If you are considering this route, there are a couple of points to consider around honda diesels. my 2.2 accord has recently cracked its exhaust manifold, £500 - £600 to replace this using a good independant garage. The VSA unit has given up recently, that is around £300 for a reconditioned part, plus fitting costs - both are common failures on the accord. The 2.2 diesel is fussy on its oil staying with 0-30 is espensive, about £70 for the required amount of oil for a service, which needs done every 10K.

For fuel economy, I see around 600 miles on a full tank of fuel - 40mpg, not an interesting car in any way, I used to tell people my favourite part was the drivers door release, as it lets me out of it, comfortable, well specced in EX trim and reliable if maintained, but I dont think it will be cheap enough to do your job well.

Thanks again to all for the advice, it is appreciated. You have given me lots to think about! I'm now half toying with the idea of keeping the WRX and continuing to use it as my daily and possibly getting a hair dressers car for weekend and nice weather fun (S2000/MX5/TT). Call me crazy, but you only live once and you can't take it with you so you might as well enjoy yourself while you can.

Well in that case, sell the wrx and buy something more refined and luxury for daily lol.
Or do you prefer the little boost of wrx, a nice remap should make mpg decent on wrx for daily if you're gentle on throttle lol, (sorry if already mapped).

That's the trouble, I love the sound and looks of the Impreza, I think I would miss it too much! Yeah car already has a few mods and has been remapped to 290bhp

Oh? The link works for me when I click it? Does it work for anyone else?

That's the trouble, I have no idea what to replace it with!! I want something low mileage, reliable and comfortable. A few people are pointing me towards a Hyundai i30, but I'm not sure...

I test drove an 08 MX5 last weekend, didn't like it, don't see what all the fuss is about, I'm glad I got it out my system!

I'll check the link again, took me to some weird site.

I have a mate that has a 3yr old petrol i30, not sure what engine, but I thought it ran out of puff VERY quickly and had short gearing and just generally very dull.

The MX5 although I've not driven a newer one, should be better than the old 1.6 that I did drive, needs to be driven quickly to be appreciated as it's on or close to the limit that they shine, need to be a bit of a wheel smith to get the best out of them, like most RWD cars... they're unlike Impreza's where any average driver can go reasonably quickly, not sure I'd have one as an only car though.

Just checked the link again and it takes me to 'Viglink shopping' might be because I'm in Croatia.

The link has an extraneous ? at the end of it, should work fine if you take that off.

To the OP, what about a DS3 Racing or Mini Cooper?

Ditch, yeah I got that the MX needed to be revved to enjoyed, I turned the DSC off as well but it just wasn't there for me. I probably wasn't pushing as hard as I would if it was my car, I was on a test drive after all lol. But thinking about it after it just wasn't for me in the end.

I think what I want to do now is sell mine and put a bit of money towards something newer and a more luxurious cabin/comfortable ride etc. Then once I've moved, possibly get something older and fun for the weekend.

Mark, thanks, I have removed the '?' and the link still works for me, hopefully it works for others now? RE the DS3/cooper, I think I also need 5 doors for practical reasons I'd quite like a Fiesta ST, but they only come in 3 doors and I'm just not taken by the Focus, plus I think it's over budget.

Yeah I was thinking along those lines Busta, Had a mk4 Gti before the scoob and that was a good car, the first car I ever said I'd buy another one of. I've heard there are oil/engine issues with the mk5 cars and equivalent though? I thought about a Fabia VRS, but read they also had oil issues, the 1.4 turbo and supercharged ones.

The 1.4 turbo/charger have nemerous issues so I'd stay away from them. Not really heard of many oil issues with the mk5 tbh, but from mk5 is where they got better with the car in terms of a hot hatch as they went down hill from the mk1/2.
There is another thread on here about the mk5 gti so worth the read. The s3, Leon fr are same engine.
Or the cupra and edition 30 golf have the k04 turbo and I believe the ed30 have forged internals stock, not sure if Leon cupra has also.
I do know that the TFSI engines did suffer from oil consumption but I thought that were only a few audis, not sure it was across the range as they all gave different engine displacements.

Thanks for the offer Gazza, but I'm after something with less miles than my car

What are peoples thoughts on the Mazda 3? 2007-2012 range? The styling is growing on me....

My advice: As new as possible, as simple as possible, without intergalactic miles (max 120k)
Really Ali ? I'm taking your advice and looking at polos with less than 60k or less on the clock. Just thought cars nowadays would sniff at 100 k as nothing.lol

Down to the driver and where the car is used. Age is the main one...the longer its on this planet the longer it is exposed to wear and tear. Unless it's a garaged weekend toy.

100k of British salty roads and "longlife" servicing (I.e not enough oil changes) will happily kill off alot of cars before they are 10yrs old 100k.

3yr old car with 120k miles with a good driver can be fine as it'll see a lot of maintanence in that period and has only seen 3 winters worth of salt. A 13yr old car with 120k will be a very different story; and that is before taking into account how it's been driven.

If you go as new as possible and/or limit the mileage then you are generally getting better odds.

That said I'd rather have a high mile new (3yr max) car over a old low mileage. Unless it's been garaged and only used in the summer. The flip side is the newer cars are more complex and therefore more to go wrong.
