Car won't start. Fuel pump?
 

Last night car started as normal, but while warming up it got really smokey, which was blatantly fuel as it stank! This morning it wouldn't start. Checked for pump priming, but heard nothing. Disconnected IN hose on filter and tried again... Nothing. Just under half a tank of fuel in it, so I guess the fuel pump started freaking out lastnight and died this morning.

My car is a MY97 WRX (EJ20), but what pump should I get - a walbro uprated one?

If your currently running mods on the car, or plan to mod it in the future then may as well go for a walbro 255 lph. £80.00 new or £40.00 secondhand off eBay, pistonheads, etc.
If your planning on leaving car standard, then there are plenty of breakers that sell 2nd hand pumps from £20.00 upwards, but you could be faced with the same problem in 6 months or less,might as well go for the walbro for reliability imho. :thumb:

i have a 97 uk and just got a walbro 255lph pump kit for £72 inc postage from jp4mance.
quick delivery and made car lot nicer to drive.(running full de-cat hks system,headers and up-pipe and induction kit).

I got a few mods under the bonnet, and no doubt already a walbro pump (yet to look at the pump) so yea Walbro it is.... Just wasn't sure which one to get.

Dont forget to check the green fuses in engine bay too as they can blow and stop fuel etc :)

I'll check the fuses too mate thanks. Just weird how one minute it's fine and the next it's not... Have had no prior warning other than it running rich the night before... But it was absolutely freezing that night!

when the ignition is turned on, is the single 'click' sound a good indication that the fuel pump relay is in good working order? I have looked into the fuse box and the two green fuses/relays look sound to me with no breakages or discolouration.

Take the carpet out of the boot. You'll see the dome in the top right corner. Get someone to listen for the pump priming when you start up.

When you said it stank of fuel and you had loads of smoke, are you sure it's not overfuelling and you have a problem with the injectors/fuel system?

Do you get a sucking noise when you remove the fuel cap?

I drilled a hole through mine and it cured my fuel pump problem.

There's no sucking noise from the fuel cap, no. The car was sweet before that night too. No difference in the drive home either on that night. Just simply didn't want to fuel up the following morning. I'll just check and replace the pump and see whether it fixes the issue.

Walbro pump finally arrived today so fingers crossed....

Yup, it was the fuel pump that was faulty. All fixed now :)
