Still planning on going. Might bring the video camera. Anyone got one of them in car mount thingies - are they any good with camera shake?

 

Wilf, I think you mean the suction mounts sold by B. Hague - I've got one, and chrisgarner also has one - I believe he may be coming with us. They are pretty good, with the proviso that if like me you have one of the more bulky models of camcorder you may find there are only limited places where you can position it. Chris must have a smaller model, because he can hang it off the front windscreen - my camcorder's too big to fit there.

If you think about what we see on TV motorsport, the ideal filming location is probably behind the driver's left ear in a RHD car(i.e. central in the car) but I haven't worked out how to achieve anything like that with a suction mount yet. Best I've managed so far is to strap a mirror onto the forward face of the front passenger seat back, and attach the suction mount to that. Otherwise it has to be a side window, which is too far off the centreline of the vehicle to yield a good camera angle.

Then there's the outside of the vehicle - in dry weather, and if you have a smaller camcorder! Mine is on the weight limit for my suction mount, and Hague's advised me not to mount it externally - but it would open up lots more possibilities.

My results are still in the 'experimental' stage, so you shouldn't rely on them too much!

Ian (sue) sorry to hear that you can't make it...yes it was my ugly mug on at the end...not sure if the X5 will be there as it had a volvo in boot incident on the M4 recently...basically a guy in a T5 decided that just becuse the X5 was stopped in the outside lane behind the queue of traffic in front that was no reason for him to apply his breaks!!! So if if it is back from the garage yes..if not it will be a scooby day out with a re-match early in the new year...
