So a little more strip down done today. Namely the intercooler, believe it or not this is the first time I have removed one of these. And they are pretty easy aren't they.
So this is what I have left it like tonight

I've managed to but myself a small workbench as I have nowhere to put "stuff"

And some garage essentials

That done I've made a start on the rear diffuser buy keying and priming up the small section ready for it to go gloss black

Tomorrow the turbo heat shield is to come off for a clean and polish, and the decision on wether to go FMIC whilst everything is off..
What you lot think

This thread is a lot quieter than I thought it would have been guess I'll have to start ripping out turbos and welding roll cages in to make it more interesting.
So a little bit done today in the way of removing the intercooler and prepping it ready for a freshen up......but
I now don't know wether to bite the bullet and but a japspeed FMIC, because as it stands if I want an STI top mount then I will have to get a new scoop and under tray. And that adds up to the same price as an FMIC from japspeed.
Plus the turbo will be up rated at some point in the build
Before

Prepped

And the one part of the rear diffuser glossed

I'm unsure on turbo choice at the moment, but I will be looking for the magic 400hp number though. Which makes me think a FMIC is the most cost effective option.
400 is such a lovely number
I like the front mount look too
btw a 3 page thread ain't bad going for just under 2 weeks,I'm sure you got a lot of people watching on,,we do love a good project thread and your quality is already shinning through

So this event I battled (more wrestled) with my intake pipe. To say its a pain in the peanuts is an understatment
This is how it ended up coming out.

So that has left the bay looking like so.

A quick tidy up of some of the scabby cabling

But to make myself feel better I've had something delivered that I've looked for ages for

I was a nightmare that's for sure. But glad it's out...
Another couple of bits on order. A full set of black mishimoto intercooler hoses. Should allow it to breath easier than the standard horrible plastic unit on there at the mo...

Good effort going on here! I've got a bug also and I'm doing the same taking parts off cleaning them up and re coating etc. it's relatively simple if you take your time and gives you a sense of pride when you see it all coming together. Keep it up mate
cheers Marc
Nice thread going here. I am going to be taking delivery of my bug which has a b*ggered engine, so going to be stripping and fixing where I can. Complete newbie at anything mechanical, so reading this thread with lots of interest!

So this evening was a little wasteful as I only managed to strip off the hard piping on the rear of the intercooler..... And I found this

Is this normal? Or should I be worried?
As I was on a losing streak i thought I may aswell do some cleaning. Starting with the heatshield and header tank. The only reason I'm doing the dam heatshield is because I can't get it off

And the guide coat on the intercooler was rubbed down and the final coat of primer applied in readiness for some blackness...... Now I don't know weather to go gloss or Matt black????

I'm going to update the original post tonight to add some things that are fitted to the car already, and what I've got ready to go on at time of remap.

So from the lack of help on my last question of oil on the intercooler Y pipe, I guess I'll crack on.
The postman arrived this morning with a lovely go from Mr.Mishimoto

The intercooler gloss black finished off, allowing some drying time before the hoses get fitted

Some of the brackets tidied up and more crusty old bolts changed for stainless ones

And finally the throttle body hose trial fitted

I think I will carry on the mishimoto theme under the bonnet as I really like the quality of their products.. Plus it just ties everything together.
Next is refit all if the intercooler hoses and start to put things back. The turbo will stay as the standard TD04 until next year where I will go for an AFTD04-h.

Shaun aka Mr Moody, the oil will have been passed by your turbocharger in minute quantities in vapour form, it will collect in or around the intercooler due to the oil mist being cooled during it's journey through the intercooler.
You've got what I would consider an acceptable amount of oil collection there, that's perfectly normal and to be expected - if you had to literally pour oil of the pipework and intercooler then you'd have a problem.
Now man up and stop crying like a little girl.
