mines been ok since Goldens changed the strut, however... I still feel there's some kind of issue with the struts, I personaly don't think the offset is the full remedy... basicaly i know for sure the strut was sticking!
I could push down on the back of the car and the feel the thing sticking as i pushed up and down. When stopping you could feel the car drop a little, and even though its not rattling now i can still often fell the car drop a little.
Pushing the rear of the car down is the real eye opener though, it sticks... i don't think the offset would cause the shock to stick and or move "slump" when stopping...
Could it possibly be a combination of strut orientation not correct and a sticking piston, becouse that exactly what it felt like to me...
Got my fingures crossed now that it doesn't come back!
Surly someone can get one on a ramp and bance up and down on the car and see what exactly is moving other than the piston.!
good luck to you guys who still have it...

Tony,
Thanks for all the quotes. I'll have to concentrate on what mine is actually doing.
Glenn,
I wouldn't say upmarket, but still better than Hanley

what is odd, my rear strut is binding, but my front 2 struts had gone loose

I know that I have a MY97 Sti 3, allbeit with 'standard' STI suspension, but it seems so simple yet so easy to ignore, now i've found it!!
Get it checked just to be sure and if it is a fix then that's great and maybe the robot or joker at the factory needs re-fitting!!
All the best

i wonder if i fitted my rear top mounts wrong
i just asumed it was the springs touching when compressed (progresive lowering etc etc)

*UPDATE*
Today, the knocking noise started again. Big knock noises when pulling up to a junction, and when doing a very slow speed.
Went to my local friendly garage, up on a compression ramp, and the drivers side rear strut is sticking big time.
Not happy.
If the dealer had swapped both like I requested when it went first time, I wouldn't be in this position now.
Clearly Subaru must have a massive problem with this.
Mines booked in for Friday for a rattling clutch to be looked at, so I just called them to say the rear strut is fked. They said they would look at it. No need to look at it, just order me a new one

I hope I'm not tempting fate here, but since I had both rear struts replaced on my MY02 STi by Monty's in Sheffield about 5 weeks ago, I haven't heard a single knock, or felt any rear suspension drops.
I just hope it doesn't come back !

Dealer has now confirmed that the strut needa replacing. They have one on order for me, but can't fit me in for at least 10 days
At least its being done though (they should have replaced it when I had the other side done, in my opinion)...

A while ago I posted some here about noises on my Classic with AST's...
Clunking noise from the rear, maibly when riding over potholes or diagonally off a sidewalk, at low speeds.
I changed last week the antiroll bar (22mm rear adjustable, ), and the noise is gone...
Better look at the bushes for the rear bar, they only cost a few quid and MAY BE a cure for this (not all but it's worth trying..)
Creepy

took my sti uk into goldens for the bolt modification recall, mentioned the clunk clunk noise from the nsr suspension. their immediate answer was to put a new strut on order. this was without any road test to check the problem.
it goes in on wednesday to have the work carried, fingers crossed it will solve the problem

Just had new rear struts on my 03STi due to leaking fluid (found at 20,000 service). Much quieter after replacement although I didn't think it was noisy enough to complain before.
picasso,
Shouldn't both struts be changed in pairs, I would insist.

This thread has been running almost 2 years now
I'm one of the original founders of the knocking suspension by the way, started in April 2002 and sort of still exists to this day

I've got the same problem on my JDM STi8 :-(
The rear right on mine started knocking and got worse - now knocking is less but no damping in the rear and bouncing on the tyres - no fun driving at the moment I can tell you.
Just waiting for dealer to replace the struts - hopefully that will sort it.

If you read through this thread (probably very close to the start), you'll find that I was one of the original knocking suspension gang!
So, three years on, my knocking suspension problem on the MY02 UK STI has gone away for about a month now.
I traded it in for an MY05 UK STI

The rear struts should get replaced over the next couple of weeks so hopefully that will help with the handling.

Well, my fronts both failed last week. Knock/Knock/Knock.
Now out of warranty. So, stuff it, junked it all today and had a nice set of AST Sportline fitted by Powerstation.

No free tools either.
How's the handling? I didn't check the alignment before removing the OE struts so don't know how far out i was to begin with.
The alignment rig (logged No plate) told me you had been there before So I guess it was spot on.
