Yeah but they don't taste quite the same (Beef) - it seems to be a darker flavour than what I remember...plus they should be in a red bag :D

Alas 24 June 2006 02:19 PM

I used to love the old Salt n Shake. They're not the same now.

On another note when I was a kid at primary school (60's) I got a shilling a week pocket money and as crisps were 3d a bag I could get 4 bags. Then they went up to 4d and boy was I pissed as I could only buy three.:D

There was a petrol station down the road from my mate that would get boxes of these in very infrequently.

They also did gammon and pickle flavour as well iirc.

I have a distant memory of small lattice like crisps that were very crunchy, but the haze is too think to remember!!

That's the shizzle! The mustard one's used to get up your nose they were so strong

Freak 24 June 2006 03:47 PM

has anyone mentioned scampi flavoured nik naks

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew yuk :nono:

they used to sell them in the tuck shop at school, and there were always a few people who used to eat them in class. could smell them from the other side of the room

yuk!

What a great thread !

Piglets were dead cool and really nice. Glad Smith Sqaure crsips are still around and Ringos are definitely right up there.

My all time fave were those Good And Crunchy crsips bloody lovely !

What ever happened to KP crisps by the way as they were miles better than the walkers rubbish we have to put up with now. Oh yeah tomato was the daddy of crsip flavours even though it tasted nothing like a tomato !

Scampi crisps at our school were just another weapon, launch and assault and rub them into the victims hair !

JDubya 25 May 2010 07:54 PM

Cheese Hula Hoops etc etc etc.

First of all, thankyou to the person who validated my story to a colleague about the fish and chips biscuit-crisps.

Secondly, I do not remember Smith's chees crisps, but I DO remember the Cheese only Hula Hoops.

I am glad that they brought Beef Monster Munch back, but disappointed that they came back as the "Pickled onion" shape Monster Munch. The beef ones used to look different... although sadly I cannot draw it here... shame.

I used to like Worcester Sauce wheat crunchies, although I believe that they still do these.

A little later, in the 90s they had lamb and mint flavour crisps... might have been by Brannigans??

As for the ringos, I know someone asked this 4 or 5 years ago but they were made by Golden Wonder... they used to be "flat" rings... then they brought them back a year or 2 after discontinuing them. Sadly when they came back they were more... hmm... they were a different consistency, like corn/puffy crisps than the old original ringos.

While I do like some of the crisps that are out now, the memories of the old ones are really awesome.

By the way regarding the blue salt that you put on yourself, not only do these still exist in certain supermarkets, as Walkers salt and shake, they do also have a supermarkets own brand version in Sainsbury's. Cannot remember the name, but just ask in your nearest branch.

Nothing can beat the smell though of the Smith's factory going along the A27 back in my childhood days ;-)

Wow I would LOVE some cheese (just cheese) hula hoops right now ;-)

Round our way you could also buy Fangs, Claws, Bats and Bones

Can you really still get the above horror series? Who makes them now because I think they used to be made by Smiths? Whereabout's is "round your way" roughly like?

I would love to try all those again!!!! Brings back playground memories!! :D

So loved the Claws and Bones!

Presume some of you chaps have just stopped buying crisps - or is it just that I'm a crisp fanatic, a lot of the crisps mentioned are still available - sausage & tomato (Golde Wnder), salt n shake, space raiders.

Golden Wonder used to make a Tomato flavoured crisp that were very stongly flavoured - they disappeared again late 70's when all the fuss about 'e' numbers started.

I used to LOVE them. Blow your damn head off crisps they were.

Lisawrx 25 May 2010 09:16 PM

I used to love Bovril crisps, not sure of the decade they came from, although it couldn't have been the 70s as I wasn't around then. ;)

Think they were made by Smiths.

I wish Walkers hadn't taken over the crisp world though, as they're not the same (the crisps they make that weren't originally theirs). Plus as a rule even their own stuff is crap.

skoobidude 25 May 2010 09:21 PM

Does anyone remember Rock n' Rollers?

I was going to say Football crazy but a couple of others picked those up :)

The ones I really liked were Monster Munch.

skoobidude 25 May 2010 09:24 PM

Some that have stood the test of time are those ones that you used to only get in big bags in garages, but you can now get anywhere:

salt & vinegar chipsticks, onion rings, bacon fries, salt & vinegar twirls etc.

They are jam-packed with e-numbers, but delicious. Many a long journey has been spent driving with a big packet of chipsticks balanced precariously between my legs, trying not to get grease all over the steering wheel. Who needs to waste precious time and money going to a Drive-In McDonalds when you can enjoy an equally nutritious meal for much less cash whilst driving your own car?

One other point about good crisps/snacks in general: I have never got to the point where I can't eat any more! :D

Nice to see those Outer Spacers: we used to get those after swimming practice for about 5 or 6 pence. Also those tomato flavour dragon-promoted Snaps. We couldn't afford proper crisps :(

I can remember having Bones at infant school, must have been about 76 !

I knew there was another variety and had been trying to think of what it is, Fangs, thats it, I knew they never made Smith's "Witches Tits".
