Subaru type r
I'm looking into buying my first subaru, I'd like to buy a fully forged subaru type r?
How much would I be looking to spend for a decent one?
&
What version is best to get? For power, reliability and handling
I'm very new to subaru's but after driving my friends I was so impressed that it's made me want one

Welcome. Before you go any further, has your friend told you just how expensive they can be to run?
I'd say around £8-£9k for a forged type r, and even then it may need some work. Just because it is forged, it does not make it bullet proof.
Plus the arches in classic imprezas have all started to go now so be mindful of bodged repairs.

How much would one be with a few minor mods then not a forged engine, I don't mind building the engine up myself

How much you got to spend? Depends if you want a mint one or not.

Welcome, if I were looking now, I'd be looking in the direction of fresh imports.
As above your looking at circa £6k plus for a decent one, then it's going to need a remap for UK fuel and some decent brakes as well as some handling mods and geo, beyond that it's pot luck.
Forged engine is no better than standard really as they'll cope with 350bhp from the factory and that's about as far as you want to take one on the standard box anyway, otherwise it's a roll of the dice/driving style as far as how long the gearbox will last above that level, and tbh you don't really need anymore than that in a Type R anyway, at that you'll be more than able to dust most things out there if you can drive.
I have a 555 V3 STI Type R, for me it's the original and best, but opinions vary some prefer V5/6 but there's not much in it, horses for courses, just buy the one in the best condition you can find.
Be prepared for 15/20mpg Hooning and combined you might get around 25mpg on a run @70mph but that's about as good as it gets, appart from that they're no more expensive to run than any other Subaru.

Il probably buy one already imported saves the hassle really,
What version should I look into getting?
My friends has a fully closed deck version 3 and says that's the best engine for power and reliability but bad on cooling?
This doesn't bother me however the version 6 looks a lot better but it's ht leads instead of coils and apparently the engines aren't the best on them?
Am I correct or could someone point me in the right direction

Main diferences between the engines are the heads as they have different cams, also possibly but don't quote me as it's a while since I did my research, I think the later ones may have different rods, but it's really no big deal because like I said before you don't really want to go much beyond 350bhp in any of them.
As above best place for precise information is Type R/RA forum.
The yen is up against the pound and prices in Japan have also risen so yes the cost of fresh Imports has gone up, but there are the odd ones kicking around that have been here a while and still with the dealers or been here a year or so, I believe Tidgy on here bought one recently from Max at Hurst cars for around the £6/6.5k mark, so they are out there.
Both sold but you get the Idea and both dealers have a good rep, you could try contacting them to see what they have coming over in the next few months.

Then there's these guys but as you can see their cars are usually a tad on the expensive side.

Yip as above, got mine recently, however it has had to have a few things done to put it right, prob comes to £1500-£2000 so in reality it prob £7500. I ended up being lucky in as much as the shell is solid with no rust.

All classics after 96 use a single coil pack and leads, the later cars just have the coil pack to one side instead of the middle.
