Default impreza type r version 5/6 limited

Hi.
Im on the look out for a version 5 or 6 type r sti in blue. The v limited with roof vent.
Alot if not all seem to have engine trouble?
Whats the story? Is it big end bearings?
Can i check anything if viewing a car. If i do buy a car what percautions can be made to save the engine.
Thanks.
Also what else should i look out for?

Biggest issue was that the v5 cars were the first to run a 100 ron fuel map, and the MAF sensors are fragile which is the biggest issue(s) to killing the engine.
Fix those 2 and you should have a reliable car.

I have a v6, but I'm not selling!
Check it has been undersealed, otherwise it's open to rust. Not sure there are any particular issues with the engine, other than maybe people not putting correct fuel/map for UK roads.

I'd budget for service and map with mafless set-up for piece of mind and to get the most from the revvy engine

All the best, Paul

Hey David,

As said above, rust, MAFs and unmapped mods are the biggest things to watch out for.

I have a v6 Limited and wouldn't swap it for anything. Well, apart from maybe a 22b, but they're a bit too collectible and it'd probably end up as a bit of a garage queen.

Here's mine...

Thanks guys.
So a remap is a must full stop. And go mafless.
The ecu is not mappable i presume?
So an aftermarket ecu is the way forward like syvecs or gems , motec or loads more.
This an undersealing.
Any other do's or dont's?

I don't think you can remove the maf with a ecutek remap. Mine is currently in being remapped with a alkatek ecu.

Biggest killer of engines (& gear boxes) imo is hammering them when not up to proper temp.
Run gently off boost for last mile of journey then 20 second or so idle when parked up.
Non of this silly idling for 2 hours on a turbo timer business.
Regular blood transfusions & good food then you can thrash em all day long (kind of
Whippo you R looks gorjass!!!

Ecu you can map on a 5 and 6, esl are doing a board for them soon also.

Rear arches are a big job to do them properly if there is any sign of the start of rust.

Its the usual problems you look for on any impreza
