Default Loud CLUNK after fitting Performance Friction Z Pads

Hi guys.,

I've got a Hawkeye STi on 22k , pads were still origional and needed changing so I went for a full brake overhaul. Purchased some cross drilled and vented discs from R1 concepts in the states, Performance Friction Z rated pads and Goodridge stainless braided brake lines. Booked the car in with Jon at Triton Motorsport in Bournemouth and they carried out the upgrade along with a full fluid change at the same time.

I got the car home and noticed that when you pull away and tap the brake pedal you get a very loud clunking noise coming from the front of the car. Some people have mentioned that it could be the pads seating in the calliper but do they really have that much room to move? Is it normal because my OE pads didn't make any noise at all.

Any advice appreciated, thanks chaps

Mine does it too. First time you touch brakes in reverse or moving off.
Most aftermarket pads do it.

Yes I noticed it does it when reversing and then tapping the brake pedal as well.

Nothing to worry about just the pads moving on the pins.
Bit annoying but you get used to it.

it IS because you've very probably fitted the retaining clip upside down!

it's normal only if it does it in reverse, as described above if it's doing it in forward then check clips are correct way up and see linked thread

Well I reverse into my parking space. So when I move off they clunk forward again. Don't do it every time I touch the brakes.

I have been using PF pads now for over ten years, and its normal in reverse gear to clunk as they are a tad smaller then the O.E pads, forward gears is another matter though and needs further investigation.SJ.

Spring clips all fine and correct way round.

If the pad moves backwards when you tap the brake in reverse they must move forward again.
Otherwise if they were still in the reverse position they wouldn't move when reversing.

Think some pads are worse than others. I've owned 3 Impreza's and they have all done it to some extent.

Mine's the same with PF-Zs, mostly when shuffling the car back and forth when parking. Once the car is on the move there are no clunks at all
