Question Mercedes 190E - need info and fotos - nurburgring

hi

at a recent trip to the nurburgring i saw a "race" one of these displayed in the tourist info building (wish i'd taken some fotos of it!)

have a bit of a hankering to buy one now and use for track days and maybe hillclimbs.

i presume you can buy a manual one? looked on ebay, loads for say 500 quid but no doubt a total dog? i'd strip it anyhow so would just want something that is mechanically good. i'm sure the 2L ones etc are a bit lifeless and would need a 2.6?

anyone own one? any info?

cheers
steven

probably the cosworth version. i think the DTM racers were called EVO versions but don't qoute me on that.

the cosworth 190's had a subtle body kit (flared arches, skirts, small boot spoiler) but came with either a 2.3 or 2.5 litre engine. the earlier ones were 2.3.

2.5 put out about 205bhp IIRC don't know torque.

most were auto but the manual had a funky dog leg gearbox, first is where second is on a normal box, 2nd in 3rd's place and so on. worked quite well

all this is from memory of owning one about 9 years ago so a bit of googling should help.

don't think you'll find too many genuine examples around now and if you do i wouldn't expect them to be cheap!

good car though, so good luck

hi folks

well, an afternoon of surfing and i'm better informed!

the 2.3 16V seems to be the one to go for. dont want to spend money on a mint one as i'll be stripping it and probably spray it white.

something like this might be a good candidate...

I bought a 2.3-16, new, in 1988. Sold it in 1992 (112,000 miles, never missed a beat) and bought a 2.5-16, sold that after 40,000 miles as I had nothing but trouble with it.

For what it's worth the 2.3-16 was a quicker and sweeter car.

Midget, the ones from the top of my head are
a: injector seals going faulty causing poor running and hard starting
b:rattly timing chains that never seem to last as long as other Mercs
c:rear self levelling shockers going bad and costing a fortune to replace.

Two brothers that worked for Merc in years gone past have a 2.5-16 Evo and a "P" reg Evo2 (it was stored unregistered for a few years), and they are just beautiful.
One of the boys at the Merc garage in Ayr has one for sale I think (a 2.3-16), but it may need some work. I could ask about it for you if you want.

Working as a DJ for First Leisure '88 to '95, based in Bristol, working Manchester, Liverpool, Derby, Leeds, Birmingham..... and the odd trip to Scotland for launches etc etc. Must have been nuts, as I really don't remember most of the miles if you know what I mean.... I was lucky to get away with it and wouldn't do it again... ever

2.3 was never any trouble. I just had it serviced regularly, it never broke down, never refused to start, nothing ever broke. Fast as ****, and showed many a saph cos a clean pair of heals. Struggled with 'chipped' cars in a straight line though (hadn't heard of 'mapping' in 1989) although the merc chassis was always far superior and much more freindly.

The 2.5 was a different thing altogether- a total sack of ****e, friday afternoon car, broke regularly, and it got a fair amount of abuse around castle combe

I think, tbh, I was unlucky with the 2.5. The Mercedes Cosworths were all beautifully balanced cars, and are great for track (as long as you ascertain if you can still get the bits if they break- which is what has put me off)

ahh, that's what it was then! it was a right coont to start towards the last few months of my ownership and just stalled for no reason when it was cold.

bloody thing cost me a fortune, good fun though

one thing i was impressed with was when it was put on the rollers it was only about 5 bhp down on the book output, and that was with 140k under it's belt!
even if it was a generous roller that ain't too bad

just remebered where it came from, rude mercs. wonder if they're still going? they had an evo there when i was buying that was about double my budget

those evo's you're talking of must be worth a pretty penny now mate?
