with your Evo, Claudius, but I hope you can understand that some of us want more than just speed (though clearly, we want that too!)
I wish you well with the Audi

I understand some people dont only want the ability but also the comfort, status etc.; I never disputed that. My point was that for the price it costs, a Porsche Turbo is way too slow and to old a design etc. and has comfort and interiour etc. It's not a driving machine, it's a reasonably performing luxury car.

Take care all

Mark ran out of ideas and posted this:-

###The Toyota Soarer is the fastest car in the world and can be tunned to do 16 swquillion miles an hour and pull 5 googleplex G round a bend and no one cares.
One person who drives a Soarer is a **** and is not prepared to let other people have an opinion that doesn't agree with his.###

Awww, bless... and you were doing so well up to then... hahaha

I guess in that case, a Ferrari F360 is even worse than the 996tt, cos it's slower & much more expensive than the Porsche.
It also speaks volumes for Porsche engineers, as they've managed to extract out that amount of performance & safety from a 'fundamentally wrong' design.

Absolutely.

Not at all. They add a turbo to a 3.6 or 3.8l engine and get 25% more power. How is that an achievement??

I dont think the 360 is much more expensive btw. They're about 85 - 90k here in France, both of them.

No, the purchase price maybe the same, but maintenance cost isn't. A Ferrari costs much more to run than a Porsche, servicing & fuel etc.
I don't think u're giving enough credit for the guys in Porsche, they've managed to make a rear engined car that's safe to drive & at the same time able to handle that amount of power.
I do not understand why some ppl hate Porsche, it is a great car in itself, & u're comparing apples & oranges between it & an Evo/STi. Even tho I prefer a Subaru over an Evo, I don't hate Evos.
If u're talking abt value for money, then one man's treasure is another man's trash. Evos are good value for money, & so are Porsches. U just have to compare with the other competitors in the same class & price range. An Evo is not in the same class as a Porsche.
If Porsches are so bad, then there wouldn't be so many professional racing drivers buying them. In fact, there are a lot of Porsche enthusiasts within professional racing drivers circles in Japan. The current Japanese Gr.N saloon car champion is a Porsche enthusiast, & the machine that carried him to victory is an Evo 7.

Absolutely. I meant the purchase price, but you're right

Sure it understeers a lot. You call that safe to drive? With all the weight in the rear?

u're comparing apples & oranges between it & an Evo/STi.
That's what I'm saying: apples to oranges: a cheap performance saloon and a luxury "sports" car.

Evos are good value for money, & so are Porsches. U just have to compare with the other competitors in the same class & price range. An Evo is not in the same class as a Porsche.
I agree Evos are good VFM. Scoobies are even better VFM. A Porsche may be good VFM compared to a 360, but it isnt that great if you take the performance into account.

If Porsches are so bad, then there wouldn't be so many professional racing drivers buying them.
In fact, most of them get them for free.

The current Japanese Gr.N saloon car champion is a Porsche enthusiast, & the machine that carried him to victory is an Evo 7.
See?!

I don't want to throw a spanner in the works here but the ferrari design is about 5 years old... the 911 is now almost 40 years old... it has taken almost 40 years to turn a 'sows ear' into a 'suede lederhosen' (suederhosen? ) so it ain't that great an achievement really... they have had 10+ attempts to get it right... and it is still not good enough...

You guys make me laugh...

Claudius,

Why drives you to antagonise people the way you do? Your quote/unquote style of replying provokes a tennis match battle that nobody but yourself could ever win. Your biggotry is so blatantly obvious that I'm interested as to why sensible and mature people such as GCollier are bringing themselves down to your level.

You sound like a jealous brat pulling at every straw you can to make everyone belive that you drive the best car on the planet and nobody's opinion is worth ****.

Porsche - you'd think they had a good thing there, but thank you Claudius, you've proved us all wrong.

You've mad me ill reading your posts...

Also the Ferrari despite being Italian with all that that implies was right straight away... so that also shows how much of a rip off the 911 is, it costs as much as the Ferrari...

911 = Old tart dressed up in fancy bra and knickers with warts everywhere costing as much to bed as...
360 a svelte Roman ***** with a gorgeous body and revvy as fvck.

Whatever way you look at it the Posche is just a bit of a bag lady.

You guys

I love the fact a 40 year old race car still wins endurance races.

All the other manufacturers must be scratching there heads at that one.........................

Consider this...if one can afford to spend £90k on a car then one probably isn't concerned soley about value for money vs performance.
My point exactly Thank you

No ones been convinced modern Porsches suck, sorry Claudius. Unfortunately the EVO drivers have lapped their local circuit in a bog standard 996 C2 quicker than the MY03STIPPP, so we can't admit that. Howver they creamed both the 996 and the 575 with a boggo EVO8...so the results must be rigged

No, I'm laughing at the horrible truth he stated in a funny way; not sure you would understand that, but hey, you drive a slow ***** extender. I hope it gets you chicks like it's supposed to, that way you could do stuff other than talking about cars. Let's just hope you're better at it than cars LOL

A bit off topic but I don't think Claudius is trying to "get in" with Mycroft at all.

Oh and my comments about the types that tend to choose Porsche's are still valid. Style over substance is what they are about, largely a trinket for rich folk without the taste to choose a car wisely.

I don't think anyone was insulting your car davyboy, after all you can't afford a 911 Turbo or you'd have one.

As for rice rocket this is a rice rocket forum-we like them here.
