Sorry for no replies recently, I've been away for a few days.
Tony: There is no difference between the interface apart from the plug. AFAIK, there are both types of connector on an MY98 but I have only ever connected to the OBD one as it is so easily accessibly.
Paul: As it stands my code does 'block' reads to get parameters so that would need changing for the early cars, I think some restructuring of the code will be required due to performance issues.
I am currently trying to put together prices for different options, PCBs, kits and fully built units, as well as adapting the unit to different MYs, as this is all done in my spare time I would ask everyone to be patient, I will post more information as and when I get it. In the meantime I continue to be somewhat overwhelemed by the interest in my little gadget and am still willing to listen to peoples ideas and suggestions.
Cheers,
Andrew...

Andrew - A head up display version?
Have just got a laptop running some Delphi code connected to my MY96, and so it reads individual parameters. Will get it to read multiple parameters tonight I hope.
I have just acquired an Atmel demoboard for another project, so I was going to learn how to code microcontrollers (currently in assembler) to produce a stand alone version, but you look like you have done the work already...
How do you rate the Basom AVR development package? I think it may be easier than assembler!

Dnb,
I'm not sure about the heads up display version, my original idea was something fairly cheap and cheerful with the emphasis being on displaying the data the driver (or passengers) wanted to see with less emphasis on flashy displays, packaging etc.
I rate Bascom-AVR very highly, which is why I am using it

I have been busy with my fulltime job and revising for some financial exams (why do I take so much on), I have also had some family problems, all of which has meant that the progress of the monitor has slowed down dramatically.
I do intend to keep this as open as possible and will get back to it asap.
I have kept the address of everyone who has emailed me and will contact you when I have something available.
Cheers,
Andrew...

Andrew, no worries m8.
Things seemed to dry up with no one else showing any more interest (from the postings anyway), so thought I'd get it back to the top of the forum.
Cheers for now,
Stefan

Things are still happening. I am more interested in pre 97s (that's what I have) and will most likely be helping out a bit with making something work for that. Like Andrew, my time is a bit limited, as I have a lot on.
BTW I have a PC program that will read pre97 parameters now. There are still a couple of bugs, but not serious ones
All it requires to run is a laptop (obviously) and a level converter IC (Max 232 etc.) for the RS232.
How is the yellow connector group buy proceeding? Work can't get any for me

dnb,
I would be interested in your program for running on a laptop & would be prepared to pay for a copy. What exactly do you need to connect to RS232? I have a MY95 UK wagon.
Gaz.

Cheers

cononcars,
A schematic for the hardware can be found here. It's a PDF file.
This is required to convert the 5V signal from the ECU to RS232 so the laptop can understand what is going on.
The parts list is quite small. You can get all the bits from Maplin (apart from the ECU connector mating half - so I use wirewrap pins or paperclips...), The Max232CPE chip maplin sell requires bigger capacitors (1uF) instead of the 0.1 uF on the diagram.
I'll let you know about the software when I get it into a bit better state. There are a few things that need tidying up. It shouldn't take that long.
Email me (address is in my profile) if you want some more info.

Nick,
Sorry, ISP does not seem to be able to keep a Web server running for more than 10 minutes per day!
I am working on the MY99/00 versions at the moment.

dnb,
I would be interested in anythin you have for on-the-fly monitoring of the Pre97 ECU.
I have a very basic development version written in Labview, but have not had time to look at it any further or aquire any more of the address locations (has anyone got a logger to record DET Yet ?).
My effort has been conentrated on getting these Pre97 ECU adaptors, Maps and sockets sorted, along with downloading maps from ECU's I get for upgrade.
I havn't heard anything on the yellow connector front, as am still using paper clips.

ScoobyDuck - how's your software going? If you find out anything about knock, let me know please. I don't think I've even worked out the address yet
You can have a look at my software if you like, however it's far from right. (and is currently only set up for the pre97 engines, so if you have a parameter list to share...)

Scott - will do when I get home, as long as you let me have a copy of the combined list when you're done.
Unfortunately, they like me to do work stuff while I'm at work
I think they are just being mean.

Just a thought - there seems to be several people working on cracking this technology, as well as people like myself, with computer/coding/assembler knowledge who'd like to contribute and play with it as well.
How about setting up a YahooGroup, say "ScoobyBlackBox", where people could register, and post up their findings, enquires, offers of help etc etc. We could upload files, pictures etc etc as well.
I can volunteer to do this, if people would use it. Yes/No ?

Right, tis done. I've invited the "relevant" people in this thread to join, if we can have them all in, that would be great.
Membership is currently by invitation, at the moment. Depending on the response, and the opinion of those who have contributed more to the effort, I might change it to be open.
Use it or lose it, I say.
