It's not beyond imagining that an Evo with £25k of tuning (including suspension/brakes/400bhp) would be faster than an 'out of the showroom' 911 turbo on a track or up to 100mphish. That hardly matters to the guy who spent £100k on the Porsche now does it? He's bought exclusivity and a badge(which means status, sorry but true..my cars are quick but they are Japanese which means nothing in the professional circles i am in...a Boxster gets far more respect than any 'jap crap'). Of course a 911 turbo dosn't cost 3 times as much to build as an Evo, but Porsche control the production and prices very carefully to ensure that the people who can afford one get one, and those who can't don't. I don't have any problem with that..it's the same with clothes, watches, neighborhoods whatever.
Enjoy your car...there;s always someone who has a very valid (to him)reason to think his is better.

I have driven a 996 turbo and I have driven an Evo 6 and an Evo 7. As it was me driving in both instances it takes the driver out of the equation and for ME, the porsche was a LOT quicker.

There I've said it.

I can believe that with a LOT more power the Evo might be quicker, and on some road surfaces it may be quicker.

porkers aint crap their awesome cars, i luv the gt2 and turbo too but compared to a 50 grand evo souped up the porker gt2 and a turbo fails badly big time

I've worked on Porsche's and I've worked on EVO's, Skylines etc.... The Porsche has by far the best build quality, the components are just made to a much higher precision, you can tell the differnce just by the look and feel and weight. My old man has a Porsche RS and it would mash a EVO round the twistys with the right person behind the wheel, granted pretty much anyone can get behind the wheel of an EVO and drive it because it requires little or no skill to push it.

TVR would do well, Tuscan does about 196mph as far as I know.

Both cars are made from re-cycled Tesco bags so don't really warrant serious comparison... WHO WANTS TO DRIVE A POWERFUL WHEELIE-BIN... damned if I do!

Actually you are probably safer in a 30mph crash in the wheelie-bin than in either of those 'joke' cars.

The main question to my mind is the issue of handling. No one has ever bothered to assess the differences between the 996 4WD's and the japanese rally cars. Sure Evo mag said a few words in some of their car of the year write ups but nothing substantive at all.

What is safer to drive fast the rear-engine PSM equiped 911 or a front-engine Impreza or Evo? I suppose it could be rather interesting to see the comprimises each offers.

Ah yes, the pendulous Porsches .... always worthy of much discussion by motoring enthusiasts and not for the first or last time. These cars for some reason have much appeal to those who like to stick their (what's the plural of anus?) out on bends .... Many try this and fail miserably apparently as a visit to any major Car salvage company will amply demonstrate. Sad, but, true ..... Fast, yes no question but ... No thanks .... even if they are the best, which they aint ...

And yes, their origins are indeed a tarted up VW .... it was the 356 IIRC ..... a long time ago now ....

Next time an endurance race is on (and you must watch them as you have worked for the teams) check out how many GT3's there are, and then see how many of them are factory teams.

They have it sussed mate.

Porsche Carrera cup races in Japan, Malaysia, France, UK, Australia, and Germany. And these are all paying customers.

Juan geezer, I don't hang out with those people in real life, just 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday, and I wouldn't do that if the pay wasn't obscene But the fact is a £40k one of 16 limited edition Impreza is about as impressive as a Micra to the average city of London 'professional'

I can confirm old_farts assertion. One of the reasons I drive an old Impreza wagon is for the image-the anti-image!. They all take the p1ss out of me at work for driving a japanese bean can as they like to call it. Personally fashion doesn't bother me in the least. I just like to drive fast, good value, cheap cars and have always got a buzz from doing so.
The boxster is weapon of choice for the less well paid in the city, followed up by various flavours of 911 and sometimes for the real attention seekers a Ferrari.

Any tarted up scoob or Evo will always look tarted up...But a Porsche has a certain classic style.

I also wonder how many people here could drive any of these cars to the cars limit????? Thats the problem with scoobs.etc It makes the owner think they are great drivers. Your not... the car is able to make up the difference.

I would take a 911 turbo anyday over a EVO etc... Its puts you into a different circle in life.And the scooby circle is getting bigger and bigger....

I could have chosen a 911 turbo as a perk last year- I didn't and took a less valuable cash bonus instead. Why? I drove it and thought while fast and in a totally different league to my cars it just wasn't me. The image is wrong and it does put you into "a different circle in life"- a nasty circle as far as I can see populated by the sort of people I wouldnt talk to if I didn't have to for a living.

I have met Porsche owners of all sorts of cars, but I never got the impression they are up themselves. They like fast cars, and can afford a Porsche, does that really make them different from you and I?

I must admit its rather nice to meet fellow owners at Race meetings and other events, rather than Southend seafront and Mcdonalds car park.

I'd have a nice 911 any day but I wouldn't dream of having a boxster. I can honestly say I'd rather have a basic saloon car over one.

I don't mind driving something that people will think is cr@p but I really couldn't drive something that made a lot of people think I live up my own @rse. Stereotypes some people will howl, but over 95% of boxster drivers fit that one. They seem to attract a certain person and it ain't me. They are the type of person who will just leave it blocking the road while they nip in to get their lunchtime snack and stroll out 5 minutes later seemingly oblivious to the trouble they cause but secretly loving the attention.
Sorry to any normal boxster drivers. I just haven't seen any yet.

A nice 911 though or some similar model is a lovely car and I would have no problems looking after one of those :-)

Every country has a class system, every culture too.
Porsche is a great business, they make tonnes of money in all the markets they sell in, and the margin on each car is huge. But they also play realtively fair with their customers. They control production numbers strictly and each model evolution is fairly subtle, thus protecting values. A 2000 Boxster'S' is still trading at £30k here, so 25% depreciation in 3 years is great...market average is 50%. The early 996 didn't do so well, but that's an indication on the entire economy here, and also 'purists' would rather have a late 993 than an early water cooled (*shudder* ), fried egg eyed 996.
I'd have had a Porsche, but I like the 22 too much to sell and I need a 'practical' family four door too. Unfortunately for me practical also means 300bhp, 'interesting'(challenging? LOL) looks and a flat 4 rumble LOL.

I've not seen that more often than other cars(taxis excepted) myself, but its the same as folks on here saying ALL BMW drivers are bad. Its just the way the mind works. You set up an image and your subconscious looks for it every minute you are awake. Every time you see a Boxter you look for a bad thing, if you see something bad(poor parking) it it springs to your consciousness and re-inforces the image, if it is OK and nothing bad it dissapears, all without you ever knowing.
Same thing when you get a new car shape is released, you don't see it for ages then wham you cannot help but see what seems like hundreds of them.

I think you'll find they do indeed rely on it... Ask any dreadful Geordie/Mackem or Scouser who has made 'some money' by selling pies or breeding whippets or whatever it is they do 'up there' to make money. (pimps and prostitution spring to mind, but that might be a 'little' unfair)

The dreadful people who live in the Stockbroker belt who own Porsches are even worse in my opinion... I'd rather talk to a Pie or Custard magnate or Whippet breeder than some twonk with no chin and dreadful pretensions.

Lets get back to Porsches... 'driveway fast' for the few... driven fast by fewer... regarded as a joke by the discerning... harsh but fair.
