Overpriced is a highly subjective term though. Price point is a factor, but so is sell through rates (units shifted). They're shifting loads.

Something else...... their commercial pricing model is pretty awesome, as what they make % wise, is as much on their cheapest product as they do their most expensive. In some respects that's utopia from a commercial perspective, as nothing is sold as a loss and each device is commercially viable, not supporting or being supported by something else.

Hat's off to them.

At the last count, at the end of June,*Apple*had $164.5bn of "cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities" on its balance sheet – up a heady $18bn on just nine months earlier. The vast majority of that money – $137.7bn – is held by Apple's foreign subsidiaries. From September 2013, its overseas cash mountain increased by $26bn.

The people that make these phones are having to work 70hr weeks just to make a minimum wage while having to stand for long periods of time with little breaks then sleeping 8 up in a small room that has a mixture of shifts so sleep is often disturbed and are being asked to take pregnancy tests before getting the jobs.

I can see why they do it, because governments etc allow them to get away with it but being impressed by a company that holds enough money to end many many thousands of child deaths each year in poor countries and doesn't even look after the staff who make them the money is wrong.

I know, I know, i'm be dramatic but company's this successful holding hundreds of billions in tax free locations and watching other parts of the world sink makes me a little sick.

I'm looking at this (in respect to that comment I made) from a pure commercial perspective.

The iPhone 6/Plus sells three times the cost of making one, thats around 70% markup. But even if you take in the cost of R&D, distribution and marketing, they're still raking in around 40% profit margin on each device sold. If they need to be congratulated, congratulate their clever marketing machine, I don't think any other company has been able to create such a desire in the consumer for a product and convice them to pay an extortionate amount for what is actually an average device.

indeed. as a money-making model, make em cheap, sell em high. Spot on.

If it was "overpriced", regardless of (impressive) marketing, it wouldn't sell.

But this model doesn't just apply to Apple (not that people want to hear this, as it's more fun being a hater )

Cars, food, most consumer electronics, mass-produced furniture. HOUSES.

"average" in your opinion...... Apple devices have never been classed as "average" that I'm aware of in general.

Nice one Apple!

They deserve it. My iMac I bought last year is the best piece of IT kit I have ever owned by quite some margin. It just lets me get on with my job all day every day.... Windows on the other hand
This.

Same for me, years of nothing but trouble with Windows/PC's, my Macbook Air has restored my faith in technology, over 3yrs and counting, not ONE problem in all that time, worth every penny as far as I'm concerned.

I don't have and Iphone as I couldn't justify the cost of something that I'd not really use to it's full capacity when I could get something that suited my needs for next to nothing, BUT having got this fancy Nokia (which operates on windows) it has opened my eyes to what smart phones are capable of, which was part of the reason I got one so as not to get passed by with the tech. So next time round I'll be boosting Apples profits further.

That's the only favour windows has done for me since it's release.

For me they're products are a little expensive, but the reliability factor on my laptop has been worth the extra expenditure, my last laptop was actually more expensive than my Macbook and a dammed site more troublesome.

Folks wouldn't bat an eyelid at paying a premium for an ultra reliable car so why the fuss when it comes to Apple, some just seem to hate the fact that they are successful, most business exploit their workforce and always will.

Exactly and well put.

I did wince at the price when I bought the iMac, but not any longer as it's paid for itself as far as I am concerned. It enables me to do my job better. That is all I ask.

I have been in IT for 28 years in one form or another, programming, management, procurement, graphic design, web etc. and I have seen all sorts of devices and software systems come and go. I will simply say that yes Apple products may be pricey or even too pricey, but anyone who says they are no more than average is clearly not qualified to judge. That's me being very polite btw

Record profits for apple just means that their is now a record amount of brainwashed mugs living in the planet that like to be controlled by apple.

I have an iPhone and to be honest I see no standout feature that puts it head and shoulders above any other of the flagship devices from other manufacturers. They're all much of a muchness; speed wise - nothing noticeable in the real world, better screen - no better and in some cases worse, build quality - nothing noticable since all will spend it's life in a plastic cover, apps - no difference with the apps I use, camera - again little difference. Overall little difference in the real world other that the price of the device compared to my brother's HTC One phone as an example.

The stand out feature is iOS which is going to be a bit tricky to compare. Not forgetting hardware wise Touch ID, which is life changing.

iOS has no advantage over Android in usability and vice versa. Touch ID, what do you use it for a part from unlocking your phone?

For me the brainwashed mugs are the ones that stick with Microsoft and windows, why on earth someone would continue to put up with that crap is beyond me ******* nightmare everytime you turn the bloody thing on it would have a wobble of some discription, spent half my time on PC's trying to work out what the **** was wrong this time, hateful things and I smashed the **** out of my last one, so satisfying.

And before you say it, it's not the operator because if it was I'd be having problems with my mac but hey guess what, no problems here.

LOL. Android is the Ubuntu of the mobile world, it's just trying to be iOS instead of Windows.

I use TouchID for access to programs like Dropbox and 1Password, which could be called 0Password, I use it to buy digital stuff and will soon use it to buy my shopping, I also unlock my devices with it.

At the end of the day ditch the argument is pointless. Use whatever works best for you and don't worry about everyone else is my motto these days.

If someone wants to slag off my choice of IT then crack on.... as long as I can use it to make my living who cares what anyone else thinks? I had exactly the same experience as you re. Apple products, but maybe others find Android and Windows better for them.

They're wrong of course...

..just kidding

Android is nothing like Ubuntu, Ubuntu is a niche OS whereas Android has over 80% of the mobile OS market. Also with the latest incarnation of iOS, I think you'll see quite a few features that have been copied from Android; it's iOS trying to be Android!

So your use of Touch ID doesn't provide anything more than a bit of convenience, nothing that you can't already do minus Touch ID and use it to pay for stuff only in places that accept Apple Pay, which in the UK is nowhere. It'll be interesting in seeing Apple Pay in the UK, currently under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act transactions made by a credit card, the card issuer is jointly liable with the seller. This could potentially put Apple liable instead of the card issuer since it is providing the transaction and the token to make the payment. Just speculating but I'm sure with Apple's clout they will sort something out.

So now you're talking about average within the flagship sector, rather than just average across each device? There is a huge differences in context here, and hence my initial comment to you.... as you set no context around using the term "average".

You're wasting your time with that one Shaun,. In fact reading the drivel he just wrote reminds me of one of the reasons I stopped reading this section of the forum and will now do so again. If I have trouble sleeping I will pop back.

Appologies, since iPhones are considered flagship devices, I would assume the comparison would be made with flagship devices from other manufacturers.

I'd say my iPhone 5 (32GB) is pretty average, but then I got it for £230 from a mate who upgraded. I'd get a iPhone 6 but not for £619. What's anoying is Apple chose to skip a 32gb version which pretty much forces you to spend more to get the 64gb version, because lets face it, who is going to buy the 16gb version with no expandable storage. Another great strategy for Apple to coin it in. I'm eyeing up the HTC One M9 to replace the 5 but the likely price of £500+ is still pushing it.

It's all about the 128, I had a 32gb 3GS. The 16gb is still sold for special use cases.

But this thread isn't about how good the tech is, thats why I posted it in NSR before the mods moved it.. If they make great things then I'm happy people are so content in their fake worlds (I'm not really happy for them ) i personal would rather buy some fishing gear for example.

I just don't get how people are impressed by a company of this size. ISIS are very good at terrorism but I don't respect them for it, or say good on them, hats off, although governments should show some respect for them.

It's not Apple meeting demand, it's Apple creating demand and people are lining their pockets.

Incidentally, I was given a iPhone 5 from my brother and gave it back, what the **** do I need all that for.

I'm on my 4th iPhone now and they all still work
2 are lying gathering dust and will do for cheap phones to take in holiday with
The iPhone 6plus 64 is amazing bit if kit and worth every penny to me as I haven't used my reading glasses since Xmas day it's just that but bigger the screen for me

Im using my iPhone 6 as much as my original iPad now

What I like about them is they are so easy to use and ultra reliable in 7 years not one problem with them compared to all my friends with Samsung ,blackberry etc which are always developing problems ,that worth a premium price alone
Quality and reliability

I never even consider the price of apple as I know it's a premium product which works well ,looks good and have the right image

My original iPad is going well after 4years and will be replaced with the new top of the range model as soon as it eventually dies

My work mates samsungs and budget makes are slow and unreliable and not user friendy
But cheap and it works out more expensive in the long term

Sweat shop in Asia
It's life I'm afraid they are creating work and a living wage for many thousands if people overseas

With our the factories apple have what would these people do
Not work and starve ?
There is no benefits system in Asia.
Same as all products from clothing to electronics it creates employment and a chance to survive and creats many jobs all over the world from sales ,admin and distribution

The apple watch
Well I'm looking forward to it
Don't really care about the Price as I know it will work and compliment my iPhone and iPad amd I'm sure the misses will want one as well

Correct, and there in lies the problem for 90% of people that aren't interested in "How it works" they like me just want it to perform the functions for which it was designed, hassle free.

All well and good you guys that are interested in computers, technology and the internet but what you seem incapable of understanding is that the vast majority of the world population do not share your interest, which is borne out by the popularity of Apple, a system that just does what it says on the tin.

FYI I have many interests and skills, computers and technology bore me to tears, it doesn't make me any less of a person, it means I'm just not interested in it.
