Default Audi TT engine noise

Hi all,

The other halfs Audi TT has developed a engine noise tonight.

Ive uploaded a video to you tube https://youtu.be/y6gmEWOGFwU

Any ideas what it could be? Couple of people have mentioned the cam chain tensioner. Just wondered if anybody else had any ideas

Thanks

Sounds pretty unhealthy whatever it is.
Sounds like something spinning and rubbing like the fan blades or something.?

I had the valve cover off and couldn't see anything that looked broke.

Few people have mentioned the cam chain tensioner but I'm looking for any more opinions and things to check before I bite bullet and send it in to the garage

Sounds like the plastic guide on the chain tensioner is breaking up and catching the chain. I'm guessing its the little chain on the gearbox side that drives the inlet cam, as the tensioner guide on this can break, but still keep enough tension to allow the engine to run.

Do not run the engine or drive the car. Unless you want it to slip a few teeth and bend the valves.

Thanks for your reply ali, I won't be running it. I'll take the valve cover off and see if I can see anything wrong with the tensioner.

Think I'll just have to take it to the garage if not.

Thanks again

Hi Neeko. Sorry to hear you're having problems. Unfortunately, this dpb fella wasn't being sincere and helpful. I actually know very little about car mechanics. This oddball stalks me on here, and every time I post anything, he makes the same comment: that I owned a TTRS for years (it was actually about seven months) and then realised it was basically a Golf, so sold it. Yes, he really is this sad!

Ultimately, I think it boils down to jealousy. He owns a Citroen Xsara, by the way, and claims to regularly race and beat Bentleys and other supercars. He loves his Xsara, bless him - claims it's the best car ever made! He is also illiterate and spells Uncle as Unce (see above). Maybe he is getting confused with his own childhood nickname, albeit missing the D from the start.

Sorry I couldn't be of any help.
