They can't do anything whatever suspension you have fitted. Anyway, the Prodrive kit has Subarus approval, so tell em to sort it.

LeonB,

Is this Prodrive's view??? E-Mail as per profile if you're happy to explore this a little bit, but note that I'm away for a week from tomorrow.....

I'm sorry, but I just can't believe that a global manufacturer of cars is unable to rectify a problem with knocking suspension.

Maybe if all the sufferers of this problem took their vehicles to their dealers and demanded a courtesy car of similar status whilst the fault was fixed, Subaru might put a bit more emphasis on sorting the car (and customer, perish the thought) out.

At the moment its fob, fob, fob.

Perhaps we should all wait until something breaks and someone gets hurt. Come on, Subaru, sort it out.

Talking

Andy,

If you are not happy with your dealer/IM's response, why not take it above their head and talk to Fuji direct?

Er..... I am reliably informed that letters to FHI come back to IM.......

There's a Scoobynetter who posts under the name of AJBaseBloke who might if asked - or if he sees this post - assist in finding appropriate FHI Contact. I'm going to be unhelpful to the extent of saying that you'll have to research his E-Mail address, as I don't have his authority to give it to you. I will go so far as to draw his attention to this thread, tho'

FWIW, I've concluded that writing to FHI, while it might relieve frustration, on balance is unlikely to achieve the result we both want....

Cheers

I can't see the springs sorting the problem really. It would be nice if someone could find out which part IS causing the noises though.

It's a bit annoying really.

Perhaps if everyone who has the rattle refused to drive their cars on safety grounds and demanded a courtesy car whils IM resolved the problem IM might be a bit keener to sort the issue out properley.

If the dealer says it' not a safety issue, ask him to prove it. As they don't know where the noise is coming from or how to stop it, how do they know it's not a hidden nasty.

Additionally, when you ccome to sell the car, it's hardly a selling point is it?

FAO those still rattling, inc. Andy Gough & Deer Hunter......

My oft-rectified rattle, which was still going like a good 'un until quite recently, has reduced in both volume and frequency (but hasn't disappeared). Coincides with the hot weather???? I wonder??

Any of you noticed the same??

Mine is really rattling, no noise at all before the springs were fitted.

Can any of you guys physically feel the knock ? my whole rear end is shuddering when I drive slowly, the shuddering is getting worse and worse, very unerving to drive fast.

Sparshats say the shims are on back order ?

I feel a phone call to Subaru H.O coming on shortly.

I have to say, I'm really unhappy that there should still be a hard core of STi owners whose rattle has NOT been cured.... not to mention those who've got bored with the whole thing and are no longer posting. For my part, my rattle is still there but, over the last couple of months or so, reduced to a point where I can live with the noise (tho' not the concern implicit in the fact that components in my suspension are clearly not performing to design!!!)

Have we the numbers and interest to kick up a stink, do you think....IM will deny that the problem still exists, since they have managed to cure some - but clearly not all - the afflicted vehicles?

However ...
no noise at all before the springs were fitted
- is your car not completely OEM, B-G???

Mine still banging away. Robinsons reckon they have a 'shim kit' to sort the problem out.

Believe it when I hear it. Every time it goes in there, it comes out with more noises than when it went in.

Is there a supply problem here?? The two of you seem to have promises of "shim kits", and I believe one was fitted to my car when it went to IM in the summer tho, despite promises, I have not been made party to the engineer's report. Have the two of you been agitating to have it fitted??? And if so, have you been asked to await supply (presumably from Japan)???

Mines meant to be going in on tuesday. Incidentally, do all dealers insist on giving Micra's as a 'courtesy' (joke) car?

Phil,

My car is only modified with approved products, except for a Blitz back box.

It was perfectly quiet until the Prodrive springs were fitted, now rattles like a bitch, also the clunking can be felt through the whole car.

Also had terrible tyre wear issues after the springs were fitted, I've had the geometry properly set up now tho, too late for the old tyres tho.

The knocking will be wear in the body of the damper bearings where the insert is supported, normally on the left hand damper as that one is banging in and out of potholes/grids etc.
A quote from Mike Wood, altho on this occasion I think he is probably wrong, I'm not sure he is fully aware of the rattles on some 7's + 8's.

Also my off-side is the rattly shocker, not so much on the near-side.

Mark - I've had more topmounts than you've had hot dinners!!!!

Big Goon. Re PRODRIVE..... a remark to (I think) Mike to the effect of "you have presumably had a substantial number of STi7s through Prodrive, so I imagine one or two of them have exhibited this problem" drew neither confirmation nor denial!!!

I'm on the factory tour on wednesday...........

The tyre wear om my STi since the fitment had been horrendous, i've got a bald NSR 2" edge on the GoodYear with a perfect inner edge.

Has anyone with the lowering springs had the fix done for them yet?

I've been told that there is still a dispute about the fix and the new springs for the 8 and so i'm still stuck with it.

If they did fix it and put the new lowering spring on then surely the car will handle differently as one corner will have new components meant for the 8 and the other 3 corners the original ones for the 7?

Recently I put on a AST coilover suspension, there was also a ratlle in the rear right side, apperantly (told by AST) it is there because the suspension design on a Subaru at the rear is not completely vertical, hence the knocking...
Personally I think it is more something of a slight "play" between the top of the damper and the Subaru top mount.
Will check it out on friday and post the result.

Thanks, Creepy. Rattle is apparently much rarer on 'Classics', which is not to say that your experience may not help the rest of us. Happy Xmas

Phil,

Just "dismantled" the damper and it was not "topmount" related.
It appears to be inside the damper. I took the unit (without spring) and pushed it down, then let it came up and every time it start to come up you can hear a "click".
Proably it's something valve-related wich I can not fix myself.
Up to the factory because I have a 3year warranty....
Bugger, they're closed till 5 jan so I have to hear it on for a few days...

Thanks, Creepy,

Those of us who have the problem still - onSTi7s and (some, but fewer 8s)have all had a variety of topmounts and/or dampers fitted - by definition without final solution. I think I'll be surprised, in your case, if a new damper doesn't fix it.

Happy Christmas

I've finally managed to effect a total cure problem of the rear topmounts annoying me.

I've sold the bloody thing!!!!!!!!!!!!

That wasn't the only reason, the main one being some baddies broke into my house one night and nicked it. We got it back the next morning, but I couldn't take the risk of them coming back for more.

All the 'Home Alone' film tricks would have been nice to do, but the trouble is, this is, unfortunately sometimes, the real world..

I've got a Lotus Elise now. Use that for robberies you *****.

And by the way folks, don't knock one until youv'e driven one.

A pal of mine runs the race skool at Castle Combe. He has 18 month old scoobies and 3 18 month old elises.

Scoobies as we all know use brakes and tyres like they are free - the Elises have just had their 1st set of tyres and pads, having done identical miles.

And trust me on this one as well, they grip like, well, a scooby.

Even old ladies smile when they see you.
