Just to hark back a few posts - that thing about "intent to break the law" when speeding, and comparing with manslaughter and murder.

Surely the issue here is that no-one has any respect for the posted limits on motorways etc, and therefore it does not feel like a crime to break them? On a clear day (like over Christmas when there were no lorries about) 90% of drivers, of all car types, go well over 70mph. The average cruising speed seemed to be about 85, and 100 was required to stay in the fast lane.

It's this feeling of "unfairness" that is at the root of all the resentment being stirred up on here at the moment IMHO.

As regards the attitude of officers ,uniforms alter even the strongest of characters ,if you/i were to wear one we would find out that we treated others diferently (not badly ,just different) and would get so much stick that i guess it would make our heads spin. I have every sympathy for the majority of coppers whose image is tarnished by the week character of the minority. Seeing so many criminals/crime has to alter ones attitude even if only(!!) unconciousley. My guess is that they walk a tightropeand are dammed if they do dammed if they dont ( write tickets/stop cars/....)Correct me if i'm wrong but i guess that traffic cops see enough death and grieving families to make them seriously pi$$ed off when they see someone (about whose driving ability and more importantly experience they have no idea)driving like a pillock etc .I've seen many wrecks over the years and if theres one thing i 've learn't it is that IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU/ME. So next time you get stopped bear in mind the above, and that generaly one is treated how one treats others. All IMHO and please feel free to correct me if i am wrong.

Most americans cannot even believe we do not have guns here.
And most of them seem to think it is the best thing they have ever heard of. My ex-girlfriend (US Navy) thought this country was some kind of utopia: She said she felt nervous for a while...(unable to protect our home etc etc) but once she chilled out and realised it was a level playing field she said the thought of going back was "almost frightening".

I know a lot of other Americans have spent some time here, and said how much better it is, and how we do not know how lucky we are.

 

One of the few things I think our police/government has got right is the 'balance' of firearms use. In practise, I think there are far more armed police about than we are led to believe, but only in approrpriate areas/situations. As far as I am concerned, ignorance is bliss in this scenario.

I live in a 'safe' area (I hope ) but I would feel very uncomfortable if an armed bobby came to my door enquiring about a nearby break-in or car theft. Very uncomfortable.

I'd be tempted to get myself a shotgun/big air-gun/crossbow and Christ-knows what might happen then if I saw someone looking at my Scooby in the way that I often have a peek at other nice cars I walk by.

Please keep the police guns locked up (but the chainsaw under the bed helps me sleep )

This medium is far too restrictive to convey the many suptle intonations that are essential for constructive discussion hence misunderstanding after misunderstanding quote and re-quote etc etc ,.T o forgo any pride , vested interest and bias is the first step in the long road to the unenviable position of enlightenment and wisdom that is so desperately needed in this society and hence this thread . Have got to say West York’s Highway Patrol are pretty cool..lol

They once targeted my car at a local meet bypassing other marques. I thought at once here we go!!! They asked how quick the car was and what I had had out of it,
I thought they were trying to be cute and make me confess to saying a speed higher than the national limit, But the gentleman officer quickly added were not asking were you did it just what top speed I had taken it to.
We talked for quite a while about Various topics motor related like old school chums no harrasment or stigma at all. At the end of our conversation they thanked me for my time

Dont get me wrong i have been pulled up and being spoken to like a child with the finger waved at me and drove away thinking police are A@@wipes, But guess theres good ones and not so good ones.

At the end of the day that same police man/women could have just come from the scene of a fatal RTA and lord knows if I could do that let alone talk nice to the next unlucky driver who crossed my path.

Respect were its due erm maybe even to the arrogant ones.


I have found if you talk to the police with respect they normally respond like wise.. Obviously this helps if at first contact they address you similarly..
