Cool

blimey - and what a lot of posts.

Mike - Im seriously impressed with the massive quantity of materials posted by yourself! Ive always like Cossies too - just a shame about the image associated with the drivers...sounds like yours is pretty damn fast though

If I'd managed to read this last week sometime I might have turned up - however I shall wait for the next one.

Seeing as my scoob is my least powerful motor by far though I dont think I'll be bringing that one along..............

we now have 624bhp and a REALLY BIG intake on the roof....

Wow, four pages of posts. ;-)

I wouldn't be too hard on the old Cossies, the Scooby is going to be the Cossie of the 90's just like the Saxo is going to be the XR2 of the 90's.

Think about it.

Just my humble opinion.

Cheers

Just the night before I had stuffed a 911 Carrera up to 80 and on the abs for the next set of lights. And so Sunday morning I awoke with a good feeling about the day. I left home from Leicester at 08.30 with partner and made good time to the Mc D's at Wellingborough. We arrived at 09.30 to find just the one Impreza in the car park, a strange reflective aura coming from its cockpit. To my horror I realised it belonged to the hooligan known as Stef. Inside Stef the vegan could be seen eating the cadavers from some poor beast! After a quick drive around in search of petrol and a VHS-C tape we were off to Santa Pod. We made a spirited (but safe) drive across country to the Pod. On arrival we were showered with muddy water from and on coming Landrover, Bastich! Off we went to the cafe, Stef introduced me to everyone, good to meet you everyone. At this point I realised I had left my licence at home, Bastich! A real star came to the rescue though. It was now 11.30, I had seen a Black Supra and Mike retire. Genuinely sorry to see that Mike. Being my first time a Santa Pod I lined up with a Dragster. It proceeded to do 11.308 :0 my day had to get better. The rest of the day I spent trying to run against the Cosworth crew.

1 13.982/96.00mph > 11.308/117.84mph
Dragster BHP Unknown

2 13.929/95.72mph > 13.883/105.61mph
Black RWD sapphire cosworth BHP Unknown

3 13.782/96.62mph > 14.142/96.78mph
Escort cosworth BHP Quoted 275

4 13.873/95.38mph > 13.661/101.64mph
Escort cosworth BHP Quoted 335

5 14.225/95.93mph > 15.037/89.41mph
Nissan Sunny GTI-R BHP Quoted 278

My best 60ft was 1.856
My best 330ft was 5.548
My best 1/8 was 8.808
My best 1/4 was 13.782

The day showed a few interesting things although I only did a few runs. Off the mark is a good place to make up some ground on the more powerful cars. Do not underestimate a Cosworth you never know. 0-60 times are an outdated way of measuring a cars performace, although it would have been nice to have had that one under the belt against the Cosworths. And to a less degree so is the 1/4 mile, although my times with the Cosworths were close the speeds were not, If we had both gone for it at 70mph the more powerful cars would have easily pulled away. I know people talk about the Imprezas cross country ability but IMHO I do feel that such cars would keep up even if their corner speeds were lower. I think the point with the Impreza is that it can be driven hard every day, all day without the worry of mechanical faliure. I spoke with alot of people that day and detected no ill feeling from anyone. I had a great day, and want more power And I want to go again, come on Mike yer Bastich I'll take yer down any day

Dear Mr Leigh,
You posted some very respectable times for an old smoker of a Scooby! However, you will have a long way to go to get near my car:
Reaction time: 0.994
60ft time: 2.164
330ft time: 5.609
First 1/8 ET: 8.361
First 1/8 Speed: 92.12
Second 1/8 ET: 4.279
1/4 ET: 12.640
1/4 Terminal: 115.96
(with timing slip to prove, along with just under 30 other high 12s runs!). This was with "only" 385bhp, but the torque peaked at a more transmission friendly 4000 revs instead of 3500 that it does now (where it has too much every where!).

As you can see 4wd is unbeatable off the line and then the power is sapped away by the transmission and 2wd takes over (what you really need is a skyline that only weighs 1300kg!)

See you at the next one!
Best regards
Mike

Hi all!
Another good day on Sunday. I managed 12 runs in all, and my clutch feels fine!!
As far as my car being so much quicker is concerned, I don't think it is. There were two other UK cars there, albeit MY99's, that also ran under 14 secs.
There is no doubt that the most important part of a 1/4 mile is the take off. Once you're up and running, it's purely down to smooth but fast geatr changes and the power of the car.
When I ran against Mark's STi, I mauled (love that word! ) him off the line, only for him to reel me back in at the halfway point, which with 320 bhp was always going to happen no matter how well I drove. I just seem to be quick off the mark. I get to 60' very quickly (1.7 secs!) but there's only so much power available which won't ever hold off STi's or 350bhp+ Cossies once the cars are rolling. Noboby managed to get anywhere near me off the line, and only Mark managed to stuff me (well done BTW!), which I've got no problem with .
I wonder what would happen if my car ever went the PE/Unichip route?
Hmmmmmmmmm.........................
Anyway, nice to see a good turn out.
Oh, and Mike, if you score using total victories against each other, rather than simply the fastest time, it's actually Scoobies 2 - Cossies 0!!!!!!

Stef.

Mike,

bearing "Reaction time: 0.994" in mind, if I was you the next upgrade I would do would be to get someone else to drive

Stef, once I can make it to the pod can I borrow your "light change crystal ball!?"

Im just glad reaction time, has no bearing on the actual 1/4 mile time.Boy would I be in trouble !!!.

Steff, I suspect the STi gearing, means changing to 2nd, around the 60' mark.I was quicker to 60' in your car (not as quick as you)than my own.You also went over 2sec's in mine ???.Have to check that next time.

Well now I'm looking forward to Donington, where I'm sure that you'll be looking for revenge, and 'sideways Steff' you'll probably get it !!!.

is there a meet at donnington soon?
i have just got a impreza sport as a company car but my own car is a proper 350BHP 2wd saphire cossie.
I have done donnington 4 times this year, lapping in 1 min 28 sec on the national track on road yokohama a520's.
I could kill all the impreza's running on road tyres and any down the straights and craner.
i was there on sunday with my mates esprit V8 gt car and we lapped in 1 min 16 seconds on slicks.

Donington is booked on the 20th November

Unfortunately I believe it is fully booked with a length reserve list

I think the Imprezas (UK spec) were lapping in about 1:31 at the last event. I'm not surprised that a 350 RWD Cosworth can lap faster, as it can put all of its power to good advantage We had a 412bhp 3 door Cosworth at our track event at Knockhill, and it was very fast in a straight line (once the wheels stopped spinning )

Dear Robski,
At last we see a sense of humour developing (git!)! I must confess that my reaction times can usually be measured on a sun-dial. However, that was a PARTICULARLY bad one I must admit!

Dear All,
If I can persuade the girlfriend, I might try and make Donnington (praying for a Scooby to go bang - but please NO crashes!), and if the cossie is not ready, I might have to bring the "toy" along.....
See you all soon.

REAR WHEEL DRIVE RULES OKAY!

John.

At approx what speed do you take Craner?
1 min 28 secs is quick, but then with 350bhp it should be. 240bhp Imprezas can do it in about 1 min 31 secs. I don't think you could class a 3 sec advantage as 'killing'!
As for a 350 bhp Scoob', well that's a different story altogehter.
1 min 18 secs in a Lotus must have been quite a ride!!!

B*****KS!
I thought 1.33 was quite good. Shows what happens when theres no "competition" on the track (EVO's aren't, obviously!)
I'm gonna blame that on my bushes disappearing somewhere.
Sounds like a good excuse to me!
Glad I won't be at Donington now.
Oh the humiliation!!!

i am not sure what speed i took craner as i was busy with looking where i was going. I think it was about 120MPH just before braking into the old hairpin on a fast lap.
I was hitting 135MPH at the braking point on the back straight into the final chicane onto the pit straight.
The bigest problem i have is after 1 lap the tyres go off as they are too soft for the track. My fastest times come after about 2 laps as i dont push on the first lap to allow the oil etc up to temperature.
I was at the RS owners club day at silverstone this year and was hitting 148MPH down the hanger straight, i also was hitting 135MPH into copse, which is faster than it looks. There was a 22B at silverstone that was dog slow, however it was the driver, not the car at fault there. To show how much quicker 2WD is on a straight than 4WD i was leaving a 420BHP escort cossie down hanger straight but he caught me through the complex, i would then leave him down the pit straight and upto beckets, we would be even through there then i would pull away down hanger again.
The lotus i was refering to is a space frame GT car i built from F1/F3000 parts, it has 400BHP and weighs just 720Kg.
Mark Hales drove it for CCC magazine a couple of years ago and said it was one of the best balanced cars he had ever driven.

Dear John,
All I can say is "YOU LUCKY B'STARD!". I remember the car well, and thought how much better it could have been if Lotus had given the engine a bit more thought, as 400bhp out of a 3.5 litre twin turbo isn't exactly pushing the boundries of engine technology -the new 360 Modena makes that normally aspirated.....

You will find that on the road your 350bhp Cossie will kill a road going Esprit V8, as they have the same bhp and considerably less torque (ONLY 295 lb ft!) but weigh almost 300kg more than a Sapphire!

Anyway, as I keep saying to these Scooby boys, rwd Cossies RULE! (well 350bhp plus ones do anyway!)

Eat OUR dust Scooby boys!

Dear John,
Should be the Easter week - so would love to come along. Please try and arrange it for then, as I cannot change my holiday (not sure of the dates yet, but will be the Easter shut-down period).

Although I will have the same problem as guy with 412bhp Three-door - will have to put some slicks on (unless it is raining as usual!).

See you there!

Hi Guys,

I've been enjoying the banter, but Mike, I have to ask...

When you are pulling, erm, 150MPH+, how the hell could you tell what mods had been done to the FireBlade?

If this shows me up as biking novice, then, yep, that's me! Since I've had Sky Digital, I'm a big Foggy fan though.

When's the next run at Santa Pod?

Cheers,

Chris.

i'll get back to you on the issue number. The wildcat relates to the engine we are using. designed by ian richardson of wildcat engineering. It was the first prototype of his new cyclinder head casting for the rover V8. This head has gone on to produce 450BHP on carbs. It was fitted to a car in the FIA GT championship , the blue morgan. It has also been used by janspeed to go into the MGF land speed record car with twin turbo's producing 947 BHP.Ian built the engines for JW Automotive(john wyre) in the GT40's that won Le Mans with Jacky Ickx. He then went racing himself with a Mclaren M6A canam car and then built and raced the quickest Cobra's in UK racing. He held lap records all over the UK and probably his wildest creation was a corvaire GT car which was a Mclaren M8F canam car under the skin.
His last race car was the Mirage DFV that raced at sebring against the ferrari and alfa world sports cars.

Mike,

Is your middlename Teflon by any chance?

I'm thoroughly impressed by the way you brush off the flak and keep comming back for more!! I'm staying out of the "my car's better than your car" until I get my Supra sorted and come along to some events. After all, actions speak louder than words.

In the case of Nightmare's car, which I believe is a Diablo all I will say is rather you than me mate.....

Can someone please justify why Subaru have released so many different version of the Imprezza?? The only reason I can see, in my highly biased view naturally, is so they can make money off muppets that just want the latest model.
What's the next one I wonder? The Imprezza WRX-Terzo-STi74-22ABCD&E-P1,2,3&4??. Ohh ohh gotta get this one it's got a different gear *** and wheels....

In summary real men don't eat quiche and they certainly DON'T drive 4WD cars!!!

Nick

P.S. Say anything nasty and I'll tell my mum.

Dear Chris B,
While we pulled along side each other at 135, I noticed the carbon rear can and most people (with any sense) then have the bike set up properly to glean the best out of the de-restricting effect this has. This normally means dyno-jet kit and K&N filter to match, plus setting up on a rolling road. This normally only gives 3-4bhp gain, but smooths out the power / torque curve. I assumed all this from the end-can and then when we got to Snetterton had a chat with him and he confirmed everything that I had already guessed at.... Where-upon he couldn't believe the car was just Stage 1 chipped!

Dear Nightmare,
If you have a Diablo (and providing it is not one of the stripped out race versions), then I would advise that I have a better power to weight ratio than even you (a smidge under 350bhp per ton for me), so providing we don't find any roads where you can exceed 188 (and we are rolling, as 215 tyres can't grip in 1st and 2nd), then I'll cane your **** lardy boy, as you weigh nearly half a ton more and only have 72bhp extra - less than 300bhp per ton (or 100bhp if it is an SE, which even then, is only just over 330bhp per ton!).

No competition - you'll need a souped up Caterham, F40, Marcos, TVR Cerbera 4.5 or the like to even MATCH my power to weight, let alone exceed it! Remember, it is not JUST power, it is power TO weight....

Just see how many cars you can find that have a comparable 350bhp per ton (or more) - you'll be able to count them on one hand....

NEXT!

LOL
