I think comparing scoobs to porkers is a waste of time and fools gold.
There is a reason porsches cost what they do and have the respect they do as they have been doing it right for years (well apart from where the engine is)
A friend has a 911 RUF CTR and I know no road car that will touch it. Maybe ronnies R33 but that would be close. When I went out in it:
690 BHP at 1.2 BAR!! it weighs 1050 KGS as has carbon panels and it is mapped to 1.4 bar. It was frigtheningly fast, it has 3.6 litres it would crush any evo, scoob, skyline that you throw at it. a masterpiece opf engineering and reliability as well. It goes aroudn the ring all day, crucifying everything in sight!

To back up my respect for porsches and the turbos I went onto the rollers reently at GFORCE to run the skyline. GForce are porsche legends and based in Aylesbury FYI, they run racing teams in the cup and national races, plus Le mans so they know their stuff. New superb 4 wheel drive rolling road set up and they have a nearly 900 BHP racing posrche on there!! strewth. (no not on the payroll just very impressed)

OK I had my run, nearly 490 BHP at 1.2 bar and well chuffed. Chris, the tech dir says ok take a look at this porsche turbo with stage 1 tune on it, the new 996 model and it looked standard apart from the exhausts.
Man this thing was on full boost at 2500 rpm with a flat and solid curve right through the rev range on the dyno sheet. At every 1k rev point up until 5500 rpm it was putting down 100 more BHP than the GTR. It was only making say another 10-15 BHP at peak power than mine BUT IT WAS THE WAY IT WAS DELIVERED...STAGGERING.
On the road that equates to being pissed on basically...and yeah they do have superb 4wd drive systems to put this down on as they are 100k cars new in case you throw in the old scoob traction point. I was amazed at this and now I understand that so much money and engineering has gone in to making these superbly quick, well built and superb sports cars.
So next time you think about racing a turbo...forget it. you will lose. And as for the GT2....460 BHP out of the box. Nice touch.

Just my 2c and oohhh for a 996 turbo...

Good points NLW, but
1) I did try and I didn't "lose" until we were doing around 90mph.
2) our other 4 friends that were following in their BMWs (or trying to!) ripped the pi$$ out of the Porsche guy saying "I think I'll save myself £50,000 and go for the Scoob thanks very much", banter I know but a point none the less.

However, these Porsches must be amazing if they can produce a flat curve....

All this posturing doesn't make for a very objective argument though.

Errrrrrr Mellow has made an allegation about his RA being faster than my Sierra down the straight at Croft. One thing Chris failed to mention was that it was pi$$ing down all day!

To try and put 416lbs/ft through the back wheels is nigh on impossible!! I had to short shift into third, make call, scratch my bum as I waited for the boost to arrive.

No wonder he pulled ahead, but funny how I closed on him but that doesn't count does it Chris?

By the sounds of it it was not a turbo you were up against and it if was an older version. even the 993 version have 410 bhp out of the box, they weigh 1480 KGs so not a great deal heavier that the Sti. And if you are a "well built chappie" like me then that adds weight as well.
A new 996 T4 will absolutely cream any scooby, evo or skyline in a decent state of tune with the 996 at std or a set of pipes.
They are amazing bits of kit, they boost hard, quickly and efficiently.
I think we should all take a chill pill and realise that they are superior machines in EVERY department.
I think the money argument is pointless as if i had that sort of dosh I would get a turbo anyway. Why would you want a jap mobile regardless of 50k? I love the turbos and always give respect where it is due.
Get a lot more smoot in a turbo as well! ;-)

NLW.

You probably didn't read my earlier posts on this thread.
My friends car is a brand new 996 Turbo. Yes he is heavier than me (although not a complete biffer) and no he isn't still running it in.

ok so you "kept" up to 90. big deal. He probably was not even tickling the bugger and besides who wants to play hoolgian at roundabouts on our good queens highways. 90k is a lot to stick in the barrier. After 90 I bet you went backwards and fast.
Get that thing on the track and it would be later allig8a.
Come on guys you only have 4 pot wheezy 2 litres. There are faster cars than scoobys out there...believe it or not!!
Mine has a nice 2.8 stroked straight 6 twin blown. Very easy to get 500 BHP out of it. Those things are 3.6 6 twin blown, state of the art and run 0.6 bar std. run them up to 1 bar and you have 520 BHP. Ouch!!
Good luck racing them and I look forward to hearing about some great porsche 996 turbo kills....NOT.

NLW - straight six and lovin it.

Your still missing the point.
This was a deliberate test of the 2 cars, we went for it on the given signal and were both gunning it hard (you obviously still haven't read my earlier post).
I did also say that he leapt substantially (and impressively I might add) past past me at 90.
I am not trying to claim a scalp, I'm just answering the original question.
Yes there are faster cars than the Scooby but that wasn't the question either was it. I was as surprised as anyone that my car kept up as well as it did but that's the fact of the matter.
If you don't believe me I couldn't give a hoot and if you don't like what you read in this thread then don't open it up.....

Incidentally, I never once said that this test happened on the queen's highway.....

My car is not about style who cares leave that for the ******* its about performance neither of which are possessed by a porsche boxster and audi TT. LOL at them and there wannabe owners they have a far worst image than my sierra.
The sierra cosworth has a much better image than a scooby so I dont know why you keep on on that note . Look at there styling and performance. as has allready been said weep in the knowledge that you have the very worst 2.0 litre turbo car. Laugh at you all and your jealousy.
Remember an RS500 is worth as much as a nearly NEW Porsche Boxster or Audi TT or is it skoda. Strange for a car with such a bad image LOL.

Neil I read your post as:
"Anyway, if anyone's still interested in an objective comparison, my mates got a 996 S3 (or is S2?; it's the one below the GT2 apparently which he said was no good for him as it doesn't have back seats for his kid or something) and we decided to go head to head....

S2 is not a turbo nor is it 4 wheel drive. It is 2 wheel drive, normal asp 3.6 non turbo with 320 bhp. so yes you would have kept up to him to a point and then bye bye. A valiant effort none the less...
So no I don't believe your car would keep up with a turbo as it would not stand a chance. I would struggle to see one off in the skyline (with 480 BHP) As for a Gt2 mate then forget it...460 out of the box, lightweight, huge carbon brakes with 6 pots, one ran a 188mph at ten of the best and not a scooby in sight.

As I said the Turbos are in a diff league. I did read a comparison between the latest Sti and the NON turbo porker and not much in it...apart from Price, style and panache.
Stuttgarts best had lots more of it all!

As I said before...try and race a "turbo" and you will be lunched.

8:35 for the STI I think, but not sure if that's 20.8km or less (ie from bridge to bridge)

And you will also notice that I was unsure about the actual model of the car hence I mention the GT2 (which is a Turbo?).
Anyway, it's a new Porsche turbo "something".....

The 455bhp GT2 runs at 2 bar. Not sure which car you're referring to.

it's the one below the GT2 apparently
It depends on your definition of "below". The GT3 (320bhp) is normally aspirated, whereas the plain 996 Turbo puts out circa 410bhp.

I am lucky enough to own a 996 turbo and without a doubt it is the most composed rocket ship i have ever driven. Its fine saying you have upped your ponies to something ridiculous but if the car hasnt been conceived to handle that sort of power from day one you are driving a compromise. A standard production 996tt is absolutely awesome on the road, period. It will eat all but the most tuned scobbies. Thats not an insult to scoobies just that you cant really compare the two cars. On the other hand a cossie can be compared to my garden shed which i added wheels to last weekend.

I would have to agree with NLW33. A well modded Subaru can keep up with a normal 911. I managed to just about pull ahead on a 911 4S in my Type R which is pretty good considering it costs £60K but I reckon the Porsche would have still had the legs at higher speed. The 911 Turbo's however are in a different league especially the GT2. Race one and you will get thumped. With around 450bhp from a 3.6 litre engine, astronomical torque figures and the best brakes in the business, let's be realsitic here.

So 911's - maybe (depending on state of tune of the Scooby)

911 Turbo's or any of the Porsche GT's - Forget it

It's not for nothing that they held (and may still hold) the production car lap record at the ring.

NLw,
I believe we established that your friend had a 996 c2. 2 wheel drive naturally aspirated engine with output from 300 to 314 hp depending on year.

Coo heck Mr Brown, you haven't got one of them as well have you?

(Grumble, grumble, bloody lottery number never came up)

From my experience

Boxster - Scoob much faster
Most Old 911's (including Turbos)- About equally tipping to the scoob although a 964 turbo might worry a few scoobs
993 NA - doubtful unless STi
993 Turbo/GT2 - not a chance
996 NA - doubtful unless STi
996 Turbo/GT2/GT3 - not a chance
