REAR STRUT KNOCKING...BEST TYPE OF GREASE?
 

Any multipurpose grease will do, as it's a sealed unit.
I re-packed mine, but unfortunatly the knocking means the damage is done to the top bush so a waste of time.

Do what I did,
Remove
Throw in bin
get some aftermarket struts, NOT KYB's

had kyb adjustables on my classic for 5 years now, awesome bit of kit. why so anti them?

As a preventative measure I have repacked my rear struts and fitted grease nipples. Its quite an easy job, in fact the hardest part was removing the bottom nut from the strut, had to make some mods. I used Lucas Red n tacky grease HERE that I got from ebay. But to be honest any good grease will do the job. I would recommend fitting grease nipples as you can then fill the chamber between the bushings.

How long did it take you to do ?
Are they silent again?
Mine are silent again after a good spray of white lithium grease

Took a good 2 hours a side but I did have trouble with the bottom nuts and I cleaned up the struts and painted them etc. It turns out that they were not the source of the noise I had ( car needed new outrigger bushes ) but at least I now know that they are not going to start knocking as they are packed full of grease.

KYB are the oem supplier, iirc

As above, KYB make the dreadful std shocks.

ahh that makes sence, yeah the standard shocks are kyb, but there pretty crap lol

the uprated ones are much much better.

Did you replace with OE or uprated items. If so what did you use, from where and how much. Thanks Bob

The outrigger bushes ??

I used PowerFlex items, about £20 each from ebay, PFR69-124 here http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/POWERFLEX-BUSH...item45f32d041d and PFR69-118 from the same seller.

Quite a big job to fit, cost me £260

Can you post some pics of exactly where you put the grease nipples, interested in this.

fitting grease nipples is not the best idea, over time the lower part of the shock cavity could become overfilled with grease and with nowhere for the grease to go this will become an issue preventing the shock compressing.

Its almost impossible to overfill with grease as it is only injected between the upper and lower bushes. When this chamber is full no more grease can be injected ( not using a handheld grease gun at least ). Worst case is that grease goes past the lower bushing over time, however the clearance between the damper and the tube it runs in is plenty big enough for any stray grease to simply pass over the damper as it moves down. As the damper then moves back up the lower bush will simply wipe the grease back into the lower chamber.

So what's the cause of the noise i have it on my rear passenger strut is it one of the bushes on the top mount is that all that needs replaced.Mine goes up and down ok and stays in position just want to get rid of noise can i do that by replacing a bush in the mount.:thumb:

Having spoken to a Subaru specialist, the rear struts knocking happening when you start moving from stationary doesn't really affects the car's handling but it can be annoying I suppose.
