Default New key?

On my 53 plate Blob, I've got the separate alarm fob. The ignition key is starting to get tatty, can I just replace that with a standard key as I don't use the buttons on the key. I know that sounds a daft question, but just wondering if there's anything in this key that's still used for immobiliser etc. ????

If yes, who does a decent looking key?

There is a small transponder chip inside the key, you can get a replacement key with chip from Timpsons for around £50

Cheers, even though I've got a separate alarm fob that unlocks my doors?

Yeah, the transponder chip is for the immobiliser, not the alarm/door unlock. It's a small gizmo (a cm or so long) and sits in the plastic part of the key.

Have a look on ebay under "subaru key" you should see a few examples. You may even find a cheap used key in good nick. Swap the chip and blade for yours and you are good to go...

Cheers, will do.... I had been hankering after one of the JDM Titanium keys. I thought as my car is a Euro import (Cyprus/Malta) then it woulddn't have a factory immobiliser...

Hmm.....don't know for certain if it is the same for imports. I would imagine so, as the flashing key light thingy seems to be part of the cluster. Here's a video from youtube showing the chip.

Cheers, looks like my key DOES have a transponder then. I'm presuming it doesn't use the battery as there isn't a battery in the key in the video posted???
