Journey of 1st time dog ownership - German Shepherd
GSD's are the best, I would say that caus my boy, who has just turned 3 is sat mear me.
I'd wanted a GSD since i was about 5 and had a few other dogs growing up, who were great, but it wasn't until recently I was settled enough to get my own dog
Mine comes from a show lineage and is a real stunning looking GSD
OP, great choice in a dog there, hope you get a lot of enjoyment out of him

Dammit he is just too cute!
We spent hours and hours taking ours into rough undergrowth to s**t; drove me slightly mad but it means our dog never goes anywhere but in deep grass/hedges, etc so we don't have to pick up turds constantly. Well worth the effort.
They piddle for a fair while, especially when excited but it's not a problem unless you have posh carpets.
How big are his parents?

Strangely enough, I've got a soft cuddly 'comfort' toy for his cage and he actually showed early signs of humping it and this was shortly after getting him home! He hasn't tried to chew the doorstop yet (or anything else that he isn't allowed for that matter) which is good.

I will certainly be accommodating my very own GSD one day. I'll see when that 'one day' comes, but it will deffo come; one day.
Your Theo is an absolute heart melter! Give him loads of huggles from me.
He looks a cracker mate
Lost my black GSD at the age of eight just before Christmas, I was heartbroken
Couldn't face getting another as it would never replace him so ended up getting a jet black Great Dane!
Love my big dogs
PS you will get loads of advice - mainly from people who have never owned a dog or nothing bigger than a Jack Russell
You bring the dog up as you see fit, it's your call - just make sure he lives his life around you - not the other way round!

Now that he seems a lot more settled in, I really am impressed with how quick he is learning to behave correctly. I think he'll be practically house trained by Monday.
When I feed him I put his bowl outside for him to eat and for the first time he was howling and scratching my front door for about 30 minutes but I resisted and did not let him in for that bad behaviour. He will now sit quietly waiting for me and the same goes for his kennel and temporary outdoor pen! Before he would bark and howl as I came through the locked gate ready to open up the pen but I would simply turn my back and wait for him to be quiet. As soon as he finally shut up after what seemed like half an hour, I reward him, make him sit and let him out. He now understands to be quiet and to calm down when I'm ready to let him out.
I've just been working on "sits" in the garden and he is practically sitting every time on command and obviously I'm rewarding for that behaviour. I have also been randomly walking around the garden and every now-and-again when he wonders off, I'll call him back and reward. He's getting really good at this random recall in the garden.
I think him and I are doing exceptionally well for just 3 days

Great looking GSD! He's gonna be a beauty!
Here's mine, he's an ex military working dog. Almost 10 and still no sign of slowing down!
Tim.
