DIY ECU remap project....

Karman is just one type of MAF, and yes, the Karman does work on frequency. The other 2 common types are the hotwire, and vane.
WRXs are the hotwire type.
Here, check out this link for a good explanation of the 3 types
http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h34.pdf
There is a test to do at the end of this document, I expect you all to get 100%, OK
Cheers

nothing specific has been said, other than "reorganisation proposal"
I was looking at my options anyway, and this may in fact be much easier, especially as i have been working here for nearly 2 years and have a 3 month notice period.

humm.. bit of a bright spark our Paul !!
'reorganisation' humm .. those words sound so familiar ... having the same here ... getting rid of loads of little sections and making one huge big messy dis-organised one!

it means there are 12 of us in my department, and 3-4 will have to go (12-14 out of 35 in total).
They are asking for voluntary, and will make up the numbers with compulsary.
I wouldn't fancy my chances waiting for the chop, so why not avoid the wait?
Besides, I was looking at my options prior to this.

Labview is not my greatest skill, as you may have noticed!
I suppose i would be better if I was doing it every day.
Raytheon are just round the corner, as you well know!
Well, I wanted some time off.

Just downloaded a map from a 95WRX as I was due to fit an adaptor this morning.
However, downloading the Boost profile showed that it was running 16.5 psi which is about 5 psi above standard.
Further investigation found the fuel-cut set at 19.5psi (too high in my opinion) and the speed limiter set to 200mph.
Hmmm, time to crack open the ECU I think.....
What did we find ?
Well it was already fitted with an ECU adaptor labelled PROVA 02. Further investigation found that this is actually a Japanese Tuning firm.
Well at least I got a nice map out of it, although it is very similar to the Prodrive Map we already have, but with higher Boost limits, which makes it more like the Stage 2 version both myself and Chris are running.
It's been a very interesting morning, and hopefully I will be able to post a piccie of said item one photo's have been taken.
P.S The Soldering was a bit dodge tho'

Hi Scott,
19.5PSI is what the Prodrive 99/00 ECU had as boost limit for a midrange boost of 16-16.5 PSI. May/may not be a coincidence. Just though it may be of interest.
Cheers

This map was in a 95WRX and is very close to the Pre96 UK Prodrive Map (i.e you can tell they were from the same origin).
I think the 99/00 Map may just be coincidence.
I also think/know that a standard 95 Map sensor can't give a voltage high enough to represent 19.5psi, hence my concern.
And yes it did have a standard Map sensor fitted as this was one of my first checks after seeing such high levels.
cheers anyway...

I'm not sure on the pressure range on the older cars, though 99/00 sensors can read way over 20 PSI. Interestingly, the diagnostic value returned (at least on 99/00 cars) for boost pressure max's out at 18.4 PSI. However, this is not the limit of the sensor, only the limit of its representation to the outside world. This may or may not apply to what you are doing - depends on how you are finding this boost reading limit.

Scott,
If the YHM was for me - mail not received - chris.palmer@mailcity.com
PS - been analysing the differences between ignition maps - UK - WRX - PPP - JUN - All seem fairly similar except the Jun MAP?
Whats your thoughts on this - improvement or not - whats the new map like - similar to wrx & PPP I'd guess?
Cheers,
Chris
PS - Looking for a couple of last minute super tweaks - Really want to break 270bhp 250lbs/ft torque barriers.
Next RR Session Oct 5th - Nobles Midlands.
Oct 6th My First run down the Pod - Say goodbye to Mr Clutch.
If would be cool if some of the Southern Maaasssiiivvvee Could make it

Chris,
The WRX map that I downloaded from a 94WRX a few weeks back looked more like the JUN map.
I think the JUN Map was evolved from a WRX Map
The standard UK Map, PPP Map and the Prova Map are all very similar, in fact the Prova Boost map is the same other than the last 3 columns and the ignition map is very very similar. The only Map on the Prova version that is radically different is the Boost Control Solenoid Duty Cycle.
The WRX map we got from PE looks identicle to the UK map in most area's so I am still a bit concerned about it's true origin.
Also another WRX map I have which came via David looks like a hacked WRX/JUN map.
I'll email Prova from work tommorrow.
