I replaced my gearbox on the driveway so I feel your pain.
My main issues were little things , bottom ball joint bolts snapping , driveshafts seized into hubs etc ,
It's satisfying when it's finished lol

Plenty of planing,loads of lube on the dp nuts before you started and engine out option!
You would have had it done in a day(easy day)
Engine out is No driveshaft out,no prop off etc..no crawling under the car!
Fair play tho as your giving it a go the way you wanted to and the same result at the end of the day

more like 2-3 hours work as its never taken me a full day to do one
the other thing I like about pulling the engine is you get a good view around the engine to check for leaks and stuff and you can get into the engine bay yourself and have a really good check in there aswell ,, not something you can do on your back lol
but as long as it gets done thats what matters

Well, finished up late last night including decat downpipe and new induction kit etc.
filled the box with oil this morning and took it for a spin, initially seemed fine although the bite is at the very bottom of the pedal. Soon as I applied any load even in 1st gear it slipped like mad.
so by now I'm a little frustrated, poor pedal adjustment I thought so turned round to head home asap, that's when it happened...
Turned left into a junction and boom, immediate vibration and shaking through the steering, I immediately stopped of course.
Took a look under the front of the car and there's my nearside driveshaft sitting on the floor, minus the cv joint and grease everywhere.
it would seem at some point I've popped the joint out of place and it's exploded when going on lock, I'm hoping the slipping clutch was just the power being lost through that wheel and bit another issue altogether.
5 days until Nurburgring and one very dead Scooby. Going to see if I can get my deposit back for the train and hotel, totally gutted.

Would have been easier and less fackarey I've you would have dropped it off your local subaru doe ialist and had your car back in half a day
Atleast your honest and tried but only if you had listened to the engine out method made by other members you wouldn't have had this problem ehhh ... never mind

Amen to that lol, hindsight is a bitch though.
Can anyone save the day with a spare driveshaft in the Essex area? It's a narrow track non DCCD 6 speed but seems to have the later male shafts fitted?

if you go into Scoobynet General and scroll down halfway there's a thread 'Driveshaft help please' 26th May, there's some info there which may apply and help get the exact part.
Breakers on here may have one, matty@ MB developments worth a try.

Had a chance to pull the shaft out and inspect further. Looks to me as I've pulled the shaft out the box ( it was very tight ) I've dislocated the spring clip inside the cup.
When I went of full lock it allowed enough room to pop out and as I've gone straight again the splines have ground against each other rather than slotting back in.
Shafts come off worse than the cup. I'm going to fully degrease and strip the cup down tomorrow and look for damage to the ***** and race. If all okay I'll try cleaning up the splines with a file or grind them down to clean metal and try and tempt the cup back on.

Well here's how it panned out.
Searched high and low for a driveshaft, seems the 04 STI narrow track has to be the rarest shaft to find, being double male ended and shorter than a hawk.
So after many phone calls everywhere it seemed a replacement shaft was out the question.
Fortunately my local parts supplier got a new cv overnight, I went for the most expensive brand at £130 to be sure on quality.
Ground the damaged splines down ever so slightly on the shaft and managed to tempt the new joint on with a rubber mallet.
Rebuilt with new grease and boot/clips and refitted this evening. Test drive and all seems well, clutch bite point is lovely and central with a light pedal. No slip and no knocks or clonks from the shaft on lock.
Overall I'm glad I did this myself in the end, besides the hiccup it's been a great learning curve for me and now I feel I know so much more about the Scooby and how it ticks which should help me in future problems and repairs.
Remap next Tuesday and I'm set!

When all is said and done the car completely hero'd it.
10 laps in plus 25 degrees temp all week, the Sunday was 38 degrees! But Scooby took it all in her stride, what a car!
