There is a bit of an "anti-new car" theme on Scoobynet these days that is usually voiced by owners of 10-15 year old modified Impreza's.

Even with the lack of warranty, more thirsty engines and greater need for servicing and consumer parts, there is no argument that running such a car will get you the "kick" you desire for far less than the depreciation/running costs of a new car.

...but here's the thing. Some (most?) of us - for a variety of reasons - don't want to run a 10-15 year old Subaru any more and are willing to make the sacrifices (financial) to run something newer.

...besides, most drivers of 10-15 year old Subaru's smoke 30 **** a day, drink both nights of the weekend and have a 3 takeaways a week. That's your PCP payment right there

Not quite, my point is more about this sudden fascination with 300bhp 4wd hatchbacks and people trying to make out like it's something new, when in reality Subaru have been doing it since the mid 90's.

The only aspect in which things have moved on is in terms of refinement, which lets face it is down to more sound deadening, a set of recaro's and more tactile materials used in the interior and a fancy stereo, all of which could be added to any car for a fraction of the cost.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the appeal of a new car having just pushed the Mrs into getting one, all be it for slightly different reasons, but in terms of moving the game forward it's certainly not happened in my eyes, even more so when you look at the styling of the OP's car, seems to me like they're all just copying a well proven formula.

 

No standard Scoob would go past my type r , it goes like stink feels quicker then my 350bhp Classic , not bad for a factory car

 

Not all of us, I just quit smoking, never been a fan of takeaways bar the odd fish and chips or kebab maybe 3 times a year, do have a bit of local wine and the odd whisky of an evening mind.

Beyond that I totally agree with you (now) but more for the maths of the PCP now that the numbers are a little more reasonable, just done it for the MRS and will be doing it for myself later this year, and again what car I get will depend on the numbers at the time, so it's not going to be anything fancy, probably the new Corsa SRI 1.0L Turbo or Fiesta Eco-tec S.

 

Subaru UK have lost there way, they think people want to pay £30k for a turbocharged car thats got the same engine design 10 years ago(could be longer as US market had the 2.5 in there Blobeye's) and pay £500 a year road tax, for a car that was supposed to be a cheaper alternative to a BMW/Merc/Audi, now they are trying to hard to be like these German brands and forget why everyone loved these cars in the first place.

I dont blame Subaru itself its Subaru UK that have ruined the market for the Impreza, Japan still use the 2.0 litre twin scroll, and the USA still sell a new shape WRX with 2 litre twin scroll and a 6 speed box, and us in the UK just get shafted with a **** car with a engine we dont want and running costs that rival a Range Rover Sport.

No wonder us loyal Subaru enthusiasts who have had 5+ Impreza's in our driving life, have had to find our fun elsewhere. Id be happy to have stuck to one brand(Subaru) as I loved Impreza's for years, but I guess Subaru UK are not bothered about us, and I see the STi brand in the UK being dropped!

That is indeed a bold claim, even my lowly £4k WRX Wagon PPP has similar 0-60 times actually .1 of a second quicker, with my AP's and handling mods you're going to struggle to make any other advantages you may have in the 0-100 stakes stick on the road, even more so with a reasonably experienced enthusiast driver at the helm.

Not sh!tting you or your car but in the real world on the road I find very few people that can make a large bhp or chassis advantage equal an *** whooping, Nurburgring may well be a different story if you have 1000 laps experience or greater.

 

It's no super car but I was saying compared to my classic (view my garage ) good spec it feels quicker and on paper should've quicker. But time will tell

 

How much turbo lag is there , say in comparison to a wrx

 

To be honest I'd expect it to be quicker, and that's coming from a 330bhp STI Type R owner, when you consider that the P1 made it into the super car statistics of it's day with considerably less power than my Type R, you'll probably find that your Type R would actually be considered a super car.

That said and I know it's hard to believe, but my lowly wagon is actually faster in many situations due to it's stability at speed, the Type R would try to kill me if I did some of the corners I do in the Wagon at the speed I do them, which is why I'm a bit of an outcast on here for stating my findings.

I'm old, Ive been doing this bike car speed thing for most of my life, most people don't want to hear that their car with X amount of BHP more than mine won't leave me for dust because they have been led to believe that BHP is king, well sorry to say it, but it's not, as attested to by cars like yours and 300bhp megans that can stay with 600bhp GTR's around the ring, but dare to suggest that a 260 bhp WRX can stay with or beat a 270 bhp STI and you get lambasted and become an internet pariah.

 

nice looking car, the world has moved on considerably since the newage inpreza,sadly most of the owners are stuck in a timewarp of crap interiors and made up mpg and performance claims.

There is hardly any, the way VTEC and turbo work together is awesome

There's a blue type r near me over the border in Bradford, even though for me it's a little extreme I do like them and this one looked very nice.

I'm hoping Subaru step up to the challenge and produce something worthy and not just another 300bhp car that is more effeciant because if they do their dead on arrival.

I saw Peogeots new 308R review and that certainly grabbed my attention just short of 500bhp hybrid petrol, if that comes out I'll be on the peogeot forums...

I'd love Subaru to bring out a 400bhp lump but you know what I actually don't think they have the ability internally to do it like MB or BMW Ie like team India are to red bull racing...

My goal is run the mini for 2 years pay a bit of the house off, give mini to wife, sell her people carrier and get my next toy....

No, unless its a JDM twin scroll model, compared with the 2.5 these will have far better low down response.

 

Think its just personal taste, it looks like ford was aimed for you, there of course looking at a mass market car that will appeal to the masses, don't think thats Honda's objective.

 

Not so sure on that. The FN2 was by far the best selling hot hatch of its class (most likely due to its price point) and this seems like a natural evolution for those owners. No one buys a Type R to be subtle.
