how good are impreza in the snow?

Hi guys this will be my first winter with the scoob, I have a 2007 wrx impreza how good/bad will it be

Regards scottie

DAMCHIEF 01 November 2011 11:29 PM

Good, but great with winter tyres :thumb:

richie001 01 November 2011 11:29 PM

Their alright,It's the brakes I don't like.

bonesetter 01 November 2011 11:36 PM

Much worse than you might think.

Standard road tyres pretty bad really. Braking will be the same as everyone else - no advantage.

You'll get most benefit in uphill grip where others will struggle

Winter tyres will even the odds

jura11 01 November 2011 11:46 PM

They're OK with winter tyres, but ABS is just bad joke in winter on Subaru

Brakes are horrible in the snow. So don't think you can go faster than everyone else due to your AWD. The only advantage (on normal tyres at least) is the ease of getting up hills, moving away cleanly and being able to accelerate. But yeah, brakes = bad :D

sedge69 01 November 2011 11:53 PM

well i think they are very good in the snow........... last year i still had my road tyres on and we had quite a bit of snow in yorkshire and i had no problems at all as long as you dont stamp on the brakes youll be fine.

i suppose it all depends on what kind of driver you are if you think there good or not

Scooby Parts 01 November 2011 11:56 PM

You wont get stuck. Put it that way.

I couldnt get out an icey runway which had a 1/50 slope in my TDCi Mondeo that didnt have traction control.

Thats half the reason I got rid of it before the winter came.

ABS = Fail!!!!!

is it true that the early imprezas didnt stop in the snow and owners were pulling out there abs relays :cuckoo:
i heard the 98 on scoobs with abs were fine in the snow???? well my 98 was last year :D

shanew 02 November 2011 12:07 AM

mine was great, got me everywhere. never once got stuck. got to laugh at lots of people in pretend 4x4's like qashquis and touregs ect getting very stuck on sliding on hills, i was sat with the big boys in there rangerovers trundeling along. standard re050 tyres too

fastboyslim 02 November 2011 12:07 AM

They are awesome in the snow. Good on ice too. But be warned nothing likes to stop on ice. In France last year with the huge dump the country had going over a mountain pass we passes 6 cars putting on snow chains, the scooby had no signs of traction loss at all. Well impressed with her. My classic wagon was even better in the snow than my newage.

NOSSY_89 02 November 2011 01:28 AM

Newly passed and was my first car when the snow hit. I was overtaking and driving really fast lol. It was roughly then that I decided I found my type of car lmaooo.

bioforger 02 November 2011 01:47 AM

driving really fast n overtakin on snow, brilliant, well done lad

Pramas 02 November 2011 01:48 AM

scoobs move pretty ok due to awd, but it stops the same as every other car out there since they all use 4 brakes

stedee 02 November 2011 03:45 AM

Wide tyres can catch you out and watch out for those kerbs when you drift sidewards.

Matt_F 02 November 2011 04:30 AM

will be my 1st winter with a scoob as well

tbh i know it will be better than my lcr as that was fwd and wasnt that confident of driving it in the snow to quick, but it ws ok aslong as i took it steady

will do exactlye the same in the scoob though, never go mad in the snow and no hills to go up etc so should be ok

i do 4 on 4 off shifts so if it snows bad on my 4 off i dont even bother using my car,lol

gpssti4 02 November 2011 06:04 AM

Unless you have winter tyres they are only 'better' than a two wheel drive car when pulling away. Every other time they are the same as other cars, don't be fooled with the 4x4 stuff!!!!

L&G.scooby 02 November 2011 08:16 AM

I had a Audi quottro last year, I only hope my scooby is as good as that was, it never missed a beat and didn't get stuck anywhere.

L.J.F 02 November 2011 08:33 AM

As already posted these cars can lead you into a false sense of total control due to good traction and the fact that they are suppose to be bulletproof Rally cars. I tend to pull out the ABS fuse and just drive steadily like you would with any other car.

They do go around empty carparks very though;)

JamieJerkovic 02 November 2011 08:45 AM

My subaru was great in the snow last year, never got stuck anywhere. Only thing that worried me was the car behind me!

And what he said ^

They do go around empty carparks very though ;)

morandpeter 02 November 2011 08:55 AM

my advice is to take corners sideways.......... : )

CREWJ 02 November 2011 08:56 AM

Just like everyone else says.

Great for traction and going sideways (Easily controllable!) but you stop just as badly as everyone else.

Really you don't realise just how bad the brakes are in the snow until you try it >.>

Fleetster 02 November 2011 08:58 AM

Well for the last few years ive had BMW's and i have quite a steep hill to get up to get out of my street..... a scoobys gotta be better for that at least :)

TonyBurns 02 November 2011 10:24 AM

As said by those who know ;) not the best in the snow but better than most front/rear wheel drive cars.
You really need winter/snow tyres to get the greatest benefit from a scoob in bad conditions, though in deep snow it may seem your doing well on summer tyres, hit any packed stuff and your sliding as much as anyone else is!

Tony:)

Tell me Im not reading this! Im guessing here that you are 22 years of age, consider acting your age, and think about other road user next time you fancy putting everyone around you at risk. Overtaking in snow as a junior driver is not a laughing matter.

I have 14 years driving experience and I find that each winter is challanging as the conditions can vary so much. The same road with the same amout of snow fall each year will likely differ in driving conditions due to freeze temp, wind chill and changes in your car.

I found that the extra lag in boost with the GT30 (400rpm over the VF35) actually helped in the snow as I wasnt boosting as early which meant I could maintain momentum in the same gear for longer without surge thus wheel spin.

Rob

jezza995 02 November 2011 11:10 AM

Rather embarrassingly got my scoob stuck on RAF Scampton last year, all four wheels spinning ! It is lowered though and got beached on the solid snow in the middle of the road, beware all lowered scoobs !! Other than that it was great but can lull you into a false sense of security !

Gutted1974 02 November 2011 11:38 AM

i got my new scoob (03) for the snow and ofcourse the fun in the dry warm summer. Live at the top of a hill from all directions so last year our 2 FWD cars could leave the house but not get back!!

This year I am buying some michelin snow chains for the GFs car and thought I should just cut to the chase and get a scoob..

JUST HOPE IT SNOWS!!

To all those commenting ref the abs.. ofcourse its a problem in the snow, worse than non abs ofcourse, but remember to use engine braking and also if you pump the brake pedal as teh abs is coming in then you can slightly improve on the standard abs performance.

Driving hard on snowy roads is a fools game and one that will guarentee needing a new scoob in the spring imho...

jef 02 November 2011 12:36 PM

mine was great in snow, no one could get out my street for literally 2 weeks, apartf from me.

but as said, only good for traction when pulling away, and uphill, the rest is same as any other car, hit brakes hard, you will start to slide - until you hit something or naturally stop if your lucky lol

stef_2010 02 November 2011 12:36 PM

Not as good as you'd think

I made the mistake last year of thinking a Subaru would concor all in the snow, I was wrong. My suspension and tyre setup weren't the best for the conditions though

My MK4 fiesta encore on the other hand was great, never got stuck once
