I would be inclined to repair the existing pipe by cutting off the bad part and replacing with copper. If you can get a flare kit and relevant parts for the job then it's worth a go. If you aren't confident in using the flare kit though, leave it to the garage to repair. Flares need to be right.

Yes, the factory pipes seem to be steel. Doing the double flare is going to be tricky. You need to cut the pipe square and neatly. I'm a fridge engineer and flare copper pipes all day, good prep is the key to success!

Have a look on YouTube for guides on doing it, I found some on there that were very good. It's not as difficult as it may appear.

As for advice on fittings, I can't help. There'll be stacks of them on eBay, look for brake pipe couplers 3/16"
