yeh the nexus 7 with standard android OS only allows volume control via the side buttons.

but part of the ROM i installed when i rooted the tablet gives you a + and - on the bottom task bar. along with a play/pause button and a skip track button,

as for the FM radio. i have a freeview USB antenna and it links up with an app off the play store and you can use it to view freeview tv or fm radio.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...arto.androsdr2

just need to make sure the antenna has an RTL2832U chip ( £9 online )

also. below is the ROM i used if any one wants it ! its a Cyanogen mod

finally got a pic of the amp. :

need to tidy the wires up still.... (eventually) really impressed with the amp for the price, also has volume, treble and bass controls. although i've just set them and then use the on screen controls alsooooo got the USB hub wired up with an extension to the glove box, so can plug in any USB device and it will work on the tablet ( assuming theres an app/driver/kernel to run it ) best thing is i can put new music straight on a memory stick

also got my DAB USB antenna wired up and works brilliantly with an app off the playstore ( did cost a couple of quid ) means i can listen to any FM radio station, also means ( when i sort the kernel ) I can watch freeview TV.

got the antenna mounted in the left rear window in the boot, connected up with a USB extension run under the carpet

having the odd crash issue with the " timurs cyanogenmod " ROM i am using so looking into trying a few others. will let you know when i do

How many channels does the amp have? I assume you've wired all the speakers into it together.

at the moment the amp has 2 outputs. so front/rear left is on one side and f/r right is on the other. as its just a tester at the moment. eventually i will upgrade to better speakers and a nicer amp. but skint at the mo so being done on a budget.

having a lot of issues with charging today. tablet says im " usb host fast charging " but battery is still draining. not sure if its my usb charger, the wiring, the car , the ROM or my battery ( as its a gen 1 nexus 7 and a few years old )

looking at different ROM's as i type this

is the rom you linked to just a regular version of Cyanogen for nexus 7, or some custom cooked / tweaked car install version?

reason is, i bought the 2013 version of nexus 7 with LTE and probably should d/l a diff rom?

Just do a bit of research first, if I remember rightly CF can shield signals.

Check it out though as it's dim and distant memory from using CF in RC Helicopters and Gliders.

havent had a change to research signal blocking from CF yet. but will before i go and make all the parts haha.

as for messing up the fascia etc when removing the old unit. no, very easy to do. i did have to make a bit of a mess to get the tablet totally centered. but i didnt actually need to make the 2 slits visible in the pics, never mind though :P

and as for the sound quality. its terrible on standard speakers. but a mate has the same set up in his car, same amp but with aftermarket speakers and the quality is brilliant. wouldnt know the difference between that and a £300 amp imho.

got adapters for speakers now so going to be getting some over the next week or so and possibly an under seat amp.

Have to say I'd be surprised if a '200W' amazon special is actually as good as something from the likes of JL/Audison/Genesis.

At low volume levels maybe but as soon as you start to turn the volume up the difference will show. I'd also be surprised if the amazon special actually achieved the power level it claimed.

I'd imagine that for the purposes of what was always going to be a budget build it's perfect, sure you can always find better - but in the grand scheme of things unless you're a big audio fan something that just plays music through the speakers is ideal.

I've been looking at this in comparison with the head unit in my car, a Kenwood DNX7260bt, besides the tuner I can't think of much that it can do that a basic android tablet can't. There's not much...

( as for the tuner i have a USB DAB antenna and an app that cost £2.50 so i can listen to all fm/mw radio stations and currently working on writing some software to actually get DAB )

pretty much wanted to do the initial build as cheap as humanly possible. so far its cost me about £20 with the amp, wiring etc. so not bad ( as i already had the tablet )

Ordered the resin for the carbon fibre parts today. already got the cloth so going to get that done next week. also going to be ordering speakers this weekend. not going for to pricey £60/70 for fronts and backs. and then may look at an amp if they distort etc.

going to make a surround for the double din slot/heater controls. then work out from there, full carbon center console and work up from that
may rework the console a bit so its all one piece from the center glove box all the way up to main dash. reckon it'll look better as one smooch part rather than 3/4 plastic bits

My effort , just a quicky . All I needed was somewhere neat to hold the tab that allowed me to remove it easily.

paranoid android with Kangaroo kernel & power event manager.

allows fast charging, USB mounting etc

seems to be a lot more stable than the Timurs rom. He has released a new rom for the 2nd gen nexus 7 but wants a "donation" of £30 for it .pretty silly i think.

got a widget for volume control on the home page too

in kitkat they changed the coding of the nav bar so the volume on nav bar that i crave cannot be done on the 2013 edition if it runs kitkat. I see that the 2013 edition launched however with 4.3 and there's also 4.3.1 stock rom for my LTE model. I'll have look in to paranoid android rom, Kangaroo kernel & power event manager.

Well, had enough of my n7 build yesterday. Battery isnt holding charge again. Even with a brand new battery.

So went out and bought a pioneer appradio 2.

Wasnt cheap but can pretty much install ang app (once hacked) so will run much the same.
