Yep, just look for the mode "Av" or "A" (apature priotrity). Most compacts with a thumb-wheel on the top have this mode.

Along with "Tv" or "S" - shutter priority, "P" - Program (adjustable shutter and apature with auto focus and auto ISO) and "M" (full manual).

When I purchased a compact camera for my mum, I made sure it had none of the above, as with her old camera (my old camera - which I gave her) she kept accidentaly knocking it out of auto into one of the other manual/semi-auto mode

But he also said he had a budget of £300 and there is no proper camera made that retails at £300. Whatever you buy at that price will be a compromise one way or the other!

Whatever you buy for less than about £3-5k (as a hobbyist photographer)will be a compromise one way or the other. Up that to about £20k if you are a studio photographer with a large format digital. What's you point exactly?

Because lets be honest here, on the DSLR front, anything less than a 1Dx or D4S with a good range of the high end lenses is going to be a compromise.
